Since the Galaxy S5 update the power saving and ultra power saving options have been poor. My battery is dying quicker. What did this update do to these great options?
If this update is already on your phone doing a hard/factory reset will not remove the update. You will put your phone back to factory condition except that it will have the new update. A factory reset could correct your problem with the battery.
I also had the same issues - downloaded the update and immediately my battery wouldn't hold a charge. The phone also got extremely hot. Called Verizon and they went through the motions of them trouble shooting. They finally sent me a reconditioned phone since mine was still under warranty. Now the new phone wants to download the KitKat update and I just keep putting it off.
Glad to know it wasn't just my issue and this is happening to others.
Yeah, I just did the update 2 days ago. I've had the phone on the UPS mode and the battery has gone down over 10% in less than an hour. It's unacceptable from what it was.
Ok, to add to this, terrible update. Since I've had my phone in the UItra Power Saving Mode, my phone has been running none stop scans. Why i don't know, my scans are scheduled for Mondays. I'm pretty sure that today is Tuesday. Honestly what the hell happened with this update??? Can someone answer that???
Verizon Wireless Customer Support have you had any other complaints about this update like this or am I the only one?
Scoob2215,I am sorry to hear that you are having issues with your battery dying quickly. What types of things are you using your phone for? Do you have the most recent software version on your phone? http://vz.to/1uo5EN1StevenR_VZWFollow us on Twitter at @VZWSupport
Yes, I just had the most recent update. As of 2 days ago when I was asked to update the phone. I am doing the usual activites of texting, little game and little internet. However, before this update I did the same things with the regular power saving mode, and the phone lasted all day, now its not last even 1/2 the day. And now with the Ultra Power Saving mode on, the battery dies even faster: one because for god foresaken reason the anti virus is scanning all the time and the other reason is I don't know. This update did something with these options that killed two of the aspects that made this phone great.
I am so disappointed. This update has destroyed my phone. The battery lasts for about 3 - 4 hours, and that's with me not even using it while I am at work with the network shut down to prevent it from looking for signal. It also now takes FOREVER to charge. I was in love with the fact that this phone charged so quickly.
So disappointing....
I agree with you 100%. You can shut off the WiFi and Mobile Data and it still dies way too fast and easy.
Hi scoob2215!Thanks for clarifying, we'll get this figured out! Since the update have you had an opportunity to complete a factory reset? Have you recently downloaded any new applications?Thanks,AyaniB_VZWFollow us on Twitter @VZWSupport
I have the same problem, and I think it is related to the network. When I move around, the phone heats up like it is working extra hard to find the next network connection. I tried to look at Battery, and I see that Android System is using up 37% and Google Services are using up 13%, with only 3% Device Idle and 3% cell standby. That seems like a lot for Android system. I stopped Cloud and uninstalled Xfinity, each of which were using 7%. I don't use Verizon Cloud and I can do without finding Xfinity hotspots which don't work very well anyway. But I still have this increased battery drain problem especially when I move around and am switching between WiFi and 4G and 3G.
I have not added any new apps. I was trying to avoid a hard/factory reset. If I do a reset I am NOT downloading or okaying this update until I am forced to
I haven't downloaded any new apps, in fact I just deleted a bunch thinking maybe clearing some memory would help, as my phone also has a serious lag now. I don't want to hard reset unless I know it's going to fix any of these issues.
Sitting at work, my phone was just at 10%. I waited 2 minutes and it was completely dead.
However, I will say I also noticed my phone was really hot yesterday afternoon. I took the Otter case off and it cooled down a bit. I haven't had my phone get warm like that since I have had it and I keep it in the Otter case, so I don't think the case had anything to do with it.
The issue seems to be with the camera running in the background constantly. It's using 65%+ of my battery and heating my phone. Google mm-qcamera-daemon and you'll see that lots of people have had this issue with this particular version of Android. Supposedly there was a fix coming but nothing yet. Restarting the phone doesn't kill the app, either.
I looked on my phone it's not there. The cloud is the highest at 34%.
My phone is having similar problems
My battery is always hot and often has to enter cool down mode, it take longer to charge, it doesn't hold the charge for as long, it's sluggish to do just about anything.
My phone used to be awesome! It's quickly becoming has horrible as my RAZR was. I shouldn't be shelling out an additional $30 a month for a new phone that is no longer better than the old one.
Verizon: Please figure this out and release a new update soon!
If the camera server daemon is stuck running you have no real choice but to factory reset. This will most certainly fix that problem. Unless you're rooted and can get to some of the protected system files... then that works.
I'm glad I read this. I am having the same issues since the last install. Please find a solution asap. I hardly used my phone and by 10:00 this morning and I was already down to 65%. It's 5pm now and my phone just died. I used to go two days before having to charge my phone. The awesome battery was part of the reason I bought it. In addition, my screens are freezing up. Text messaging is locking up, I'll type and nothing happens. The phone automatically resets itself to the password screen to get back in again. Incredibly disapointed with the last install and loved my phone before, I raved about it to all that asked. Right now I wouldn't advise the purchase.
My Galaxy S3 started working much better a few weeks ago. I assume that Verizon released some sort of update.
My phone just started this issue today. Will not charge. Charger incompatible issue. Sigh. it was working fine. Why upgrade my phone and cause it to fail?
jcoon,Thanks for contacting us. We know how important battery life can be these days. It sounds like something on your phone may not be agreeing with the software update. I would test the device in safe mode for a bit and see if there's any improvement; http://vz.to/1B5LU1C . You may eventually need to attempt a hard reset as well; http://vz.to/1yGhlN2Let us know if it improves! TrevorC_VZW Follow us on Twitter @VZWSupport
Partmonster,I'm sorry to hear your having these issues as well. I would test the device in safe mode and see if there's any improvements! http://vz.to/1B5LU1C Let us know!TrevorC_VZW Follow us on Twitter @VZWSupport
I have this issue too! S5 fine until update the other night. Now battery drains fast and phone gets hot. "Android system" always at the top of battery usage. I have Google+ disabled so I can't blame that guy.
How can I get back to the old software until this issue gets worked out? Clearly a number of people are having it.
Thanks
MojoPotatoI definitely want to get this fixed for you as well! Did you test your phone in Safe Mode http://vz.to/1tTEBta ? Did you see any difference in your draining? If you did not see a difference, can you try the Hard Reset http://vz.to/1tTENZl and let us know if you see a difference there. I would recommend backing up your information before processing the Hard Reset. Verizon Cloud is a great way to do this http://vz.to/1qxj1HQSandyS_VZWFollow us on Twitter @VZWSupport
I am in the same situation as jcoon - I loved my phone until this latest install - now my calendar won't update, emails take forever to load, the battery is draining much faster (and I am using the phone less than I was before.)
Verizon Wireless Admin This needs to be fixed - the answer can't be for all of us to do a hard factory reset - that is completely unacceptable.
Immediately after the update I started noticing significant lag and crashes. I didn't notice the battery issue right away because I try to keep it plugged in most time at work. However, it became really obvious one I had a couple of days off.
I also notice the phone getting hot in my pocket sometimes. I sure wish I could go back to the previous OS.
Yep everyone I know says the same thing except Verizon Wireless. They say this is not a problem. They even convinced me to buy a battery for my phone to fix the issues. I'm so upset, an update ruined a phone I loved and overnight I hate it! The alarm clock won't work on silent making me late for work. The camera shutter sound cant be shut off and my battery lasts about 2 hours. I regret buying the s5 the day the iPhone 6 came out but I guess this is what you get for loyalty. ...not that Verizon has only gotten $200 a month from me for 5 years.... $12,000 so I guess they have enough business from me and it's time to move on
Verizon says you are lying , there is no issue with battery life
I have been experiencing terrible battery drainage ever since the first Lollipop update. I've just done the second Verizon update that rolled out in late March, but it hasn't fixed the problem. I tried wiping the cache partition, but that didn't help. I've already spoken to a Samsung representative, and she strongly encouraged me NOT to do a factory reset, but to back up my personal data on my computer and take my phone to a Samsung service center to have them "reflash" my software. She also informed me that this battery drainage is strictly a Verizon issue, and that people with Galaxy S5s on other carriers have not been experiencing issues. Verizon IS the problem. I'm lucky that my phone is still under the 1 year manufacturer warranty so that Samsung can still help me without charging a fee, but what about when I'm no longer under that warranty? I pay over $80 to Verizon every month for service that I can barely use now because the update has caused such horrible battery drainage issues. I used to love my phone and now I'm constantly stressed about battery drainage. If I continued to use my phone like I used it before the latest Verizon update, it would be dead in a few hours. Verizon needs to get their IT people to fix this problem.
If I bring this issue to a Verizon store, would they offer me a replacement phone? And if so, wouldn't it have the same issues if I were to download the latest software update, anyway?
This response was not helpful at all. I can follow the instructions to restart my phone in Safe Mode easily enough, but I have no idea what to do from there. The instructions as to how to discover which (if any) app(s) may be causing issues are vague. After restarting it in Safe Mode, I brought it to a Verizon store. The guy there took a look at it and didn't seem to find anything (he didn't show me what he did, he just looked at it himself). Then he explained to me that it is normal for a battery to start having drainage issues after a year. That I can understand, but these drainage issues came on all of a sudden; it was not gradual.
I have spoken to a Samsung customer service rep over the phone, I have visited a Verizon store in person, and I have visited a Samsung service center in person. Because it is a Samsung product with Verizon service, I'm not sure which people I should be taking advice from (Verizon or Samsung). Samsung ended up giving me a new phone battery, because I've had the phone for almost a year and they suspected that the battery was the main issue. I'm not sure WHAT to think. I miss the days when I could use my phone constantly throughout the day and never had to worry about my battery dying. Now it's all I ever think about. :[
I wish there was an advanced workshop for getting to know the inner workings of the phone. It's frustrating going from message board to message board trying to piece together an action plan to fix my phone issues. In addition, it's frustrating to rely on bits and pieces of advice from super quick visits with customer service representatives (whether from Verizon or Samsung).
Hello,
I am very unhappy with how the latest software update has affected my
battery life, and phone in general. I have scoured multiple forums on this
issue (which MANY of us Galaxy S5 users seem to share) and there are so
many different suggestions for resolution, it's hard to know what to try.
Essentially we are all waiting for the Google technicians to get their
asses in gear and come out with a patch. Many of us wish we could go back
to KitKat but I have been told it is not an option to revert back to the
old operating system. Besides the main problem with the battery drain and
overall sluggishness, there were many changes made to the interface that
are counter-intuitive. This latest 5.0 Lollipop update has been a whopping
failure.
I visited a Verizon store today and was essentially told by the rep that
the battery drainage issues I'm experiencing are normal, and I felt like he
just wanted to rush me out of there. I asked if I could send my phone in
for a replacement, and he told me that there was nothing wrong with the
phone and that I would be charged the full retail amount for a replacement.
I feel I am entitled for a Verizon rep to REALLY take the time to sit down
with me, take a GOOD LOOK at my phone, show me and explain to me what they
are looking at/doing and why. Luckily I am currently living in Los Angeles
and was able to visit the Samsung Service Center at 3150 Wilshire Blvd
today and they gave me a new battery. Since I now have a new battery for my
Galaxy S5, I can KNOW with certainty that my battery issues are not because
of the age of the battery. This pretty much convinces me that the problem
is with the OS.
Is there a way that I can schedule an appointment at a Verizon store where
a representative will TRULY sit down with me and take the time to go
through all the details and give me suggestions as to how to deal with my
current issues? I feel like this sort of service should be available to me
as I pay more than $80 per month to Verizon for services that I can barely
use with my device, at the moment.
What can Verizon offer me as far as addressing my issues? I do not feel
equipped to deal with these issues on my own, and I feel a little education
is warranted. It does not seem fair that I have to pay for services that my
device can not support like it ought to.
I look forward to a well-thought out response.
Thank you,
Ilene

Well, over the past week I have tried multiple things to improve battery life, but it always comes back to the same thing. It's not anything that I am doing, it's the fact that for some reason the Lollipop OS is CONSTANTLY using most of my RAM. There are so many things that are constantly running in the background, I just don't understand it. While my phone is at rest, the battery seems to do ok, but the SECOND I start using it, the battery drains horribly. When text messaging, it will drain about 1% every 60 seconds I have the app open. Do the math, that means I'm only getting about 100 minutes of real usage out of my phone. I am so pissed about this. I am paying Verizon a lot of money every month for services I can't make full use of. And forget about playing games. Why am I going to play games on my phone if it eats up 10% of my battery in 10 minutes?
Verizon Wireless Customer Support, you claim you want me to continue to love my phone, but there is nothing you can do to put it back to the way it was. I have tried running it in Safe Mode, I have tried uninstalling all the 3rd party apps to see if that made a difference, I have done a Factory Data Reset...and by the way, I made sure to sync all of my contacts to the Cloud before I did the FDR, and it did not save all of my contacts. It RANDOMLY lost a few, so I can't even fully trust your software to do what it's supposed to do. I feel at this point the only way you could make me happy again is to figure out a way to allow me to downgrade back to the old KitKat OS. I've been told left and right that that is simply not possible. Well that's a load of BS! You guys SUCK!!!!
I just checked my Battery consumption graph, and it shows that the Android OS accounts for 40% of my battery consumption. Just RIDICULOUS.
This update has ruined my phone. Battery power is gone twice as fast. Phone gets hot. Freezes. Reboots. Had to even take the battery out to get the phone to quite rebooting. I want this update off my phone!
My phone is still not working very well. I did a factory reset. It still just reboots at random times and gets hot if I play a game or use it very much. I quit using it when it starts to get hot and let it cool off. I've experimented with turning things off and it's not as bad as it was but my opinion is that update ruined a very good phone and software. It was not happening prior to the update and I was very happy with the phone and service. I am not now.
Sent from my Verizon Wireless 4G LTE smartphone
I'm having problems too. I absolutely hate everything about the latest update. My battery doesn't last half the day now, and I'm unhappy with the other changes too. When my screen is locked the upper left corner used to show if I had emails, missed calls, or text msgs. Now it just says "Verizon Wireless". I know that I have Verizon; I don't need to be told. Other problems are: my number keypad is much smaller during a call, copying and pasting text is more difficult now, I don't like the larger bars when I look at the apps I have open, my internet won't open to the last page I was on anymore, and I don't like that I can't see how many tabs I have open in Chrome. I have tried and tried to change things back to the way they were, but I haven't been able to find any way to get my phone back the way I want. Basically, like I said before, I hate everything about the new update. I would uninstall it, but I don't have the option. Please get rid of this mess! I'm very unhappy!
I agree. Phone overheats and then shuts down, battery life is NOTHING compared to what it was, calls get dropped constantly, continually being bounced out of apps, being bounced back to home screen, takes FOREVER to charge now, etc. I used to love this phone. Now I'd like to run it over. Two or three times. I wish I could go back to Kit Kat. BTW, I have already done a factory reset and it hasn't helped. Thanks for this absolute crap update. I always swore I wouldn't by an "i" product, but I'm seriously considering it now.
Count me in as a victim of what ever change has been recently pushed to the Galaxy S5. Both my wife and I have the S5. In recent days we have seen our phones drain in a matter of hours in not minutes. i see the app mm-qcamera-daemon taking most of the battery. We are running stock applications. An internet search shows that the mm-qcamera-daemon is a well known and common problem for which there seems to be no answer. Where do we stand on this? I travel frequently for work and find a $600 dollar 3-hour phone unacceptable...
No third party apps that might be using the camera? Skype? Another camera app? Lookout security?
FWIW: I came across this:
MM-qcamera-Daemon bug on S5 lolipop | Android Forums
Scroll all the way to the bottom. I'm not sure if by Firmware which the poster was referring to, this is low-level stuff below the Android OS.
Currently running stock apps, Stef7. I will look at the link you provided. Thanks.
The camera issue is still on-going somewhat and no lasting fix has been released to date ,even with 5.0 release version 2 . Samsung was doing a re-flash for a short time but this has now been stopped. Battery run times are very poor with this app running. see time chart:
Battery and Use Run Times, what's your best? in Android
I don't use anything that needs a camera on a regular basis. Is there any way I can just remove the upgrade? I'm really unhappy with it.
I've had a similar issue with my galaxy S5. I don't know if my problem is linked to the Android OS update, however it is possible. Over the last couple weeks my battery had drained very quickly each day. I turned on the battery saving option, and still it would be at 60% after work when I barely used the phone throughout the day. This wasn't happening a month ago, and the phone is only 3 months old. I did a test yesterday; I turned off WiFi and network data, I was not roaming, I closed all apps, and I set my phone down for two hours without touching it. The battery level of my phone dropped 30% in two hours while in standby mode! I think this is a defect because the standby batter time is listed as 100+ hours. I've also been using a reduced screen brightness, and my phone feels warm/hot even when I haven't been using it. Since I cannot e-mail Verizon customer service, I hope they will respond to this and offer a solution since my phone is only 3 months old.
Can you take a screen shot of what's using your batter?
Settings>Battery
You'll have needed to freshly charged it, used it as normal, and let the battery drop to 50% or less before taking a photo or at least relaying what you see on the screen to us.
Hi MiiHere. I did this yesterday and I think it answers my question; the Android OS took up majority of the battery life and left it around 60% in the first 3 hours. I plan on doing a factory reboot on the phone and leaving it at the default OS until a new update is available, unless you have any other suggestions? Thank - FLD
While I think a factory reset will help, I'm going to burst your bubble. It wont revert the OS back to kitkat. BUT it should still help. I'm going to monitor mine and see how much my OS uses as well.
periodically power cycle the device
