IPhone 4S Password Lockout

After installing the IOS 7.1.2 update, my son changed the 4-digit device password to his iPhone 4S, forgot it, and kept getting longer and longer lockout times. It's now up to an hour. How can we reset it without doing a hard reset to the device and losing info currently on it?
