THE DATA USAGE ISSUE WITH THE IPHONE 5c

So, my son got his Christmas wish of the Iphone 5c. He had the Iphone 4 for at least 2 years. So, I started getting notifications that we are at 50% of our data limit, then 75% of our data limit... We have been with Verizon for the past 10 years....we have NEVER experienced this kind of usage on our data. We usually run at 1.5g...and I only have the 4g as a safeguard. Now here we sit with our billing cycle still running and having no data left. We are hardly ever off of our wifi. This is ridiculous. After reading the threads on the blogs....we need a fix and we need it now. I will not be renewing my contract with Verizon if we can't get this rectified. There is no reason for this kind of data usage...and especially while we are sleeping. There was a huge hit this morning...while at our house...while we were sleeping...and we have wifi....My droid has used hardly any data...and yet his iphone has eaten up 3g....RIDICULOUS.

On her phone in settings turn off LTE. It can cause data issues big time. I called verizon today and was transferred many times and eventually to Apple software. I suggest you call that number, but use a different phone, not hers. They can help you. The number is 800-275-2273. He had me go under general and reset and under reset click on the first option and reset all settings. The phone will not lose anything doing this. Then when the phone turns back on go under Wi-Fi and turn it back on. Now for the next 24 hours we are monitoring my usage to see if that fixes the problem. Apparently the iPhone 5c has been disconnecting from the Wi-Fi and has been using cellular data when it should be using Wi-Fi. Hope this helps!

Ditto for me, same issue with the iphone 5c that I gave my daughter for Christmas. She is not using it any different than her last phone - HTC Ryme. Issue must be resolved by Apple and Verizon, give them more data until the issue is resolved would be nice. Maybe our last contract with Verizon also! Some suggest turning celluar off, then it's not a phone, just a ipod touch! Not happy.

The last thing we want is for you to leave the VZW family. I can certainly understand how important it is to optimize your data on your devices. I personally have been optimizing my data by turning off cellular data features I don't use. To clarify if you visit Settings > Cellular > Scroll down to "Use Cellular Data for" and turn off any apps that don't need cellular data.

I spent a good two hours yesterday going through EVERY possible setting on my son's phone. We turned off auto updating, the LTE, Everything on his phone is manual...He realized that he couldn't send me a picture text because I have a droid and he has the iphone5c. So, we had to turn on his data, and I kid you not, we got hit for another .5 gig. THAT IS RIDICULOUS. The phones should not have to be babysat. I will be leaving Verizon as soon as the contract is up if no fix is found. He loves his Iphone and I love my droid...we can go love our devices elsewhere where we can actually USE them.

I went to YouTube last night, quite a few videos on this issue with the iphone 5 and 5c on Verizon. Turned as much off as possible, trying to turn the smart phone into a dumb phone to save data? I let you know if it helps, but looking at the usage logs on My Verizon for this phone, doesn't look like its helping much. Appears the biggest hit of data is done in the morning when the phone gets turned back on? some mornings almost 1/3 of gb. I'll play with the setings, if I can't slow the usage down, I will come into a Verizon store and have her moved back to her old phone until the issue is resolved or contract is up. I'll have a very unhappy preteen.

I certainly don't want you to have to turn off data completely, just the applications that may only need to use data over Wifi. Were you able to follow the steps I posted above to do so?

Additionally, if data was used right away when you turned the data back on it must be something that is constantly running that we need to find. First, I would go to Email > Outbox. Is anything "stuck" in the outbox trying to send? Second, do you notice any concerns with Wifi connectivity?

I'm having the same problems, and am very frustrated!!! My son was home using our wifi yesterday afternoon, but his iphone 5c used a big chunk of data anyway. Also while he was at school on their wifi. His phone even used data when I have the Family Base restrictions set to not allow his phone to be on yet in the morning!! This is completely ridiculous. I turned off LTE, turned off the "allow cellular data" for all his apps. At the current rate, he will run out of data halfway through the month again. I shouldn't have to buy a bigger data plan when there is clearly something wrong with either the phone or Verizon's service, or the system that logs data use. I was planning to buy new iPhones for both me and my husband in the next month or two, but not if this problem is not resolved! I will have to shop for another service, after being with Verizon for over a decade.

Yes, The default settings on the 5c will use up a LOT of cellular data, at least 4-6G per cycle until you go in and manually turn them off.

This is still so frustrating! My son is not away from wifi enough to go through 2GB of data in a week!! That's what happened this month. I checked his settings, turned off LTE. Still didn't help. I cannot afford to upgrade his plan to cover all this data. And I certainly will not be buying the two new iPhones (for my husband and me) that I was planning to buy in the next couple of months. I'm going to shop around for a different carrier. I'm disappointed, since I've been a loyal Verizon customer for over a decade. I have been happy with their service until I bought this iPhone 5C! I understand it's a faster phone than my old iPhone 4, but there's not way it's using this much data. Even dumbing it down hasn't helped. I use about 1GB a month. I could understand if my son used 2-3GB a month. But 2GB a week? That can't be just because his phone is faster. The phone uses data in little spurts even when it's connected to wifi. And this has added up fast.

Wow! That is a lot of data, AZVerizon. Faster service can mean faster access to data, so there's usually at least a small increase with 4G LTE devices because you can access about 10 times the websites in the same amount of time as 1 website on 3G. But Apple products are also designed to turn off WiFi when they're dormant. So if he's connecting to WiFi a majority of the time, please check the Cellular Data settings through Settings>Cellular on his iPhone and see what services has Cellular Data turned on. You'll also be able to get a glimpse at what's using the most data there. Turning off Cellular Data for things like email and web can significantly reduce the data used. Also, try the previous suggestion to make sure he doesn't have an email stuck in his outbox. That can continue to send and cause unintentional data usage.

I'll actually be able to turn the phone back on 2/7/14, the first day of the new cycle and start to monitor the usage again. The phone has been turned off for 2 weeks in fear of the data overage. My daughter used 1 GB of data per month with her old HTC that she used for 2 years, this iPhone will use over 1 GB data per week. Hopefully turning it into a dumb phone will reduce the data usage, but then what is the purpose of having this iPhone? We will probably switch it back to her old phone with lessoned learned, at least the HTC still can be used as a smart phone. Those with the iPhone 4 don't have the issue, so Apple screwed something up with their new iPhones and only Verizon is big enough to pressure them to fix the issue. I have ran into dozen's of people where I work that are complaining about the same issue with these newer iPhones.

The money I spent to buy this phone for my daughter, and the I phone 4s was free? Wow, if someone had told me that this phone would increase my data usage by more than double (and, yes, it has) I wouldn't have bought it.

I read these posts and the answers from the Verizon Employees and it shocks me. Verizon Knows this phone is using more Data and doesn't want to correct it. Why? Because it is increasing their bottom line at the same time it empties our wallets.

HEY VERIZON!!! We see through your smokescreen!!! Fix this problem!! Do it now, before I decide to end my relationship with your company. Oh, what was that, a TV ad that just said it'll pay for my disconnection fees? really????

I HAD BEEN WITH ALLTEL FOR 15 YEARS. MY DAUGHTER (ADULT) HAD A DROID FOR THE LAST 2 YEARS WITH 2G OF DATA AND NEVER ONCE WENT OVER HER USUAGE. I am sorry to hear that you are having a rough first month of service. We want to make sure that you are on the best plan possible. We usually see data go higher than normal when you first get a phone because you are downloading new applications and getting use to the phone. Do you have wifi at any location that you use? 4G LTE data can go faster because it is a faster speed. It allows you to do more. When you watch videos they can be in high definition which will use more data. We encourage to shut off your cellular data when you are not using the data on the phone or are in wifi. I am having the same issue with data usage. I added my daughter to our plan and her 5c is causing a huge up in our data. My BF and I never used more than 2gb of data per month. The first week I got a notice that 50% of data was used. We had to increase our plan to 12GB of data from 2GB. I took your advice and turned off my cellular data but when I was connected to WIFI i couldn't use the phone at all. Couldn't even text without turning it on. At this point we"re ready to pay the cancellation fee and leave Verizon. Ive been a customer since 2002!!

rnjsb- You have been with us for a long time and we don't want to see you go. We know that monitoring data usage is important and going from 2GB to 12GB is a huge jump. If you turned on wifi (with cellular data off) and your data isn't working that means there is a problem with your wifi connection. Have there been any updates on your phone?

Let's cut through all the BS. What do I have to turn off and how do I turn it off, to make my daughters i phone 5s use only the two GB per cycle she used to use and not the 13GB per cycle she is consuming now.

I've read all the responses to the many questions, and they all have the same theme. "are you hooked up to wi-fi?" STOP IT.

WHAT DO I HAVE TO SHUT OFF ON THIS PHONE TO STOP THIS INSANITY!!!!! (at $10 per GB per cycle my daughter was costing me $20 & now she is costing me $130 per cycle. I know why you don't want to answer this question with a straight answer, because currently your bleeding us dry.)

So was having no data usage issues with my daughters iPhone 5c until this month, now huge spike in usage. Had her turn off data usage today when at home, but thinking of changing phones if problem persists. Really sucks that this is an issue. I have had Verizon for at least 10 years and don't want to change providers just to keep her with an iPhone 5c.

I hear you and we don't want to see you go either; I had the same situation when my two teens upgraded to smartphones. Try Family Base to limit their data http://vz.to/1af0LgY or from the phone, go to Settings>Cellular. You will see all the apps that use cellular data from your allowance, turn off anything that is video (Youtube, Netflx, Hulu) and music (Pandora, iHeart Radio, etct) streaming; this will limit the use to only on wi-fi.

I too have had the same issue with an iPhone 5c that we got my daughter for Christmas... we used an average of 10GB per billing cycle and this month we have used 31 GB!!!! I have called Verizon several times, went into a Verizon store and get the same run around... it is a bunch of you know what. I am so over this... we don't have the money to pay these kind of bills. She had an iphone 4s prior, with the same apps, same games, etc. We have done nothing different aside from her getting a new phone. We have deleted a ton of apps from her phone trying to figure out what in the heck is causing Something is NOT right!!! I don't care what these Verizon people say, there ARE known issues with these phones and if something doesn't change quickly and if we continue to get these generic "solutions" to the problem, we WILL be changing cellular companies!!! I mean the solutions are absurd - what is the point of a smartphone if you have to turn everything off??!! I want answers.

I am not new to Verizon, data usage, smart phones, Apple devices, etc. We have the same number of lines as we did before we got my daughter the 5c for Christmas... simply went from a 4s to a 5c. I read your "tips." What a joke. I have listened to all the suggestions all of the Verizon reps have given... basically we turn the smart phone into a basic phone... that is the bottom line. Meanwhile you continue to collect the monthly fee for us to have the smart phone on our account. This is such a joke. I am not the only customer with this issue - just google iPhone 5c and watch what pops up... there are thousands with this same issue. You explain to me how a 10 year old uses 17.5 GB of data

If this isn't excessive, I don't know what is… some of these are 2GB at one time - she doesn't video stream, doesn't watch movies or TV on her phone, doesn't have Snapchat, we deleted Minecraft a month ago hoping that would help, we don't let her friends use her hotspot anymore. Really the only thing she uses is Instagram and she sends text messages and that is about it… so, again, explain this to me… Some of these are in the middle of the night when I KNOW she is asleep!!

I see your point. Ultimately, devices can still be transmitting data even when the device is not in use at night if an app is still open. Apps can be closed by double clicking the home key and then scrolling to locate the open apps. Next, let's figure out what's causing all the data transmissions. Please go to settings > cellular > and scroll down to see which app is using all of the data. You can then force close or uninstall that app to see if it makes a difference.

We certainly understand your concerns and appreciate you providing us with these examples.

When upgrading from a 3G device to a 4G device, although usage may remain the same on the phone, the data usage will increase due to the higher consumption of data 4G devices have since they are 10X faster than 3G devices.

Another way to help prevent such high data usage is utilizing a Wi-Fi connection whenever available. Please keep in mind that all smartphones run on background data and can be synchronizing information in the middle of the night even when phone is not personally being used. The best way to prevent this from happening is temporarily shutting down the cellular data connection when not in use.

I am in the same boat!!! My son went from a 4s to a 5c....his data used 50..75 then 95% all in an hour while he was sleeping and it was on a charger...called verizon and they told me when the phone shuts down it goes to 4G...so to turn off data..REALLY!? Why am I paying for a smartphone?....did that...now data maxed again this month...called verizon....said its because we use ITUNES....really!?....i already pay apple for this service...and my daughters IPOD TOUCH doesnt get data charges!!!!!.....looking at going to smart talk....cant pay 225.@00 a month for phones that we have to have turned off! any solutions to this problem?

I just got an Iphone 5c and the one thing that I am noticing is that while it seems to remember my wifi login at my house, it does not when I go to work each day. I have to remember first thing to log on to our wireless account --- but even then, it drops it and switches back to LTE frequently. I previously had an Iphont 4 and it NEVER had a problem with the wireless account at home, work, Starbucks, etc. It always automatically joined open networks or alerted me as to when I might need to log onto another network. This iphone is quickly becoming a problem if it cannot properly search and log onto networks. I hate to believe it is a ploy by Verizon to charge more for data usage. I did contact Apple about it and they said it is an issue with Verizon, not Apple. Might be a good class action lawsuit if so many are having this problem?

I appreciate you going as far as contacting Apple about the trouble connecting to WiFi, bssigirl1. We want to see you connecting to WiFi to concern your data too and I assure you we are not blocking your phone from connecting properly. Are you connecting to a VPN when you are at work? Is the WiFi network at work a secured WiFi connection? If you turn off Cellular Data (Settings>Cellular) while you're at work, is it able to stay connected to WiFi or does it frequently drop to no data connection?

My daughter's 5s is on Verizon, my 5s is on AT&T. Neither of us are data hogs, yet her usage skyrocketed this last month and I do not have a similar problem with AT&T and I don't have to 'dumb down' the phone and turn everything off to stay within using about 4Gig each month. There is something wrong either the Verizon iPhone or Verizon data network. It's not a problem with AT&T so why isn't Verizon taking action before they lose every customer they have at next renewal?

To begin, I would suggest checking your daughter's iCloud settings. Please go to Settings>iCloud>Documents & Data>Use Cellular Data, and be sure this is off. This can often cause high data usage, because it consumes data in the background.

I have been with Verizon for 10+ years (and another 10 years with the company it was before Verizon bought them out) My son has a Apple iPhone 5c he got back in February. My wife and I both have Android phone. We have a shared 4gb shared family plan. For the first 5 months we had no unusual data usages. All three of us pretty much kept our data usage under 1gb each. Then in the last month my sons has spiked dramatically. He is almost at 2gb and has a week to go. So after reading the posts in this forum, hoping to find out why his data is skyrocketed, can I say first I am disappointed with the Verizon representatives solutions. I did not pay $300 to dumb down my sons phone by having shut off cellular data when on connected to our wifi, then turn it back on later. This is not a fix. You might as well say if you turn off your phone this will solve the problem. So I investigated further online. I read a few posts that iCloud sucks up a lot of data. I then recalled in the last month I turned on my sons iCloud account to back up his pictures he takes (and he takes alot). I have no idea if this is the solution, I am going to watch his phone for the next cycle. I do know that that as I sat here typing this his phone has not used any data. Maybe someone else can try this out and see if that seems to be the issue?

I had an iPhone 4 for over 2 years and NEVER went over my data. Switched to an iPhone 5C about 6 months ago and have gone over EVERY month, even though I am on my 5C WAY less than my 4. I resorted to having to delete my email, change ALL of my setting to where I get NO notifications, with no avail. Now I keep my data turned off and only turn it on to see if I have any iMessages, do I what I need to very quickly and hurry up to get off... Which is a huge pain and I do not think anyone should have to go through that!! My plan renewed on the 7th and I have already received a text that I am at 75%. There is now way at all I have used 75% of my data!!!! So my friend and I started researching and I am beyond shocked to see I am CLEARLY NOT the only person this is happening to. There is nothing else I can do besides cut my phone off and never turn it on. I mean to even communicate with another Apple device has turned into a nightmare!!! So what I'm asking is VERIZON and APPLE what are you going to do about this HUGE problem that obviously everyone that has an iPhone 5C through Verizon is experiencing.

I recommend enabling WiFi always and connect to open WiFi networks when available to minimize data usage. Well it isn't iCloud. In 4 days my son's phone has used almost a full gb. What is going on? I would say 90% of the time he is on our WiFi.

Ive had my iphone 5 for about 11 months. when it was the IOS6 it did fine on data. now every month i get 2 3 or 4 gb overage charges! ive done all the research i can on turning this off, turning that off, reset this, reset that. and still i have overages. The problem is that where ever you go with the Iphone5 or newer, and are on IOS7, and you dont have very good cell coverage, as in regular cell coverage, VERIZON KNOWINGLY supplements the cell coverage with DATA. Granted, this allows you to have service, but it eats your data alive. Ive been having these problems for months and the last tech i talked to on the phone gave me that reason. have crappy cell service? dont worry, vertizon with supplement your coverage with data. EVEN when your connected to WIFI. Because Verizon doesnt combine data and voice anymore, they are able to do this.

Verizon, this is ridiculous. and needs to get fixed. i came to verizon from Tmobile with hopes of better value and i now can see i made a VERY big mistake. my cycle ended yesterday, the 21st and ive apparently already used 1.75 GB of my data. and ive been home on wifi for 2 hours. its 205AM here in seattle. on august 22nd. Thats horse ****.

My phone bill is now 435$, for two phones with 6GB data shared, because of your data overages.

I'm sad to hear about any unexpected data usage! I would love to get to the bottom of this and make sure you only use data when you want to. I do want to advise first since you bill cycle just ended on the 21st, any checking of data usage by dialing #DATA or checking on My Verizon may not be accurate since the reporting is placed on hold while your bill is compiled. If it's still the same high amount come Monday, we definitely need to take a look at what's been going on for the past few days.

In the mean time, let's check what's accessing data on your phone! You can do this by going to Settings>Cellular. At the bottom of this page is a list of all your apps and how much data they've used. At the very bottom of this list is the "Last Reset" date. What date do you have there? What app is using the most data and how much? If you open "System Services", what's using the most data and how much? Once gathering this information, can you choose "Reset Statistics" please? Then, we can monitor what's using data here together.

I'm not paying you these overage charges if you guys can't figure out why so many people are getting hit with these overage charges to begin with. Think of this way. Why would they fix it? It is making them MILLIONS of dollars in pure profit.

Until a government agency gets involved to test their data counters and to certify they are accurate, the overages will continue.

Only when and if the government finds fault with the meters will Verizon be forced to fix the data issues.

I know how you feel. I have the same problem with my 2 iPhone 5c's. Never had over usage problem until now. With all the complaints that I see in this forum, I think it is time we get with the Attorney Generals office and file a class action lawsuit charging Verizon with fraudulent overcharges. I hate that it has to come to this point, but when they actively promote a product that has a defect in programming that overcharges its customers, then they should be held accountable. First thing Verizon should do is put out a commercial informing the public of their problem. Second, they should contact all their customers that currently have or had an iPhone 5c and apologize for not handling this sooner! Third, Verizon should offer rebates to these customers for any overcharge or inconvenience. Next, Verizon should stop offering these phones until they have fixed the problem, as not to inconvenience any future customer. Finally, until this bug is corrected, Verizon should offer a minimum 4 times the normal data usage on any wireless plan that has an iPhone 5c to prevent future overcharge. This is how a company should act: Customers are number one, and that Verizon stands behind their products and services! This is the company that I used to know and love.

NO class actions are allowed.

The Attorney Generals Office may be a good start, the Public Utilities Commission in you state may be another, or like in NY the Consumer Protection Board.

Another point I want to make. Verizon does not make the Apple iPhone or any devices. It would be Apple Inc. that would have to investigate the data issue.

For the record, I own 2 iPhone 5S devices and I never use more than 25 MB on each per month. I am constantly as much as possible on WiFi. I have cellular data off. And I really don't have to since I also have unlimited data on both devices.

But I don't have that data drain as I see listed on the forum. I see posts saying its not just iPhones.

We just moved to the iphone 5c from iphone 4 our usage went from 2.4 to over 5 half way through the

month! That's crazy!!!

Every month we are going way over data. We have four phones and share 12 mg. Last month we used 17!!! It's the kids and I set data limits on them but not data does not come back on when the month starts over. Any idea? You can never live chat with anyone anymore.

I definitely understand your concern about the data usage on your devices. The 4G iPhone devices are a little different, by design, from Apple, the manufacturer. When using Wifi, if the device goes to standby mode (when the screen goes blank), cellular data is used by default. I suggest that when using Wifi, please go to settings/cellular data, and turn off cellular data.

Here is the situation that I am experiencing and some of you may see the same if you take a close look at your data usage details. My daughters phones in normal use for texts, etc. are using data at extremely low data. Then, on random days, we will get a string of 4 or 5 occurrences of 20MB to 100MB data usage, mysteriously spaced at 6 hour intervals over a 24 hour period or so. This is what is sucking up so much data, and it seems to occur whether the phones are on wi-fi or not. Where are these data hogs coming from? How can I tell what is causing these occurrences so that I can get rid of them.

We followed advice from Elector above and went through all of the apps on the iPhones and turned off cellular data, except for a few. It limits the data usage, and the kids can turn it back on if needed.

We we did not have any overages last month.

We also got the family base option. It is $5extra per month, but it will turn off at 2gb and will not allow a phone to go over on data.

I also am having the same problem. My husband is using 13 gb alone with his 5c just looking at facebook and listening to pandora every now and then. I have a 4s and never go over 1gb, there is definitely something wrong here! We have gone through and turned off everything that could be running in the background using data, cellular data, etc... We are getting charged outrageous amounts of data even when he is at home on wifi. I tried to call verizon yesterday and they act like there is nothing they can do. Spoke with the dept to cancel service, but that got me nowhere as I am not added as an "authorized user" on our account. The woman on the phone acted as if she was more than happy to cancel our account did nothing to try to get a 4 yr customer to stay, then told me I was not allowed to cancel so my husband would have to call. We will be going to AT&T this week and see what they have. Im not paying verizon's $65 & $70 data overages anymore!

No need to call and cancel. Just go to the carrier of your choice and port the device account to them.

You need your Verizon cell number, last four digits of your husbands social security number. It is a good idea to bring a copy of your last bill so the account number can be accessed by the receiving cell carrier.

And you don't lose your cell numbers. If you call and cancel you lose your numbers.

You also will have to pay for new devices and activation fees per line at your new carrier.

I tried to DM you and the system would not let me, perhaps Im doing something wrong. But here is what I wrote in my response:

I was told to DM someone about my issue with the 5c. I have been taking pictures of my data usage since Friday and it clearly shows that my cellular data is increasing even while on wifi. Also, I have been calling for months about this issue. The rep from Verizon who ran the analysis on the phone a few months ago offered me no resolution after she politely told me something was running in the background for six hours a day. I barely sleep six hours a day let alone have time to sit on my phone for that long every day. I asked her after she relayed that information what I should do and she said I'm not sure. After calling Verizon customer support this past Wednesday, the store manager in Strongsville, OH contacted Apple support who ran an analysis and could not pin point where the data usage was coming from. They deemed it a hardware issue and replaced the phone. Unfortunately, its still doing the same thing, so at this point it seems to be a network issue. At this point, Verizon owes me an adjustment. I have proof that the network has issues. If I am on wifi, the cellular data should not move. No matter how small the increase, if this is happening on a daily basis, it can eventually lead to overages. Im not paying another dime of this bill until an adjustment is done and a resolution is reached. If you need me to email the pics Ive taken I can. Sprint, Tmobile or AT&T are looking like better options at this point if this doesn't get resolved.

We are having the same problem! My son received this phone for Christmas 2013, recommended by the guy at Verizon because it was such a good phone, etc. It is horrible and eats data! My son is on a college campus with wifi everywhere, yet his phone just consumed 2 gigs in less than a week! Every month we deal with overage costs. My husband has a DROID with 4 gigs and never uses more than 2 - he uses his phone a lot! I have 5 on my ipad and watch videos - never go over. Something is very wrong with this phone!

we called verizon support and the person was very nice and went through all of the things necessary to turn off cellular Data. We have an iPhone 5 and 5s. Last month we did not go over.

YOu you can reset usage for the apps to determine how much each app is using

you can set an app to turn off cellular so it will only use wi fi

you have to go through the phone and do this for each app

and you can sign up for family base so that it will not go over the limit.

I had the cellular data turned off and I watched the numbers continue to go up...while the data was off and on wifi. I went back into the store again and they called into tech support for me and I was so graciously informed by the rep ( once I point blank asked) that beginning with the 5th generation iPhone, once the screen goes black/idle, the phone automatically switches back over to the cellular network. I was floored and really had to get my thoughts together afterwards. At this point it seems to be more of an issue with Apple. But if these carriers choose to promote the phone, they need to offer plans to suit these phones since unlike the android, apple users cant turn the option of for the phone to switch between the wifi and cellular. Also, when I turn off the cellular data, some of my messages and other alerts are not coming through even on wifi. I have a child and I cant risk not getting an alert or email from her school because I have to sit and baby sit my data usage on my phone. These are supposed to be smart phones, but the only thing they're smart enough to do is burn a hole in our pockets every month paying for more and more data.

Joining the crowd on this one. My daughter upgraded from the iPhone 4 to 5 and now her data usage is sky HIGH.

She was using about 2 GB per month on her iPhone 4...

Now with the iPhone 5s she has gone through 5.5 GB in just 2 weeks.

My wife and son still have iPhone 4's and they have only used 500 MB each in the same time frame with similar usage.

Just this morning at 5:45 AM the iPhone 5 used 500 MB.

I am glad that I have an Android phone...

I use it for NAV, weather, Facebook, and work email all day and I average 800 MB per month.

I'm soooo glad others are seeing the same thing. I have been apoplectic over the last few months, having carefully tracked my usage when I was on Sprint and setting up my contract with what I felt like was a decent sized data plan. However, my daughters iPhone 5 uses an amazing amount of data, and I've been going through the roof with my daughter. Sometimes a week into the month getting usage warnings (I've set up all the warnings)! I have gone from 2gig (we never collectively used over 2 gb a month on Sprint), to 4gb to a 6 to keep from going over. Her iPhone kills my android in data usage.

I finally had to tell her to turn off data while in the house (we always use wifi in our house or the houses of people who let us connect), or out on the road unless she really needs it, the amount of policing has been hilariously stupid.

Yes, I think she naturally uses more data than me, she is a teen, but I don't restrict my usage at all and I'm always way under her levels.

Something... is... wrong with the iPhone or with how Verizon calculates data with iPhones. I hope this issue gets huge momentum, and Verizon get to the bottom of it. I would hate to see it become some sort of class action lawsuit (oh my gosh that was sooo MSNBC).

Please Verizon, figure this out.

It always seems to be the young people. They like videos, streaming music, intense games and chat apps. Using those off wifi will use a lot of data. Don't blame the phone or Verizon.

This is a duplicate post, but assuming it works it needs to be shared broadly. Verizon isn't likely to try and fix it - they're raking it in - and Apple apparently set default to data for better user experience. For those of us who are satisfied the user experience of our smartphone on wifi:

I think I have found a solution:

1) go to Settings->General->Reset->"Reset Network Settings". This will force a reboot of the phone & erase all of the networks previously stored.

2) when the phone comes back on, go to Settings->Wi-Fi-> set "ask to join networks" to "on".

3) join the network, and input password.

4) after successfully connecting, leave the Wi-Fi network coverage area once, and come back into it. It should connect automatically again

5) go back into Settings->Wi-Fi-> set "ask to join networks" to "off"

Having the same problem and Verizon Wireless will not fix this or even admit its a problem. Even after many calls and reboots and basically turning off all the functions of my daughters phone. Going back to Sprint this week for unlimited data. There is no possible way my daughter uses 5x the data of anyone else in my family. She is in school most of the day and plays a sport. We have been nothing but disappointed since switching to Verizon Wireless from Sprint a few years ago.

I contacted Verizon Support today and they have a Software Update that is suppose to fix the issue of using Mobile Data instead of WiFi. They gave me additional data for this month to cover the extra usage by the iPhone.

I switched my service to sprint. Neither Apple or Verizon could identify why my phone was pulling so much data. Apple had the phone swapped and deemed t a hardware issue. I contacted Verizon and asked for an adjust for three months of service back to the data plan I had prior to all of this, which may have been an adjustment of about 50.00 for the past three months. The supervisor told me that wasn't Verizon's fault that the iPhone has data issues and he would not adjust anything. I contacted Apple and they offered no resolution either. I referenced these forums with other people having the same issue and the reps and managers all sounded oblivious to what the forums even were. At this point Ive ported my main line over from Verizon and my sisters phone is coming off of Verizon along with my daughters tablet. I will be contacting their executive Vice President and also the federal trade commission to report this issue. I see a class action lawsuit coming against Verizon and Apple don't with the issue and stop passing the buck.

That's all they're going to do. They told me when I complained that I never went over my data. Well no I didn't because I kept increasing it so I didn't have to pay overages. I'm done with Verizon they're dead wrong and they need to address the issue directly.

ALL iPhones randomly regardless of carrier have this issue. Some don't stand out as much...

1. they are not the largest carrier

2. They have unlimited data on Sprint and T-Mobile so it often goes unnoticed. However those with limited data plans complain about their usage(They end up being throttled after a few days). Sprint well in a lot of locations Sprint service is poor so things go unnoticed or even show a lot of usage.

Verizon and carriers will get a free pass if it's a coded bug. Carriers don't touch code unlike popular belief.

There is no class actions allowed per decision of the US Supreme Court. So that kills that idea.

Apple admitted it is their issue and the fix is iOS 8.0.2 which you should have updated your iPhone to.

All iphones from iPhone 4s through the new iPhone 6&6+ can receive the update.

I am having the same problem with data usage that have been increased from 2gb to 20 gb in a year and verizon still telling me we are going over our data usage this month again , the 21gb its not enough.

We definitely don't want you to have that issue! Have we checked what apps are using the data? You can see that under settings>cellular and then scroll down to the app list. It will say how much data they have used under the name of the apps. If that hasn't been reset recently we can reset that at the bottom of the page to only see what is used going forward.

It does not show data usage amounts for each app in that list. It does show data usage in system services at the very bottom. But individual apps are not listed there. Regardless, the info in system services may be helpful. Most data usage issues go back to the user simply using too much off wifi. Videos, games, Facebook and etc. Even FaceTime and iMessage. FaceTime is a big hog.

Anyone who doesn't see this for the scam it is isn't paying attention. Verizon has known about this problem since at least 2012 as far as I can tell by what I've found in the Internet so far and here in 2015 it's still a problem. 3 years of overages charges on how many millions of iPhones connected to their service 12 months a year.....sounds like millions of dollars in scammed profits to me. And the only answer still being given is dumb down your smart phone or turn it into an iPod.

If this isn't a scam I don't know what you call it.

I know exactly how you feel. We have their Home Fusion internet service and Verizon claims we've used 30gb in 10 days! Once I got the notice, we unplugged the device, changed the password and stayed off the internet and still accumulated an additional 9gb of usage over the next 20 days. Their customer service dept is the worst I've ever seen - they insist that we are using the data.

We are actively looking at switching everything we have to a different provider. Willing to take the termination fee hit.

This is not a scam. It is the Apple IOS 7&8 operating system. This was created by the Chinese and over there they still charge per TXT message with unlimited data plans. A lot of the applications written for IOS are being written to favor DATA. One example is iMessage. This app sends ALL text messages to other iPhones using data and will only send SMS to Andriod Phones. Apps like iTunes and iCloud like to sync data at different times of the day and prefer Data vs WiFi. Where Google Play will only sync when connected to WiFi.

You don't have to DUMB your phone. Just turn OFF Cellular data for apps tha you don't use all the time and this will force them to sync only when connected to WiFi. You will want to leave it on for app like Maps and Pandora that you use while driving a car.

With some of these iPhones, the wifi antenna is faulty, or the software controlling it is. ( reference IOS 7 update and the huge number of iphone 4S wifi antenna failure )

The wifi fan shows in notification bar, it says it's connected, but with mobile data off, you can't use internet,

TA DA! One reason for mobile data to be high.

I Will have to ask my sons what else is disabled when cellular data is off. On my Android, I still get calls and text. I'm not sure that is true for iPhone.

That's the pint if you think you have wi-fi on and mobile data off and you can't connect then that means you WOULD have been using mobile data. So that's a GOOD thing you aren't doing that when you think you are using wi-fi. if you're wi-fi isn't working then you do NOT want to be using moible data in many if not most cases anyway. So yes my solution fixes the "using moible data on wi-fi" issue.

If you mean, turn mobile data off as a diagnostic tool, yes. If not connecting to wifi is the only cause of data overage, which it is not. And it isn't an acceptable solution to completely hobble one's smart phone all the time.

Switch phones with him and see if the problem follows whatever phone he uses. If it does, you know the issue is his usage. If YOU now have a big data problem, then you know it's, FOR SURE, the phone.
