Throttling 4G LTE

Verizon throttling 4G LTE users that are only on Unlimited Grandfathered plans is completely (removed). This is obviously just about greed and a money grab. Especially when Verizon is saying that the top 5% of users are using about 5GB of data will be effected but Verizon sales data plans that people can sign up for and they can use over 10GB of data.

I know there are people on the "More" plan that use more data than me and I'm on an old Unlimited plan still but I'll be throttled and they won't. Since this will be a breach of contract by Verizon I hope to use this to leave Verizon finally for good. Cricket or Straight Talk will be where I land for now. Can't wait to use a GSM phone.

You're wrong of course. Not sure how this is a money grab when unlimited data users aren't charged anything for going over 5 GB. There isn't a "throttling" charge. If Verizon really want to have a money grab they kill off unlimited data and force those people get get tiered data plans.

By the way At&t, Sprint and T-Mobile ALL have pretty much the same throttling policy with their unlimited data customers.

Sprint and T-Mobile still have truly Unlimited data. No cap. Check it out, it's common knowledge. Of course Sprint's network is very limited in most areas and T-Mobile is only in major cities.

If this new throttling isn't geared towards punishing Unlimited Data users why are they the only ones being targeted? It's very simple what they are doing. They're plan is to make staying on Unlimited Data pointless. If they slow your speed down to 3G or more than likely Edge to the point it's unusable they are hoping those users will move to the more expensive More Everything plans.

Right now I have Unlimited Data on 2 lines. $29.99 per line plus $9.99 a line access fee. What does Verizon charge per line access fee right now? $40 per line. Then take on the price for data. I'm a heavy user since I stream music and use my phone for navigation. I have 3 emails accounts. So add $80 for data. That's $160 before taxes and surcharges. Going to be way more that the $153 a month I pay now.

I guess if you are narrow minded and don't look at the big picture then this isn't an attempt at a money grab. Even the FCC chairman sees this for what it is.

Sprint and T-Mobile DO NOT have "truly Unlimited" data. There ARE restrictions which can lead to your account being cancelled.

From Sprint

"Usage Limitations: Other plans may receive prioritized bandwidth availability. Streaming video speeds may be limited to 1 Mbps. Sprint may terminate service if off-network roaming usage in a month exceeds: (1) 800 min. or a majority of min.; or (2) 100 MB or a majority of KB." 100 MB in an unlimited plan IS NOT a large number.

From T-Mobile

"Full speeds available up to monthly allotment; then slowed to up to 2G speeds for rest of billing cycle. Roaming and on-network data allotments differ; 1 GB full-speed plan includes 10 MB roaming; 3 GB and Unlimited 4G full-speed plans and 5 GB limited Smartphone Mobile Hotspot feature include 50 MB roaming; 5 GB full-speed plan includes 100 MB roaming. " 50 MB in an unlimited plan IS NOT a large number.

That's not the truly unlimited plan at T-Mobile. T-Mobile has the mutiple types of "Unlimited" Plans. But one is truly unlimited.

You don't read the fine print. BOTH of them have "network management" option that they employ on unlimited data users. FACT

Hmmm sounds an awful lot like what Verizon wants to do.

Verizon sold a product and now they want to back out. They are NOT throttling users because of usage the ARE throttling users because they don't pay them $750/month. Verizon will gladly step aside and let you stomp on other users at 100 gig per month it you will pay them.

I encourage all unlimited data users to file an FCC complaint. The more complaints the more the FCC will have to address it.

I just filed. I am one of the 5% I use from 100 to 150 gigs a month. BUT I PAY FOR THAT BUY BUYING A PHONE AT FULL PRICE! When I'm sleeping my internet speeds on my hotspot are amazing!!!!!!!! But when I get up I'm throttled to 35 kb/s down and 1000 kb/s up, I can upload my ass off but I just want to watch Netflix! It's a dick move, at least drop me down to a speed I can stream with. like 300 kb/s so I don't notice you're throttling me. Yeah I know it's about the $$$$$$$ well I'm never going to switch to a family plan!

I remember when I had unlimited...sigh. My agreement stated that any abnormal use such as higher than average use compared to other unlimited data customers, or any tethering that was detected were examples of why my service could be terminated without notice. Also, I was month to month and therefore not under contract. I guess Verizon wasn't thinking 4G when they stated unlimited data/3G.

You are in more like the one-half of 1% top group. And do you have proof of throttling vs. tower congestion? If just a couple people around you do the same thing you do, the tower will be overburdened and slow everyone down.

You use 10 to 15 times more data than the average More Everything family plan. No one is going to feel sorry for someone who is the worst case of abuse of the unlimited plan, and admits it.

I am also in the boat of them throttling me. My download speeds are still great, but my upload speed has been pushed down to 1 mbps for the last week or two. What exactly do I have to do to get my upload speed back up to at least 5mbps?

Verizon does not throttle. Used to be the top 5% were "optimized" but that was long ago and usually both up and down speeds were slowed for a period of time.

That sounds odd that your download speeds are still "great" but upload speeds are slowed. That doesn't sound like a "throttling" issue to me. Sounds like you may have a device issue. Try clearing out your cache and stopping any unnecessary apps running in the background, etc. Power down your device and then turn it back on after a minute. Hope that helps.

Let's rephrase that. Verizon "used" to not throttle. I've have tested this on all my devices. I have one with unlimited data and two iPhones without unlimited. All my devices on my account are being throttled, mainly just the upload speed.

Trust me, I'm a tech guy. I have tried everything under the sun and experimented with all sorts of scenarios. At the end of the day, all devices on my account are being throttled.

Here is an output I did from the Speedtest.net app on my iPhone, which does not have unlimited data on it. As you can see, the upload speeds were great from tests I did last year and early this year. The tests recently are on par in regards to download speed, but as you can see, the upload speeds are horrid.

That does look weird, especially how it shows bad upload speed on the 29th of July, then it goes up somewhat on the 31st. I'd be interested to know the date your billing cycle begins to know when your service resets and wouldn't be subject to any throttling. I see on the 3rd and 7th that your upload speed was "somewhat ok" but then slowed significantly on the 9th. That's a very short period to notice any throttling unless you have done an amazing amount of data uploading, etc. The fact that it is happening on several devices does indeed show that it's not a device problem. I just have never seen upload speeds throttled and not download speeds too. I'm also a tech guy and this one is quite a curious issue.

IF the server were the same, it could be chalked up to a network or phone problem. But the change in location makes me suspect towers may be another variable.

I'm about 30 miles east of Columbis, OH and over the past couple of weeks I have noticed a significant drop in upload speed. My download speed seems normal, but uploading has dropped about 98% from 1mbps to 20kpbs. I am a photographer and I upload my work via my Verizon Wireless connection and now it is terribly slow all of a sudden. I can't understand why this would happen, most customers are downloading not uploading and Verizon is getting paid both ways unless the people have unlimited service. Very strange.

Please submit a ticket with Verizon through Twitter (@vzwsuport) or by calling them. Everyone needs to post there results from Speedtest.net so they can see that everyone with XLTE or LTE is seeing horrible upload speeds. Maybe we will actually get there attention this way. I submited a ticket and my response from the tech was that coverage is better outdoors than indoors. Yes, this is really what they told me. Come on Verizon. I've attached my most recent Speedtest results as of 8/16.

Can anyone that was experiencing poor upload speeds please test again. My upload speed as of today was 10 Mbps, which is more typical for what I was getting before the slow down.

My upload speed looks back to normal. Speed test reads 10mbps, but as a

practical test I got 1.5mps on an uploads of a 100+ mb file. On Sunday I

know I was stuck at 20kbps, so a seriously shocking difference. Something

must have been wrong and got fixed. Amazing.

Mine was only 7.7GB and the throttle begins for the last 5 days of my cycle. I've called VZ but they denied it completely saying we don't throttle. Magically happens that today is my 1st day of the new cycle and the speeds is back to normal, if this is not throttling, then what is it? A big coincident?

IF you are on Postpaid Verizon service, Verizon doesn't because it can't. Not for any customers, ever.
