Lose Unlimited Data Options

I've been a Verizon Customer for 17 years and gone through many phones, contracts, and plans and I have been a very satisfied and genuinely loyal Verizon customer for the entire time.

Now I'm trying to upgrade my phone from an Iphone 4S to a 5S, but my options from Verizon are pay full retail price for the phone (who actuall does this?!?!) or "Upgrade" my plan and pay $20 more per month and take on the risk of data overages.

NO VERIZON! I don't want a new "Plan", I don't want to "UPGRADE" anything! I want to continue my service at the same rate with a new phone. I will try to find a 3rd party vendor at a resonable price, but yes I am preparing to move my 3 lines of phone service to T-Mobile or AT&T.

Does anyone have a recommendation or work around for my situation? Thank you in advance.

This has been policy since June 2012. So 21 months. It's dead horse stop beating it. At&t will not give you unlimited data either. Your bill won't go up by $20 it will be the same. You'll just get 2 GB of data instead of unlimited. As far as who pays full price? A lot of people. By the way if you go to T-Mobile to get the unlimited data they make you pay full price for the phone.

Based on my data usage, my bill would go up by $20 per month. AT&T and T-Mobile's equivalent plans would cost $20 less per month and they aren't going to charge me a $30 "Upgrade" fee for buying a new phone.

Maybe the real question should be, Why should I stay loyal to Verizon?

Options:

1. Pay full retail for new phone...you can use the Device Payment Plan to do this (not EDGE though, because you lose unlimited with EDGE.

2. Add new line of service, activate new phone on existing line with unlimited data.

3. Buy a used device from someplace like eBay or swappa.com; just make sure it is a Verizon phone with a clean ESN. If you buy used, you'll need a new SIM card which you can get free by calling customer service or going into a corporate store.

You are upgrading, because you want the newest iPhone, at the subsidized price. That is an upgrade. Lots of people pay full retail so they can keep unlimited data, and if you really do use a lot then it is worth it. If you typically use a very small amount of data and primarily use wifi, then the full price of the phone may not be the best option.

If you live somewhere you don't have home internet service, so you use your cell to connect at home, paying full price and keeping unlimited is definitely the best option.

It comes down to your use and what you are willing to compromise.

Verizon Max Data plan for customers currently on Unlimited data. It will replace your unlimited data with 6GB instead of 2GB for the same price. It is for ALL customers losing unlimited data, or you can choose 8GB with MHS for $50 a month. but the 6GB will be the same price as the 2GB.
