Share upgrade and keep the same plan(unlimited data)

I chatted with a verizon rep and posed this to her:

I was chatting with someone a few weeks ago and he said something about using my daughter's upgrade for my phone? I would then be able to keep my same plan :smileyhappy: Her reply was:

If you use your daughter's upgrade you can get a new phone and keep your unlimited data. Another option to keep unlimited is to pay full retail for the
phone.

We visited a Verizon store and was told this was untrue. Can anyone verify this for me?

The store reps were wrong. You can use your daughter's upgrade to get a phone at the subsidized price and renew the contract on her line. Then you can activate the phone on your line without any plan changes. You will need to make sure they aren't trying to switch you to the Share Everything plan when getting the phone on your daughter's line.

Hmm Ann not to take this in the wrong way but can you Tag along with me to my Local store and Tell the Reps or Manager what your telling doozypoots because i thought when you had Unlimited plans like i do and my Line is coming up for Renew in February as i was told to get a new phone and keep my Unlimited i would have to Pay full Price for it). If i want it at a subsidized price i would have to go with a different plan and drop my Unlimited) I'm just a little fuzzy on this that's why i'm asking :smileyhappy: b

That's correct and has been discussed on this forum in tons of threads. If you have unlimited data and want to keep it (at least for now), your choices are:

pay full retail price for a new phone at Verizon
buy a phone from somewhere like swappa or ebay (somewhere that doesn't require a new two-year Verizon contract)
get a subsidized phone from Verizon, sign a new two-year contract, and switch to a tiered data plan (i.e., 2 GB for $30); this applies if you're currently on a Nationwide plan ... older plans may force a switch to the Share Everything plan
if available, upgrade another line on the account and move that phone to the unlimited line (of course, if that line also has unlimited data, it will be lost)
add a line to the account for a new subsidized phone, move the new phone to the unlimited line, and put a basic phone on the new line and drop the data plan (of course, that would involve paying a monthly fee for the additional line,and the ETF would be based on the smartphone purchased, not the basic phone on the line)

So now I'm totally confused and I apologzie if this was covered somwhere else. I am not sure what a "subsidized" phone is. Let me try and explain it in my own words.1 of 3 things:

a. Buy a phone through Verizon (hopefully for free after rebates etc..) and pay $30 acctivation fee for a new 2 year contract and keep my unlimited data plan.

b. pay full price for a phone and keep the unlimited plan.

c. buy a new/used/refurbished phone from an outside source (ebay etc...) and keep the unlimited plan

If a is untrue why did the rep in the online chat tell me:

tikibar1, sorry for the confusion. No need to be fussy. I can address your concerns. When upgrading to a new device with promotional pricing, you will be moved to a current data plan since you are signing a new contractual agreement. However, if you purchase a new phone at full retail pricing, it will not extend your contract and you can keep your Unlimited Data plan.

We too have a couple of lines with grandfathered unlimited data. I spoke to Autumn, a verizon customer service representative today and was told in no uncertain terms if we did ANYTHING with one of those lines (new phone, change our plan in any way, etc.) that those lines will automatically be required to purchase different data plans. She said "We don't even have the option of selecting unlimited data for you." Like many others have posted, we are long time Verizon customers, paying for 5 lines, all with some kind of data package. I too feel it is a money grab. I'm also feeling our current phones are going to need to last a long time.

You can get a new phone, but you have to purchase it from a third party or at the full retail price of the device. You can't purchase at the subsidized two year contract price.

Thanks for the reply. I understand that has worked in the past but this customer service rep. led me to believe that wasn't an option anymore. I'm hoping someone will post that has recently done that (like in the past month) and had that work = )

Misinformation isn't my cup of tea either. So, let me set the record straight. Now, there are some actions that will have you move into tiered data plans. The biggest one is upgrading at discounted pricing. You can however upgrade at full retail price or utilize our device payment program http://vz.to/ZILXBT as ways to retain unlimited. But, how many GB's do your lines average? If under 2 GB, like 95% of our users, I'd recommend getting the better deal and upgrading at discounted pricing.

Ok, you guys are contradicting yourselves. If a person upgrades any of the lines are they required to move to a shared data plan? Say I have five lines, two are unlimited, one 2gig and two non-data plans. I was led to believe that if I upgraded any of the phones at a subsidized price then I would be required to change to a shared data plan for all the phones (running me $30+ more a month for less data than I get now). Above you state that the person could upgrade his Daughters phone (assuming its on a family share plan) and then activate the phone on their line and have no changes other than a new contract for that line.

Now you completely ignore that as an option. For those of us looking to upgrade and have the old shared minutes plan with multiple lines, what will make us change to the new share everything plan? Will getting any new subsidized phone on any line do it? Or is it just for the primary line?

Please clarify.

NO, you are not, although there are some third party and authorized reseller outfits that will only give you that option. GO to a CORPORATE store. I have upgraded the primary line, 2 other lines, and done an AOL on my account within the last 6 months, the most recent upgrade in July, and we still are on the 1400 Talk & Text Family plan. The primary line did lose unlimited and move to a 2GB tiered plan, but we did NOT go to Share Everything. They tried, oh did they try, but I had done the math and it would have cost more, so I said NO.
For those of us looking to upgrade and have the old shared minutes plan with multiple lines, what will make us change to the new share everything plan? Nothing will MAKE you change to Share Everything. You may want to do the math yourself and see if it will save you money. We are at a "break even" point now, adding one more smartphone will make Share Everything a better plan for us. Will getting any new subsidized phone on any line do it? Or is it just for the primary line? Neither one - but some retailers will tell you otherwise. Use the store locator to be sure you are dealing with a Verizon Corporate Store.
Please clarify.

I would be happy to clear up any confusion. With so many options available I know that there are a lot of questions involved. To clarify, if you are currently on a nationwide plan and have a line with unlimited data you have 3 options when getting a new phone. First you can upgrade and move your entire account to the share everything plan (This is an option but not a mandatory choice). Next you upgrade and move your lines data plan to a tiered data plan option starting at 2GB for $30 (5 for $50 and 10 for $80). Lastly, you can purchase the phone at full retail and retain your unlimited data. These are the overall options for getting a phone and having unlimited. The first two options involve getting a subsidized device and signing a contract and the last is outright purchase with no contract.

As for your example it can feasibly be done. If a different line on your account that doesn't have unlimited data upgrades they can give the phone to the line with unlimited and that lines data plan not be affected. Since that lines contract has not updated no change is neccessary on the unlimited line. I hope this clears up any confusion. Let us know if we can be of anymore assistance.

Does anyone but me not realize how utterly dumb this is?

A. Verizon has no documentation on the website as to how transferring an upgrade works....so we get mixed reports from both verizon reps and customers.

B. You're telling me that Verizon spent who knows how much money developing this upgrade transfer option which does absolutely nothing......I say it does nothing because if the contract renewal sticks to the line the upgrade is transferred from (line 1) then technically is that not the same exact process as upgrading on line 1....then activating or swapping the device to line 2 which is already an option available to us?

Not to mention that after transferring the upgrade online, and going through the upgrade process of adding a device and features to the cart, nowhere does it mention that any changes will be made to the line you transferred the upgrade from.

I'll be very surprised if Verizon does not get sued over this if there are changes made to the line the upgrade is transferred from without consent.

Been with Verizon since they bought Alltel, but I'm so close to canceling everything and going to Sprint....don't want a free phone....I don't even want a discount....more than willing to pay full retail...all my wife and I are asking is that Verizon put part of the phone cost onto a bill without taking away our data....and they won't even do that for us.

Just so you know the transfer upgrade process does work without removing unlimited data..All you have to do is transfer the upgrade then have it activated on the line with unlimited data, just did it today. So either Verizon reps are lying or there is not clear communication within Verizon.

I have an upgrade available on a line that has unlimited data. I also have an old flip phone that can be upgraded.

Can you outline what I would need to do in order to aquire a new subsidized Note 3 and keep my unlimited data.

Be Careful. Over the last 3 weeks I have talked to no less the 30 different VZW reps to including the 800#, In store reps, and live chat. I asked the "transfer of upgrade" question from a unlimited line to a dumb phone line to upgrade the dumb phone, and if by doing so, will I lose my unlimited plan from the line the upgrade came from?

40% tell me that I will lose the unlimited plan. 60% tell me that I will not. ALL of the VZW reps tell me that they know for sure because they do it all of the time. Now either one group or the other is just telling me a bald face lie, orf Verizon has the worst training in the world.

I'm very disappointed in Verizon. I can understand if they think it a good business move to stop offering unlimited. But they should not bend over the customers that have been with them for a long time. The same customers that are holding up their end of the deal by paying their bill on time. Sure your grandfathered. But not without being surrounded with landmines that will take your unlimited away.

If you have an old Nationwide family plan with less the 5 phones, you can add another line to your plan. The you just have to factor in the $240 the extra line with cost you over 24 months and add that cost to the price of the new smart phone you get. Is not $149 for a new smartphone. But it beats paying the $729 for the same phone.

You can find as many VZW reps that will tell you both ways. I asked no less then 30 over 3 weeks and 40% say I will lose it and 60% say I will not.

Right you are! But DO NOT, think you can "Transfer" a upgrade that you may have on the unlimited line to upgrade any dumb line on your account and think you will keep the unlimited. Sure I had plenty VZW reps tell me that I could and I would not lose unlimited. But I also had MANY that told me that I would lose unlimited.

If you use an upgrade to get that new smart phone. The upgrade better come from one of the dumb phones on your account, not your unlimited lines.

Let the number with unlimited be Line A and the other be called Line B.

Since both are upgradable it would be a lot easier than other options to

keep unlimited.

*note: it's best to do this on MyVerizon.

You would have to upgrade Line B with the phone that you want for Line A.

Meaning you're signing a new 2 year contract with line B. When you receive

your phone you would activate it, in turn the new phone would be activated

in Line B. After,you can now activate Line B 's old phone back to Line B

and activate your new phone on Line A. Wait about 5 minutes because it take

time for the network to see that line A's number is now on Line B. After

make a test call to make sure Line A's number comes out in caller ID.

Also remember line B will now be signed to a 2 year contract.

I've personally did this option last week after doing a lot of research and

taking to a few reps and kept in mind that some reps also told me that

there was no way to keep my unlimited. Shared plans can >>removed<<.

If you use her upgrade, you just have to pay the activation fee to activate the phone on your line. You should keep your unlimited data. Just go online and do the purchase from there. That way you can see what plan changes will or won't be made before you agree to the terms of the sale.

I've been grappling with this the last couple days. I have an unlimited data plan and want to replace my old phones with 5S's. I will pay full price for the phones. You can't do it online nor at the walkin store I went to. I was told I had to call customer service to purchase the phones. I haven't done so as yet, but am seriously looking at Sprint's unlimited as an option or buying the phones from a 3rd party as a last resort. They certainly don't make it easy to purchase these phones w/o "upgrading."

I also have a question! I have 4 Iphones all on unlimited data. I would like to upgrade my kids so they can have new phones. I am willing to give up MY unlimited data as I think I can control myself :smileyhappy: Is it possible to upgrade my line and get a new phone and then reactivate my old phone. I would then transfer their upgrades to mine and repeat the process two other times to get the new phones?

Will just my line lose the unlimited data or will all?

Yes, you can do that. But I think it is a mistake. 5 years ago you never used any data. now you feel you can control yourself and not use any more then the pitiful caps they want to saddle us with. And mark my words, 5 years from now you will need to use more data then ever. That's why Verizon took it away from us. Not because people do not need it. But because we are fast approaching a time when we will need unlimited data more then ever. Think down the road. Everyday there is a new company or service being invented and offered where you will need to burn data to take advantage of the given service. One day, you will struggle to keep it under 10GB per month.

Just pay full price for the phone. One day down the road you will be very glad that you did. Also you will have to wait 2 years after you do that for the first time.

I called yesterday to customer service and luckily got a very helpful agent. I told him I was wanting to keep my unlimited plan, etc., and he understood perfectly. I purchased 2 5S's at full price and retained my unlimited plan. It did take awhile to do it though. I was on the phone with him for at least an hour--no exaggeration. His computer was slow, and I guess he had problems pushing the order through while retaining my existing plan. He's been an agent for several years and knew what he was doing unlike the young lady that "helped" me in the walk-in store. During the hour we had time to chat and I told him about my experience in the store--he said he would look into it. Anyway, got the phones ordered (pretty spendy), but at least for now I retain my data plan....

So do I need to transfer upgrade from A (with unlimited data) to B (tiered data)? Then when new phone arrives, do I activate it on line B first, then swap phones? Or can I directly activate phone on line A? I went through the whole process of transferring the upgrade from a line with unlimited to a line with tiered. Then when I put in the order, my online account said that there was a pending order on the line with Unlimited data, so I cancelled my order. However, during the check out process, no where was I notified about losing my unlimited data.

The way we did it is we kept attempting chat sessions until we got a rep who said it would work (for documentation).

We then transferred the upgrade from the line with unlimited data to a line that had no data (basic phone) purchased the new phone online using the upgrade on the line with no data, picked up the phone in store and denied they activate it. Then called in to customer care and had the new phone activated on the line with unlimited data (the line we transferred the upgrade from).

I tried to do the upgrade an alternative line on my plan, then transfer the phone to my line and reactivate the old phone on my other line.

The first store I went to told me they couldn't do it, and if they did Verizon would bill my account $300 if I switch the new phone to my unlimited data plan line within 6 months.

I went to an authorized retailer after that and asked them to do the same thing and they told me they couldn't sell it to me subsidized since Verizon would charge them full price for the phone if they sold it to me subsidized and then it got transferred to a line with unlimited data within 6 months of being activated.

I absolutely despise Verizon and their despicable tactics of forcing people out of unlimited data. If it wasn't for my unlimited data I would switch to another carrier in a heart beat.

I can see that keeping unlimited seems to be important to you, mjrags. If line A is the line with unlimited and also the line that's eligible to upgrade, then transferring the upgrade to line B will still result in the new contract/plan for line A. This is called an alternate upgrade. Essentially, you're only setting up the upgrade transfer so that when the phone is received, it can easily be activated to the other line. The original line with the upgrade is the line that extends the contract to get the equipment at discounted pricing. A lot of customers are finding that a change to newer pricing isn't a bad thing and they can benefit from new pricing and a discount on equipment. I understand that the contract gets extended, but does that change the features on the phone (unlimited data). I don't see how that does. No where during the online purchasing process does it say I will forfeit the unlimited data option if I do a upgrade transfer.

I know you have grown close with your unlimited data plan over the years, but you may find out you don't even use it. How many GB do you use each month? Do you connect to WiFi where available? I would recommend running an account analysis,http://bit.ly/HrKckI, to view your average data usage.

I cannot speak on behalf of authorized retailers, because they have their own policies and procedures.

If you upgrade a line on your account, activate it on a different line on your account you will not be billed anything additional within six months. This only holds true for corporate stores, our website, or customer service over the phone.

Here's one way to keep your unlimited data plan. I did this two weeks ago (10/28/13) and it worked! It involved transferring an upgrade. Here's the gist of it...

My wife and I have a shared account (shared talk minutes but separate text and data options) on Verizon but my line has the unlimited data plan and unfortunately her line has the 2 GB data plan. We both had upgrades available for our lines. I first upgraded here phone to the Galaxy S3, and kept her same plan. I then transferred my upgrade to her phone, and did yet another upgrade the following day. So essentially she had two new Galaxy S3 phones. I then took one of the new phones, called Verizon and had it activated on my line.

Fortunately for us, we got the phones through Costco which allows for the Verizon activation fee to be waived and the phones are cheaper than on the Verizon Wireless web site (only $9.99 for the Galaxy S3). They activate the phone and give you the new phone on the spot so no waiting for shipping. The person at the Verizon kiosk in Costco was able to do the upgrade transfer from my line to my wife's line and upgraded my wife's phone the second time. Admittedly it didn't hurt to flirt with the kiosk attendee to make sure things went smooth... :-), but that part shouldn't be necessary.

Question for unlimited-data-forever:

Do you think this would be possible with two lines on the account, where one was recently added on through an Assumption of Liability?

Essentially:

- my line - unlimited data, 450 nationwide mins

- second line (family member, to be AOL-ed to my account): 2 Gb / $29.99, 450 nationwide mins

Both lines currently with Verizon, have an upgrade available.

My understanding of the "Assumption of Liability" is that the phone line that has the "Assumption of Liability" is the account owner. I find it interesting that when you added a second line to your account, the owner of the second line is being made the account owner. Why is that? Did Verizon force you to do it that way or was that your choice? I only ask because it makes me curious if Verizon wasn't allowing you to have the account owner be on the first line with the unlimited data plan.

In my particular case, I am the account owner on the first line of my account and my line has the unlimited data.

I see no reason why you wouldn't be able to upgrade the phone for your second line (family member, to be AOL-ed to your account) and then transfer the upgrade from your first line to the second line and perform another upgrade to get yet another phone. Just make sure you're upgrading the phone on the line that does NOT have the unlimited data plan associated with it. Clarify that you want no changes made of any kind to the first line. Also, I highly recommend that the account owner do the upgrades.

The account owner to any account is and will always be the account holder and responsible for the account. The account holder or any account manager on the account can do the AOL and assume the responsibility of more lines. But at the end of the day the account holder is owner and the responsible party for all lines on the account.

As far as what you see no reason, well I agree. But if you talk to 100 VZW reps, 40% will tell you that you will lose your unlimited data plan if that contract gets extend two years because you used the upgrade that was available for the given line that is assigned to the unlimited plan. It's not the fact that you used the upgrade, it is more of the fact the contract to that line the unlimited data service is assigned is being change and extended two years.

So what 40% of the VZW reps are saying, if the contract the unlimited data line is on is modified in ANY WAY, you will lose your unlimited data plan.

Now I keep saying 40% will tell you that. That means that 60% will tell you that you can transfer the upgrade from an unlimited line to one of the other "Dumb" phones on your account and you will not lose your the unlimited data plan from the line the upgrade came from.

Here is my spin. VZW reps can't be that poorly trained. If we can agree on that, this can only mean that someone is out and out lying to us. The ONLY way you can know for sure is to take the chance and give it a try. The problem is, the 40% that will tell you that you will lose your unlimited data will also tell you if/when you do/did lose it, it is impossible to get it back. The 60% that tell you that you will not lose your data plan will add, "and if you do lose it, we can just revers everything and get it back for you". My question is, why do that bother to tell you that if they are so sure you will not lose the data plan?

The only thing I know for sure is Verizon is treating existing customer very dirty. I can understand any company wanting to change their business model because they see ways to make more money due to the way the market is heading. But if you watch the market info, companies like Verizon each year are showing record numbers of new customers with new active lines. So it is not as if a hand full of old customers that still own unlimited lines are taking Verizon to the cleaners because they may use more data then another customer.

But if they want their customers to be "Brand Loyalty" to Verizon, Verizon should feel some loyalty to the customers that have been with the for years, but they do not and they want to squeeze every penny that can get their hands on from all of us. And the faster they can make every single unlimited data plan a thing of the past will be none to soon for them.

The fact they grandfathered unlimited data plans that loyal customers (have been paying for for years) was a good thing for them to do. However this gesture of loyalty is not as big of deal as it could have been when they surround these same customers with ways they can lose said data plan at every move they make.

If Verizon was interested in doing the right thing they should completely hold up their end of the bargain and everything should be business as always for these old customers to include letting them use upgrades to get new phones without losing anything. As they continue to pay their bills to Verizon on time every month. Anytime Verizon did make a change that change should be for the new customers after the date of the change takes effect.

Actually, I have not done an AOL yet. I'm thinking about it. In the past week, I have called or chatted with 6 different reps. 40% said that I can assume liability by transferring my husband onto my account. He would keep his tiered data and I would keep my unlimited. This brings up several issues:

1) can we share voice and swap $40 /month for 450 mins each for $70 per month for SHARED 700 mins? Half the Verizon reps said that THIS COULD BE DONE. The other half said no.

2) he will use his $199 upgrade to iPhone 5S BEFORE the AOL goes through - he is due now.

3) my upgrade is due in December. If I choose to pay full price for the phone to keep unlimited data, can I still use the $200 discount towards purchase of a 4G LTE phone? Some reps told me I could, others told me that can be applied towards SUBSIDIZED phone

4) if I dish out $650 for the 5S, does that mean I am going to month-to-month or does my contract renew for another 2 years? What happens to my subsidy that I won't use? Will it expire?

5) transferring my upgrade to him and having him use it on top of his upgrade would not work because we would have to open a third line and then pay for that - just not feasible. I only have one line on my account, so even when I AOL my husband, I will still NOT have a "dumb phone" line to use the upgrade, then downgrade.

6) EDGE MAX is NOT an appealing option. My bill would go from $70 per month to $100, so my monthly expenses would rise.

Any thoughts anyone?

You can use you transfer upgrade and keep your unlimited plan. Before I go into my story, I spoke to probably 5 Verizon reps...3 on the phone and 2 in person. 2 of the 3 over the phone reps said that it would not work, no if's and's or but's. The 1 of the 3 over the phone reps said that it didn't work but confirmed with his supervisor that it would work and told me how to go about doing it either in store or online/at home. Both in person reps (store manager and a reg sales rep) said that it would work and they have been doing it for some time now.

On my family plan, we have 3 lines: 2 with unlimited data and 1 dummy phone line. All 3 were eligible for upgrades.

First, I upgraded the dummy line with a newer dummy phone. Even the dummy phone needs to be updated at times too. :smileyhappy: Then I transferred the upgrade from one of the unlimited data lines to the dummy phone. Activated it on the dummy line with a 2GB plan (you need to add a data plan...don't worry it comes off after you re-activate your dummy phone), transferred the phone to the unlimited data line, and re-activated the dummy phone. Finally, I did the same thing for the 2nd unlimited data line. The end result: all 3 lines were upgraded with new phones and kept the same plan...family shared plan with 700 mins, unlimited text, and 2 unlimited data plans. BTW...this was all done in the store within an hour. Just had to make sure we weren't confusing the phones and lines.

If you can't find a store that is willing to do this, you can do it by transferring the upgrade online and then activating it yourself. Just make sure you first activate it on the dummy line THEN transfer the phone to your unlimited data line. If you really want to make sure that it works, you can always call Verizon after you received the phone to have it activated correctly on the dummy line then transfer the phone to your unlimited line.

I upgraded my dummy phone to a moto x then back down to a dummy phone but when I try to activate the moto x on my unlimited line, it says that line is not eligible and tries to get me to select a tiered plan.

Does the "loop-hole" to upgrade using another phones line (extending it 2 year contract) still work or no? Verizon told me it worked, and I even found recent posts from Verizon reps saying it worked. What gives?
