Porting numbers to prepaid Verizon phone from Verizon

I just bought a Verizon prepaid Samsung Gusto phone and tried to activate it and it said that my Verizon number (I have an account with Verizon for 2 + years), I called and support said that they couldn't and they connected me to another Verizon group which said that they couldn't so I went to the local Verizon corporate store and they said I needed to get a new number since they cannot port my existing Verizon number. But when I check the Verizon site it states that I can port a number into a Verizon prepaid phone. I found online where I can port from outside Verizon than why not within? I want to keep my number for the same reasons Verizon says in their PR for keeping your existing number.

You need to call the prepaid customer service line to get the right department for switching the number from a postpaid to prepaid account.

No you can't port it. Because the same company still owns the number and prepaid accounts/phones are not compatible with contract accounts/phones.

To keep your number you will have to port it out to another company then port it back in to Verizon prepaid. Verizon doesn't have a way to move it internally.

If you want to keep that number do not cancel your contact line. If you cancel it before porting it you will lose it.

I stand corrected. I have found out that Verizon can port your number to prepaid as long as you kept the other line active.
