How do clear the voice mail notification icon? I don't have any new voice mails.
Call yourself from another phone and leave a short message. Then on your phone call voicemail and delete the message you just left. It should clear the notification icon.
Having the same issue since I changed over the Free Visual Voicemail option last week. I have no new messages, no saved messages, no messages saved to internal storage, no messages period, yet the Voice Mail icon persists on the Notification Panel. I just called my cell from my work land line, left a message, and a second Voice Mail Icon appeared, next the one that won't go away. I deleted that message and the associated VM Icon went away, but the other Icon still remains. I've turned the phone off several times, and checked for system updates, but nothing seems to work.
After trying some of the other suggestions that did not solve my problem, I just went into the Phone App and hit Force Stop. The Voice Mail icon disappeared, finally.
I did both of the things suggested, and my voicemail icon still will not go away.

I am having this same problem. Very frustrated too, cannot get rid of the voice mail icon.
Once you call your Voice mail clear any messages and exit the system it should disappear try power cycling your phone as well or try Going into you Voice Mail in settings and clear the cache and if needed the Data..
And two weeks later (9/16/14), the annoying VM icon has returned. And stopping the VM App didn't work to clear the icon this time around.
I'm having the same problem. I have no voice mail messages and yet the icon is displayed continuously. This happened when I updated to the latest OS. Do we have to wait for the next release to get this fixed?
