The deposit can range from $0 to $400, based on your credit history and other factors. When you go to open an account, they will run a credit check and tell you how much of a deposit is needed. Age may be a factor too - one son, when he was 19, needed $400 to open an account. My other son, at 24, did not need any deposit, and my daughter also did not need a deposit (she was 23 or 24 at the time).
The son that needed the deposit was actually moving to AT&T, and AT&T required the deposit. The other 2 were doing an AOL from my account at Verizon to another Verizon account in their name - they did not need to pay a deposit when they took over their lines in their own name.
