Unknown large uploads or downloads

RE: MIFI wireless internet service - This started when the current data period started (6/17) - never saw this before. See pattern (9:21,3:/21, 9:21, 3:21 .....). Can't tie this into any known upload/downloads that we have done. At this rate will max our 10Gig in no time! Any ideas?

Are those MB? If so they are pretty large. Perhaps someone has hacked into your network. Or you have your computer or other programs set to auto update. Or possibly you have a computer virus.

Also I believe those times are just when Verizon reports the data usage. And the total amount may be what was use in the previous 6 hours. So no video or music streaming of any kind? No online gaming?

Oh my! I appreciate you bringing this forward, smartaleck.texan. It's great to see that you are keeping account of your usage. I do want to provide some insight into the usage. The usage data may be delayed depending on when the usage is compiled. I do want to offer a suggestion to ensure that the usage does not lead to overage. I would suggest turning off the device when not in use.

The exact same thing is happening to me!! Started on June 4th. My data usage is at times 1.7 gigs at a time on a six hour schedule and we are not even on the phone or computer when it happens. It seems to be coming from my myfi connection for my desktop computer.

I have to keep paying Verizon for more Data because I am going over my 10 gig allowance. This problem has cost me 10 gigs already and still counting.

Oh No! That definitely sounds a bit strange. We definitely want your data charges to bill accurately. I'm glad to hear you were able to narrow down the root cause. Do you power off and disconnect your MIFI when not using? Is your computer powered off as well? Please share details, thanks!

I also have this problem. The data transfers seem to be happening every six hours, and our Data Usage is way over what it should be. We're not heavy users and never stream movies or anything data intensive. Our usage was reset on the 13th but we're already at 4.75 GB after 15 days.

Looking at our data usage, I see only reports every six hours and nothing else. Presumably it's the MiFi device reporting usage at those intervals. That means I don't have any way to verify what connections were made and how much data was transferred.

There is no-one close to me using my connection and the password is enabled, albeit the original WEP key that came with the device.

I have the same problem with our two iPhone 5's - but not the 4S so it is obviously a problem with that model of phone. Why isn't Verizon just being honest about that? Turning off the device or disconnecting your wifi service is not an adequate solution to a problem that is clearly either Verizon's or Apple's. I have a SmartPhone for a reason and I am not going to turn it off or shut down my wifi or disconnect my email just so Verizon doesn't reach into my purse and take my money. I am spending my day shopping for a new carrier.

I'm not totally convinced it's Verizon's fault, but it would be great if we could at least understand what is being transferred and when, rather than a six hourly report. It would be useful to know, for example, whether iTunes downloading podcasts is responsible, rather than my Avira Antivirus downloading updates (which I discovered was also set to look for any updates every six hours). I agree, switching the device off is not a feasible option. Incidentally my 3GS and my wife's iPod Touch are part of this as are our two laptops. Avoiding receipt of email on more than one device is probably a good idea, as is checking anything on the computer that does scheduled updates or backups over the Internet.

I have been having this problem with the iPhone 4S, after I update to the new iOS. Giant spike in data usage that would appear to ANYBODY to be fraudulent. I agree, it defeats the purpose to have a smart phone if you're having to turn data on and off every time you want to use an app. Basically, I don't use the phone now, and it's still racking up data charges, with data for all apps turned off. I try to keep the phone line going so that I can receive calls and texts. That's it. I'd love to hear what provider you go with and what they offered you.

I asked customer service for a detailed report on data usage, specifically by Safari, on my iPhone 4S, and they told me to get my lawyer to contact them with a subpoena.

We definitely want to help anyway possible! I understand wanting to accurately keep track of your data usage. We do recommend manually ending the connection between any MiFi's and other devices to ensure nothing is updating by itself in the background. A lot of times, applications and programs are set up to automatically update, which can cause unexpected data usage.

I'd also check out www.vzw.com/datacalculator to get an idea of what music streaming, uploading pictures, etc uses.

On My Verizon, it should let you know how much data you're using with the time, data, how long the session was (minutes of use), and amount of data used. Our system does try to update it in as quickly as possible.

RuthJ- I completely understand why you are concerned with the data usage. Smartphones are great devices, but also keep in mind they are like mini computers in your pocket. The reason we advise customers to manually turn off the data or to check your wi-fi connection is for your protection against data overages. As a consumer, you have the option to leave your device turned on, however, we want you to understand this is how the device functions and this is not specific to Verizon or Apple. I use an Android device and I have to do the same to keep apps from running or updates from automatically using my data. We are here to provide solutions and hope that this information is helpful.

I've seen this complaint before with cell phone internet services. Be it Fios or mifi, the data usage keeps going up by leaps and bounds. I would opt for internet ANY other way but this way.
