If I change my device to a friend's old one, is there a charge?

Basically, a friend of mine recently got a new phone, the Galaxy S5, to replace his old Droid Razr MAXX HD, and has offered me the MAXX HD to use in place of my Droid Razr M.  I'm unsure of whether or not I can do this, as I am only a year into my 2 year contract.  Would there be any charges related to switching devices like this, since I am not buying a new phone?

No charges or changes to your plan. You should be able to take the SIM card from your current phone and install it in the "new" phone.
