Employer discount

I signed up for my phone so long ago that I don't even remember an employer discount being part of the plan. I no longer work for the company I worked for then so I am sure I am no longer eligible. I am on some crazy old plan that doesn't even exist anymore that has required me to stay on basic phones. Since my bill is going up anyway, will Verizon allow me to start a new plan and upgrade the two phones on my plan without charging me a termination fee for the old contract? Basically, can I upgrade both of my phones to smart phones and get a new two year contract for a plan with data as if I had reached my upgrade date for both phones? The way I see it, Verizon benefits by getting me onto a more expensive plan.

Yes, you can upgrade both of your phones to smart phones at any time you would like.

If you are currently under contract on any of your lines, you would not be eligible for a discount in exchange for signing a new contract and would therefore have to pay full retail for the line(s) still under contract.

Well I knew I could do that. My point is Verizon has basically altered the terms of my contract by taking away a discount that was apparently agreed to at the start of my two year contract period. In my opinion if a determination was to be made on what discounts I qualify for, it should have been done at the beginning of the contract. Will Verizon at least do me the favor of allowing me to upgrade both phones as if I had reached my upgrade date in a gesture of good will and in light of the fact that I would, in the long run, be giving them more money?

Verizon did not alter the terms of your contract. The customer agreement clearly states:

"Am I Eligible for Special Discounts?

If you're a Postpay customer, you may be eligible for a discount if you are and remain affiliated with an organization that has an agreement with us. Unless your discount is through a government employee discount program, we may share certain information about your Service (including your name, your wireless telephone number and your total monthly charges) with your organization from time to time to make sure you're still eligible. We may adjust or remove your discount according to your organization's agreement with us, and remove your discount if your eligibility ends or your contract term expires. In any case, this won't be considered to have a material adverse effect on you."

As you have already stated, these terms were apparently agreed to at the start of your two year contract period.

If you are currently under contract, it is very doubtful that Verizon will "do you the favor" of allowing you to upgrade at a discount. You will have to wait to get the discount until you have completed your contract.

Yes, but my eligibility didn't end during the course of the contract. I was given a discount at the start of the contract (I was not aware of any discount I was only told how much it would cost to have a phone, I thought it was just the price of my plan) and my status in regard to that discount did not change. If I was never, during the course of the contract, eligible for an employment related discount and it was not presented to me that I was receiving an employment related discount then I don't feel that the discount has anything to do with my employment. Neither of the two qualifying events to remove the discount (eligibility ends or contract term expires) are occurring at this time. Rather someone at Verizon realized they have a bunch of accounts with discounts rolled into the terms of plans that are no longer offered. They decided if they separate the employment related portion of this pricing structure from the main cost of the plan, they can reevaluate these accounts to see if the discount can be removed. It is my position that if I was not eligible for the discount at the start of the term, the onus is on Verizon to remove the discount at that time or to verify my employment. If they fail to do that, the discount is no longer an employment related discount and is just a discount. I am willing to meet them halfway and sign a new contract with no discounts and at a higher cost to me in return for them waiving 11 months worth of upgrade waiting period on a borderline obsolete LG Cosmos 2. I think that is a reasonable request and it is in Verizon's best interest to do that in order to keep a long time customer satisfied. I was hoping to get a response from the Verizon Customer Service account. If they do not think the request is reasonable the can do the same as you and quote the contract back to me. I will pay my new un-discounted rate for the remainder of this contract and reevaluate my choice of service provider when it expires. Verizon has the opportunity to guarantee I remain a customer. I would like to think that has value to them.
