I would like upgrade my phone, then switch back to my old phone and give the new phone to someone else. Can I do this?

I would like to use my available upgrade to get someone else a phone.

I figure I can upgrade my phone, when the new phone comes in activate it, then switch back to my old phone (which should free up the new phone) and give it to someone else to activate.

Is that the best way to do this? or can I transfer and upgrade from one account to another?

If the 2 lines are on the same account all these steps are not necessary. If they are 2 different accounts these steps are necessary but there are some things you should know.

If a device is purchased by you and you activate it then give it to a friend and s/he activates on a separate account the NEED to have insurance ($10 per month) prior to this happening. Why? Because once it is transferred from your account to theirs it loses the warranty. Why can't they get insurance after you give it to them? Technically the phone is considered Customer Provided Equipment and it will this type of equipment is used at the customer's own risk. However, if insurance is already on the line it should be fine. Your line will also be in a 2 year contract which means you yourself won't be able to get an upgrade.
