G2 won't "knock on" after KitKat

Since updating to KitKat last night, my LG G2 will "knock off" but won't "knock on". Tried restarting in safe mode, rebooting, recalibrating touch sensors, etc. I know how to use it; I've been "knocking on" since Christmas with no problems. None of the internet fixes work so far. The knock on feature is (was) my favorite thing about this phone.

We want to get you loving your favorite phone feature again, bacfire. Since knock off is working, that helps us know the sensors are up and running. How many times do you knock on the screen to turn on? When you're trying to knock on, do you have the phone on a flat surface, in portrait mode, or in landscape mode? Do you have a case or screen protector on your phone?

i have the same "knock on" issue after kitkat update and also can't pull down notification message in portrait mode.

it seems top third of the screen in portrait mode doesn't respond to touch.

No, it does not work in Safe Mode either.

Now, I’ve also been tilting phone to landscape view in order to write email and enable “update all” icon in Playstore.

These problems need to be fixed.

I did the KitKat upgrade a few days back and have the same exact issue with the "knock on" feature no longer working but the "knock off" works perfectly fine. Yesterday I tried using safe mode, power off & restart several times, etc..... No luck! Today I have done the hard factory reset and STILL DOES NOT WORK!!! I have had this phone for less than a year. Utterly ridiculous in my book! Has anyone found a way to fix this? Do I need to go to the Verizon store and swap out this phone for a new one?? I am highly disappointed! Currently, not a happy customer!

You could try another FDR.

If that doesn't help, I imagine if you are savvy enough, trying the LG Support Tool to put the Upgrade onto your phone that way.

Short of those, getting a replacement may be in order. Show them the issuet at a CORPORATE VZW store.

Knock on is not working, not even at the safe mode.

I'm experiencing the same issues. Since the latest update, not only does knock on not work, but there is clearly a dead spot across the upper part of the screen that prevents tapping there. I had some craziness where the phone would start launching apps, copying things to the clip board, etc. which almost make it seem that the "dead spot" is really somehow sensing that it is being "touched", despite the fact it is not.

My wife also has a G2, and while she did not suffer the same fate immediately, her phone has now started behaving the same way.

I know at this point it appears to be a well-known issue with the G2, but there really needs to be a fix. When a device costs as much as these do, customers expect them to work. And since mine isn't just for phone calls and browsing, but is used for work productivity as well, it is very frustrating to have to deal with such issues and have no resolution in sight.

Sorry to hear you having been having trouble with the touchscreen. Let's do a quick test to see if that is a hardware issue. From a home screen, tap Apps (located at the bottom). Tap Notebook. Tap New note. Draw vertical lines from top to bottom. If the lines are drawn without breaks the trouble is likely software. If you are unable to draw vertical lines at some part that likely is an issue with the touchscreen itself and we would need to look at replacement options.

If the touchscreen passes the test we should look at the software. Try placing the device in Safe Mode: http://vz.to/1lZdbMN and retest. If these issues disappear while in Safe Mode it is likely a 3rd party app causing the issue. Selectively uninstall apps until the device is functioning normally. If the problem persists in safe mode then we want to backup and hard reset the device: http://vz.to/1uDdIrW .

I have run the Notebook test on both my phone and my wife's and both show the same results - a dead spot near the top of the screen in which writing does not appear. I have seen images other people have posted on the web that show the same results in a note, all of which appear in the same spot. This to me does not indicate simply a problem with a device, but a serious manufacturing defect. While Verizon does not manufacture these phones, they are sold by Verizon, and Verizon and LG (and other vendors who sell these phones for LG) need to come to some conclusion as to how customers' phones will be repaired or replaced. I do not personally want a refurbished phone to replace a new phone that should be working. Since this appears to be a major flaw in design and/or manufacture (as there appear to be MANY users suffering the same issue, and the same area of the touch screen goes "bad"), I think this will go beyond just replacing a couple of people's devices. I know I've seenpeople complain about the devices running very hot since the kit kat update (again, not necessarily Verizon's fault), and perhaps this has something to do with the screen failures (I have noticed mine running hot on occasion as well).

How do we proceed in having my and my wife's phones replaced?

Please be clear. Doing the Notebook test, there is a dead rectangle at the top of the note when drawing lines horizontally, but not when drawing lines vertically (although it does look like it skips a little through that zone when doing vertical lines). Will this happen on an otherwise perfectly functioning phone? This occurs in safe mode.

Your phone is still under warranty. The LG G2 didn't come out on Verizon until August or September of last year if I remember correctly. Also, if you purchased your device using certain credit cards (for example AMEX), your manufacturer warranty is extended by a year...

This kitkat upgrade is a joke! Absolutely awful and two trips into a verizon store and they said its not their problem as android released the update, not verizon.

Problems :

# terrible battery life

# cannot send picture or video messages, cannot recieve either

# dead spot on my screen, does not recognize touch

# no knock on/off feature

I CANNOT WAIT TO CHANGE TO US CELLULAR!!!

This all happened after the upgrade, i see i am not alone in this one. Verizon has not done anything to fix this that i can see. 5 factory resets later, still has not changed anything. In all the posts verizon states that they want customers to be happy with the upgrade, well then Fix the bugs!!! Offer customers refunds,DO SOMETHING INSTEAD OF RECOMMENDING REMEDIES THAT DONT WORK.

Here's the deal with KnockOn. The issue showed up along with KitKat, and technically KnockOn _does_ work, just not like before. The response time is MUCH slower than it used to be.

Instead of it responding to "Tap-Tap", it's now responding to "LongPress {release} LongPress". Try this:

- Turn your screen off, using the power button or KnockOff

- Use one finger to press (and hold) on the screen

- Say "one" to yourself

- Lift your finger

- Say "and" to yourself

- Touch the screen

- Say "two" to yourself

- Lift your finger

You should see the LED blink, and the screen will come on.

My phone started this same thing after the update. Small horizontal section of screen is dead. Verizon no help & wanted to replace with refurbished which is unacceptable to me.

I have dl'd an app...Gravity Screen...that works for my G2. No, it doesn't fix the knock-on inoperable problem or the dead section of the screen but with proper settings applied to the app, it actually makes my phone more pleasing to use now. Face down, screen off. Turn it over, screen wakes up. Lots of other settings involving the proximity sensor too for carrying in pocket or closing case covers like the original Belkin folio.

No more knock-on G2...my smartphone is smarter now with this app. I haven't noticed any conflicts after installing this app either.

So has there been a solution to the knock on problem? My g2 just started doing this as well. Knock off works but wont knock on. Also having issues pulling down the notification bar, if i dont go slow it just goes right back up. And having trouble typing in landscape mode using w, e, and s. I just did a hard reset and it didnt help any of the issues.

Same issue. Tried all of the recommendations: safe mode, drawing lines to show the dead spot box, etc. Are these screens/digitizers dead or will software resolve the issue. Rather not have a refurb but what choice do we have?

I think some have modded their device via [[rhymes with "boot"]] then putting on the Service Menu apk, then performing a touchscreen firmware update. Not positive. You'd have to Google it.

Oh come on! Verizon pushes through an OTA update that causes the G2 problems, then Verizon doesn't fix it and doesn't put the fire under LG to fix it, and then Verizon removes possible useful community-provided information that could help fix that which Verizon/LG screwed up. Ridiculous!

I am tired of OTA updates from Verizon rendering my perfectly functioning devices either useless or annoying.

If r**ters and h*ack*rs can find fixes why not the companies that are supposed to be supporting the device?

I am very frustrated that my G2 was working properly until Verizon provided an "update" that made my G2 no longer function properly.

What do you mean by "look over the pond"?

I believe the phrase is "get the hell out of Dodge". I fail to see how quoting Gunsmoke addresses the problem of Verizon/LG not fixing their mistake like a reputable company would.
