disable text messaging while traveling?

I'm currently in the Bahamas. I want to disable everything (text messages, etc) except voice service. I don't want to pay the outrageous fees for text messages I'll be receiving. I only want people to be able to reach me via voice call. How can I do this? I can't seem to reach any Verizon phone number from my hotel in the Bahamas. Please assist.

Here I am to save the day! I can help with text messaging while in the Bahamas. May I ask what model device do you have? Since text messages travel over the voice network, voice roaming, if applicable, would need to be turned off. If you have an Apple device then you can go to Settings > Cellular > Roaming > Voice Roaming > Off. Keep in mind that this will diasble voice calling as well as they are interconnected. If you have a different model device then please share the model so we can provide the steps.
