do I need to have an upgrade available to get the iPhone 6 if I trade in my 5s?

Great question, ajt3917! You would need to be eligible for an upgrade in order to take advantage of the promotion. If you are not eligible, you can appraise your device at vzw.com/trade in and purchase the iPhone 6 at full retail cost. You will then be able to apply the gift card towards your bill to help off set the charge.
