Everytime I reboot my phone (Galaxy S5) it says VZWAVSSERVICE has closed.
What is this service and is it needed?
Strange that Verizon Wireless Support doesn't know about it, it's all over the Internet. Just go to the application manager, find Google+, then clear the data and the cache. Also, find VZwavsservIce and disable it. These worked for me, with no bad side effects. I've no idea what vzwavsservice does.
It started happening on my S5 when I updated Google+. I had to uninstall its updates (since I couldn't uninstall it completely)
Farmetb Understanding how your phone functions is crucial. We need more information as Android devices have several Verizon programs that arenecessary for your phone to work properly. There are also many preinstalled apps and services on Android devices. When do you see this message appear on your screen? Please share more details. SheritaH_vzwFollow us on Twitter@VZWSupport
Sherita,
The error appears after installing the latest Google + update. Tested by uninstalling the update - rebooting the phone, the error is gone. As soon as the G+ update installs, the error pops up, (no reboot - it just appears as soon as the update installs). And it reappears each time the phone is restarted.
It doesn't appear to be device specific; it is happening on the LG G3, The S5, the S4, and possibly others,, but these models I know of, at least.
SheritaH_vzw: It is equally important the VZW reps that respond in these forums understand the purpose of the apps and services that Verizon adds to its Android phones.
VZW recently pushed an Android 4.4.2 update to the Samsung Galaxy S5, and Google released an update to Google+ on 12 August. Ever since the Google+ update, VZWAVSService crashes shortly after the phone reboots. The scenario is easily replicated.
I have the same problem with my S5. Thank you for clarifying it for customer service.
I too am having the same problem on my Samsung GS3 every time I reboot my phone I get the message "vzwavsservice has stopped." But it is not linked to my G+ app that I've noticed. Just on boot up when I power on my phone after dead battery, turning it off, or battery pull. Researching now to what app does, came here first under a google search, will continue search to make sure it is safe to force stop and turn off.
iif you break the name down, it would seem to be verizon wireless anti virus software (or possibly scan) service.
ive googled and come up short.
is it possible it is connected to the verizon protection application? I have that disabled on my LG G2 and have never seen this.
hope you find the basis for the message and the app/process/service purpose.
I feel this needs to be addresses ASAP. My S5 started doing this after the last update pushed out by Verizon.
I can understand it's pretty annoying to get that message, zombielove69. This message has been popping up on multiple make and model devices since an automatic update to the Google application through the Play Store (even if you don't necessarily use the application). But good news! There's a way to uninstall the update and customers have reported the error message has stopped. To uninstall updates for the Google application, go to Settings > Manage Applications > All > Google > Uninstall Updates and then power cycle the device. At this time, the best way to prevent this error after uninstalling updates to Google is to disable Automatic Updates in the google play store by selecting Menu > Settings > Auto Update Apps > Do not Auto-Update Apps. It's useless bloatware by Verizon, go into application manager and disable it. I never saw that again after doing this.
Can't disable on s5.
Sure you can. In the application manager, select "all" at the top and scroll down till you find it. Click on it and then click on "disable".
I disabled the service. It's had no effect on my phone.
Application Vulnerability Scanning Service is what it is VZWavService.... VZW meaning the Verizon Wireless ... av meaning the application vulnerability scanning service.. I like most of you went into my Google plus and uninstalled the updates and cleared the cache then rebooted and it went away. Verizon needs to address this problem. I see about the rooting etc, I only wish I knew how to do that without messing something up and I would. But then again my warranty/insurance would be no good
Great, thanks for the answer. That explains why i have not been seeing the
downloads scanned lately.
Did it also appear to drain the life out of your battery? I've had the battery issue when the notice started showing up!
No impact on my battery. Works great.
I've had this same issue, so I today uninstalled the update (Settings/Device/Applications/Application Manager/Google+/Uninstall Updates)
then restarted the s5. Before pressing uninstall, I was warned that this would be a factory reset (or could cancel the uninstall).
Then got the error again!
So I did what the Verizon rep on this thread, among others, said to do but it's not fixed.
I do note that via Notifications that "Google+ and My Verizon Mobile" were updated, after the restart. But I don't know if that means g+ was reset to factory specs or if it automatically updated and re-installed the problem update.
A little more help, Verizon, please?
I don't agree with VZW on the fix. They seem reluctant to reveal the functions of vzwavsservice, but it is apparently a VZW hack to Android. I stand by my earlier post recommending that vzwavsservice just be disabled. If it's an application that scans apps for security, as was hypothesized, I suggest installing a tried and true app like AVG which has been around for years across several platforms.
I disabled vzwavsservice two days ago without having to uninstall the Google+ updates, and my S5 is working fine. Thus I'm keeping any bug fixes or security patches that are in the update.
Hi, Began Getting Prompt Upon Turning On my Galaxy S5 AFTER VZW Software Update AND AFTER VZW PROTECT PREMIUM APP UPDATE!
(ASURION INSURANCE)
Called Tech Support (Asurion) and was told Problem was from GOOGLE÷ Update.
RESTORED GOOGLE+ TO FACTORY DEFAULT AND PREVENTS ANY UPDATES.
DID NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM!!!
ONE WOULD THINK THAT TECH WOULD KNOW IF PROBLEM WAS FROM THEIR NEW APP!
SO FAR HAVE NOT NOTICED ANY CHANGE IN PER FORMANCE OF MY GS5.
JUST HOPE THERE'S NO MALWARE!
THE VZW PROTECT APP WAS COMPLETELY
REVAMPED! DIFFERENT TO BE CONNECTED TO A VZW SUPPORT TECH-ALWAYS GET ASURION SUPPORT TECH. YET THEY HAVE NO SOLUTION TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM.
This occurred before the VZW Protect update.

I agree @wordltraveler58, why can't Verizon simply answer the question. What is this service and what does it do? It's pretty straightforward.
My Galaxy S5 is only 2 weeks old and it began displaying the message ."vzwavservice has stopped working", like everyone else's, since the last update. I feel Verizon should have tested the update before launch and pre-emuted such problems as this. So what are they waiting for? The next update to compound the problem?
Can you tell me how you found the vzwavservice on the galaxy S5? I cannot find it in my applications and want to disable it. I do not want to roll back Google at this point.
Any specifics would be appreciated as it isn't showing up in my application list.
I would really like to know what this service does!
THE PROMPT, "UNFORTUNATELY, THE VZWAVSService HAS STOPPED." OCCURRED AFTER THE VZW PROTECT PREMIUM APP UPGRADE! (COMPLETELY NEW LOOK AND FUNCTION) AND AFTER THE VZW SOFTWARE UPDATE FOR 3 APPS.
THE ASURION SUPPORT TECH WHOSE COMPANY IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE VZW PROTECT APP DID NOT KNOW WHAT THE VZWAVSService's FUNCTION IS.
IT IS MUCH HARDER TO REACH A VZW TECH SUPPORT NOW REGARDLESS IF YOU CALL VZW'S TOLL FREE NUMBER AND ENTER OPTION 3, TECH SUPPORT.
AS I MENTIONED IN MY FIRST MESSAGE, I HAVE NOT NOTICED ANY CHANGES THUS FAR IN THE OPERATION OG MY GALAXY S5 EXCEPT FOR THIS PROMPT EVERY TIME I TURN ON MY PHONE.
I DID GO TO APPLICATIONS MANAGER AND RETURN GOOGLE+ BACK TO DEFAULT SETTINGS AND CHECKED BOX NOT TO ACCEPT ANY UPDATES FOR GOOGLE+. (I HAVE YET TO USE GOOGLE+) BUT WHAT IF I WANT TO JOIN GOOGLE+ AND USE THE APP??? SOMEONE FROM THE COMPANY WHO DEVELOPED THE VZW TOTAL PROTECT PREMIUM AND FREE APPS SHOULD BE ABLE TO ANSWER WHAT VZWAVSService IS/DOES AND HAVE THE FIX TO REMEDY THE PROBLEM.
THAT WOULD BE ASURION INSURANCE WHO HAS THEIR OWN SUPPORT TECHS.
I PAY $10 PER MONTH FOR THEIR VZW TOTAL PROTECT-PREMIUM THAT INCLUDES McAFEE, SUPPORT TECH 6AM TO 11 PM 7 DAYS PER WEEK AS WELL AS INSURANCE FOR MY GALAXY S5.
Nobody wants to read a wall of text in ALL CAPS. It's harder to read. Are you shouting for a reason?
Do you really care? How about we refrain from territorial pissing and
answer the freaking question or shut up?

Not helpful. What occurred? Care to elaborate?
@tsweeny
Open "Applications" in the tools menu, select "Application manager", and at the top scroll across until "All" is highlighted. Scroll down to VZWAVSSERVICE. Select "Force stop", and then "Turn off."
This also has an effect on email since the update I have not been able to sync to either of my email addresses. You would think that these things would go through a QA process to make sure no errors such as this happen. My smart phone just got dumb.
I haven't had any issues with email. Only the Antivirus program no longer
scanning downloaded files. Verizon did have to replace my phone because 4G
quit working but it is fine with new one after update. Just that annoying
error message.
On my VZW Galaxy S4, with vzwavsservice turned off, the boot animation seems to fail, looks choppy, and boot/reboot of the phone has to restart.
With the service turned back on, the boot animation animates successfully.
I spoke to VZW yesterday. The tech, reading from his database, confirmed that VZWAVSService is in fact the Verizon Address Verification Service. He could not confirm what functions on the device are affected by this service. The tech indicated that VZW would be making an update available for at least the Galaxy S5 within the next month in order to address the problem. I asked if this would mean another Android OS update, or simply an application update, but he could not answer. I also asked if this were to be bundled with an OS update, would VZW move to Android 4.4.4 at the same time, but again he seemed to be clueless.
Same here with email. All my email apps are locked up. I have not yet tried to do the stop and reboot. Will attempt today. Given the recent cellular wars, I'm looking at going to T-Mobile!
I have been having this issue on my S3 and it started with the push of the ISIS Mobile Wallet in the last update.
With this being an issue, the only real solution i can ascertain is that you get the new secure SIM card from a Verizon Store or disable the service. The crappy ISIS Mobile Wallet payment app requires this new type of SIM card to run.So if you do not have this new Secure SIM the service has issues. VZ needs better error handling in their programming code so that if the Secure SIM is not found that it doesn't crash the service it just logs that it is not present and moves on.
If you have no intention of using the ISIS app, like myself because i already use the Google one, then disable the service in your application manager. If you intend to use the ISIS Mobile Wallet app then you will need to get the Secure SIM from a Verizon Store.
I don't think just getting a secure card will fix the problem. I got a new S5 a few weeks ago which came with a secure card, and still had the problem. 4.4.2 has a lot of problems, at least in the Samsung version. I've found several apps that now do not work right, both on my S5 and my Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition tablet with 4.4.2. The problems with the tablet aren't Verizon, since it's WiFi only. I don't know why Samsung is dragging their heels updating to 4.4.3 or 4.4.4.
Hmm that is a good point.
I would hope that they would update sooner rather than later but the updates won't only be delayed at Samsung because VZ has to do their own mods to the ROM that delay a rollout further even after Samsung releases their version. And VZ has never been one to roll out new versions of Android quickly.
I am wondering if they are delaying it for release of Android L. I would think that might be more prudent than pushing out an update that will be outdated not after release with a huge change like L is coming. Just my 2 cents although with the expense of VZ service that's all I have left lol.
New information about the issue (aka great news, problem resolved, etc.):
Just found a summary of changes noticed to date with Android 4.4.4 update for the Verizon SAMSUNG Galaxy S5 -- still no "official" change log:
"Numerous users on various forums and Google+ posts have noticed that the Fingerprint Scanner animation has been improved and it works way better than it did until now. Also, the Visual VoiceMail has been tweaked, the Bluetooth headset loss of audio has been fixed, the Smart Remote features a new design, the Emergency Call button that’s present on the lock screen can be initiated by swiping its icon, lock screen landscape is now support on lock screen, and numerous other small tweaks done to the overall UI.
... The new update has the firmware version set to KTU84P.G900VVRU1ANHA and it will surely be the final KitKat build that we will see released for any Samsung Galaxy S5 phone. ..."
What about earlier models? I just bought my Galaxy s4 mini a few weeks ago. Will I get the KitKat update?
Yes you will...
Thanks a bunch. This works?
Having the same problem here. Started about a week ago. Thought it was an error I could just ignore. Now its interfering with me being able to keep a good connection. I have done the suggested clear Google+ updates but that doesn't seem to be helpful.
Disable the vzwavservices under application manager
Once I updated to 4.4, problem went away. Have you done that?
On Tue, Sep 16, 2014 at 9:16 AM, Otterpond <forums@verizonwireless.com>
The latest system update that was just installed today on my LG G3 solved the issue.
Hey that's Great b
I am pretty sure that VZWAVSSERVICE is a Verizon's customer services tool. I uninstalled the Google+ Updates in Application Manager and that fix the problem. Verizon has some problems with their services and the integration with browser's Systems.
Where do I find VZwavsservIce to disable it??
Where? How?
http://thedroidguy.com/2014/11/fix-common-samsung-galaxy-s3-problems-errors-glitches-part-49-100210
The VZW AVS Service is obviously Verizon’s app that runs in the background. Only the provider knows what the service does. But the thing is, it’s not actually the service that causes the error message, it’s the newly updated Google apps. It seems there’s a conflict between this service and Gapps. Try to go to Application Manager and find Google+. There’s a button there that says Uninstall Updates, hit it and that should fix the problem. To prevent this error messages from popping up in the future, disable vzwavsservice.
I am leaving Verizon Wireless due to this issue and many more. I have spent some time going through the bloat ware that Verizon forces on all of the android devices they sell. It is sickening. I can no longer support android as they don't respect your freedom. Android needs to have as part of its licensing agreement a statement that says it is not ok for carriers to install and force features into the android os that the end user can not remove. We all need to start fighting this. This is unacceptable. We need to start standdizing these devices to accept whatever mobile os we want to onstall. Ubuntu phone is on its way to solving these issues. Verizon has no respect for your privacy. They have applications on your phones to setup remote listening and remote viewing of your cameras. It's on all of them. IOS does this as well. For those who can't give up the phone and leave Verizon just disable the mysterious vzw app. Disable anything possible that you don't know what it is.
