Power Button Issues

So within the past few days my galaxy s3 has been having power button issues. It's become very sensitive. So sensitive that anytime my finger passes by the button it goes to my lock screen. Also after I'm done using it I press the power button to put it to hybernate it will light up again and will consistently do that and it takes several tries to get the option screen to pop up so I can turn it off. Once it's off, it will continuely vibrate and then it will turn on again. It seems to be getting worse. I've had this phone for less then a year with no other issues til now. If anyone knows about this and can give me some information on how to fix the problem, it would be much appreciated.

Have you tried shutting the phone off and pulling the battery and waiting 30 seconds, reinstall and turn back on.

If that doesn't work, reset to factory conditions, requires backup of all data.

If that doesn't solve the issue it is probable a hardware issue. Since the phone is less than a year old it's still under warranty, so you can get it fixed that way.

So I wan unable to turn off the phone. I stopped in at the Verizon store and the associate was able to finally turn off the phone. The battery was removed and then reinstalled and turned back on. That did not fix the problem, the button was still very sensitive and doing the same thing. The associate determined that it was probably a hardware issue and told me that since it was still under the manufactures warranty that they would send me a replacement phone, cerified like new. Well since Saturday the phone is now working properly and I haven't had any issues with the power button and flicking back to the lock screen. Maybe it was a fluke but I am not going to take any chances, should get the replacement phone today.

If I were in your shoes I would send it in for a replacement. Since the soft reset didn't accomplish anything and it fixed itself later on, chances are the problem will come back. Better to get it replaces while it's still under warranty.

It does not seem like this issue is prevalent because I spoke to Jessica (Rochester NY Ctr) in Tech Support and she said that there is only a handful of people who have this problem.

This has happened to my original (new) phone and the refurburished Verizon sent me. I am receiving a new refurburished phone in a couple days.

Soft reset, factory default reset and safe mode does not have an effect on this issue.

I think this is something that should be looked at it in more detail.

I had my S3 since November of 2012, and within the last two weeks, it started giving me power button issues as well. I went to the store, they warrantied out a new phone for me. I received the new phone and it is doing the exact same thing. Any time I even come close to the left/east side of the phone it triggers the power button... They are sending me yet another replacement phone, we will see if this fixes the problem. Seems odd to me that my first phone never had this problem until recently, and now the new phone is doing the same thing....

Hopefully the new device fixes the problem.

I love how helpful Verizon's customer support seems when you're not standing in front of them at one of their stores! My entire extended family are all Verizon customers for over ten years and none of us have had them effectively correct one of our issues. I currently have 2 non-working Galaxy 3s sitting on my counter and my 2 teenage nieces both crying and arguing about who can use the next upgrade. The first phone was taken out by the sudden death screen or whatever they are calling it...whatever the name is, obviously it is a software problem that many people are experiencing. Took the phone to my friendly Verizon store and guess what!!! They won't do a thing about it even though the phone is under a year old because the screen had a small crack in the corner...REALLY? We all know it's not because of the screen. The second phone I took to the store yesterday because this one is having the issue with the super sensitive power button. I googled the issue before even going up there an'd again it's clearly an issue with the phone itself and not due to mistreatment or damage, but of course, once again Verizon won't do anything about it and instead, like a proper sleasy used car saleman, tried to talk my niece into buying a new phone. So...THANK YOU VERIZON for your sub par phones and shitty customer service...I have a feeling you'll be losing all 17 family members once our contracts run out

ldmk13, we certainly don't want to lose you and I understand that you need working phones. With warranty replacements, we mail out a working device in exchange for your device. If there is any physical or liquid damage, regardless of whether that is related to the original issue, we are unable to send a replacement. If we did, you would be charged $299. You still have the option of sending the phone to Samsung directly for warranty repair. Contact them for options 888-987-4357.

For the second phone, did that one have any physical or liquid damage?

I have a Galaxy S3 that is roughly 18 months old. The phone works fine

other than the power button which started acting up recently. Basically it

is ultra sensitive. Just moving the phone, setting it on a table, brushing

your hand over the side of the phone etc. causes the phone to think you're

pressing the power button and either lock itself or flash the shutdown

screen. I did the normal restarts, factory reset etc. with no improvement.

Based on brief searching online this seems like a somewhat common problem

and is likely a hardware/ sensory issue.

If you can provide any assistance I would appreciate it.

Thanks for that information, dschryer. That is very helpful. Can you think of any app installation or anything that may have caused this sudden strange change?

We recommend setting the device to Safe mode and re-test:

1) Power off Device

2) Press Power button Volume Down button at once and hold until you see Samsung logo.

3) Continue to hold Volume Down button and take out your hand from power button

4) Once the device is completely boots up, you will see safe mode text at bottom left corner.

We appreciate you doing all troubleshooting already. Does the button look damaged? If you have warranty on the device, we can get it replaced if there is no damage to the phone.

I am having the same issue, tried restarting, factory reset, cleaning the phone up. Nothing worked. Now when i get so much as a text and the phone vibrates it brings up the power menu. If i set the phone down it locks it. So frustrating, and when i spoke to verizon support they just told me to buy a phone from a third party, upgrade to edge (lose my unlimited data) or try and make the phone i have work. I will be dropping verizon after the issues i have had (customer service is horrible) and going with another carrier, this is the 5th phone i have had with verizon and everytime time i have problems they refuse to help me. I pay too much money to be treated like this and refuse to let it happen. Good luck to those of you who are having issues with your phone, hopefully you figure it out, cause Verizon wont

There is no water damage, and there is no physical damage othat than the paint has started to come off around the back, and the 4g LTE logo is a little worn, thats it. I have added you so that we can direct message.

The only reason I am updating this is so that everyone knows what happened. I tried to private message verizon and they havent accepted the request. I made communication with them friday and have not heard anything back. Looks like they just dont care. Im done with verizon. Seems like they just wanted me to hang on so they could get one more payment out of me.

I'm having this exact same issue. Just started a few weeks back. I have insurance so Verizon mailed me a refurbished Galaxy S3 on Monday of this week. It's Friday and now the replacement phone is starting to do the EXACT SAME THING as the one I just shipped off.

I have the exact same issue. Just brushing my finger up against the power button without actually engaging it sets off the switch. It's definitely a hardware issue because I've tried factory reset and the issue still exists. It's impossible to get into safe mode because holding down the power button doesn't work.

Unfortunately for me, I have two problems: I bought the phone from a third party so Verizon can't do anything and it's also out of warranty so Samsung won't do anything. Time to upgrade... and get away from Samsung's low quality phones.

I am also having an issue with the power button. The phone has no physical or water damage and otherwise works as new. I have attempted a hard reset and confirmed that the issue is hardware related. The phone is outside of the warranty period. I will replace the power button and/or ribbon myself if you can point me in the right direction. Thank you.

Since you're now outside of warranty, I would recommend contacting the manufacturer for button replacement options. Dont expect samsung to do anything without you first paying, and then shipping the phone back and forth, so you will be without a phone for no less than 1 week. Verizon wont do anything either unless your willing to pay for a new phone or get into a new contract. If you have unlimited data and dont want to lose it your best bet is to find someone who can fix the button iteself (i found places for around $60.00) or buy a new phone outright and put it on your plan. I wish verizon had been better with their customers but unfortunately they just dont care about anything but the profit. Good luck to you.

I am having a similar issue. The power button is not sensitive, but when I press the power button, it goes black but then quickly pulls up the lock screen. Also, when coming back from black screen by pressing the power button, it pulls up the shut-down menu that comes up when you hold down the power button while the power is on.

Any help with this as my phone is about 1.5 years old.

I have a Samsung Galaxy 3 phone. This issue started the day I wrote the previous post on March 11th. Prior to the issue occurring, there has been no liquid or physical damage to the part.

For further clarity, the issue that I have been dealing with is as follows.

Coming out of sleep mode, I press the power button once and the screen jumps to life but then brings up the power down menu that comes up when you hold the power button down for an extended period of time.

Also, when I press the power button to go into sleep mode, the screen goes black for a moment, but then jumps back to life with the lock screen appearing.

It would appear that the power button is "sticking" or staying depressed after I let go of the button when pressing it.

I have already performed a factory reset on the device, but there has been no change to the issue I am encountering currently.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Have you recently put a new cover on your phone, maybe a 1 piece cover? I've had my GS3 for 18+ months and not a single issue. Then I purchased a cheap I've piece cover, (Majestic I believe), then maybe a month later I had the same exact issues your having. It was almost unusable for about a month. Then I took the cover off and put the old 2 piece cover back on. It took a couple weeks but I do NOT have any of the issues anymore. I think maybe the squeezing pressure of the 1 piece covers over time puts enough pressure near the power button that it actually causes the button to be hyper-sensitive. It was either that or quite a coincidence.

Yes! Same here..after a few days of no case problem solved. Mine was a hard case from mall..but i saw on some other boards..even verizon cases made the power button too sensitive.
