Scam from Verizon and Asurion?

What is the benefit of having an insurance Asurion on my phone if I have tom pay $99.00 to get the insurance company to ship me a new phone. With the $10.00 monthly charged I have already paid several times the phone itself... it is a gigantic SCAM !!!!

Really disappointed by this kind of service,

Do you have car insurance, health insurance, home owners insurance? Guess what ALL of them have a deductible. That's standard procedure with insurance. By the way Asurion is the assurance ALL carriers use. You go with another carrier Asurion is the company you will be dealing with. I've never had insurance on a phone, I take care of mine. Just take the money you would have paid in insurance and put it away. IF something happens to the phone you have some money to get a new one.

I have to agree with the frustration of felymich. I had my phone one week and dropped it. Paid the $99 deductible to get it back. So in less than one month, I am paying the $99 deductible plus a little over $600 to get started with 3 smart phones and 2 tablets, which are on 2-year contracts to save money upfront - or so I thought.

As far as deductibles go, on a $15000 medical procedure I paid a $150 deductible - the insurance company paid the rest. So paying $99 for a $400 phone is absurd. For the monthly payment, I would have thought paying the shipping and handling fee would have been more in line with being reasonable. Unfortunately, the whole cell phone industry is over-priced, and a few people would be inclined to call it scammy.

However, that being said, I am still using my cell phone and paying the high fees to keep using it, along with two other cell phones and 2 free tablets - which by the way the tablets cost me $120 the first month for miscellaneous fees. I guess "free" is relative. I wouldn't begrudge anyone who feels the need to vent because they have to bend over and take it up the tail-pipe in order to keep enjoying the wonderful convenience of technology.

Tidbits

Sheyenne you must have good coverage or had very few complications since you had insurance. If it's through your employer then your total payout per month is actually higher than what you are paying. Over the course of 10 years with little to no complications you and your employer pay roughly 12x the 15K that procedure cost. Also depending on what procedure it'll affect your deductible you pay. So remember the more you pay upfront the less your deductible will be unless it's catastrophic(that has the highest deductible). Some procedures only cover up to 80% of what the total cost would be.

vs.

more than like $1200 a month(total of what is paid for employer, and myself) with a $125 deductible(this actually varies depending on what procedure.

What insurance is that, Fantasy Island insurance? Most people I know with insurance have deductibles in the thousands. My mother works at Wal-Mart her insurance deductible is $2700 and even after that they only pay 50%. And she's paying $80 a month for that. So if she had $5000 worth of medical expenses in a year she basically paid $4800 or 96% despite having insurance. Anyway if you don't like the cost of insurance don't get it. Simple. You're not forced to have it.

I don't know about your medical insurance, but the premiums I pay for medical insurance come to ~$4000/year(does not count what my employer contributes) vs $120 for phone insurance premiums. That is 33 times higher than phone insurance just in premiums. My annual deductible for medical insurance is $3000, so I pay everything up to $3000 and then the insurance will pay 80% at an approved provider. With a $15000 medical procedure, first of all my insurance would probably only take $7000-$8000 as acceptable charges from the provider and simply not accept anything above that amount. So for a $15000(reduced to say $8000) medical procedure, I would pay $3000 deductible PLUS $1000(20% of $5000) for a total of $4000 out of pocket(not including $4000 in premiums) and the insurance would pay $4000(80% of $5000). $99 for a phone does not sound all that absurd to me.

Not that I have had many $15000 medical procedures...

Maybe her insurance is like that but there is a maximum co-pay that I must pay per year. For me it is $3000.00 a year and then after that my insurance covers it all 100%.

Health insurance varies. None are 100% the same.

If you pay a monthly premium, let's say I pay $85 per month.

Or roughly $1,000.00 a year. However I pay a co-pay of $20 per doctor visit or a $40 co-Pay max per visit. I have never used that $3,000.00 per year not even close.

When in hospital or doctors office everything is totally covered after I pay a small deductible.

If you have medicare that $3000.00 provision is no longer applied.

You primary insurance covers what ever medicare does not cover and that is the customary 20% if it applied.

It actually is based on what insurance you carry and believe me some as that Walmart one is terrible.

You must shop around. Just like car insurance, or life insurance, home insurance and even cell insurance.

So paying $10 a month for 24 months = $240 plus $99 for the deductible works out to $339. If you use the insurance once during the cycle you made out.

And if you think these phones only cost $400, you'd be wrong. Most smart phones begin at $600.

So paying $339 to replace a $600+ phone doesn't look like a bad deal to me.

Yes I have car insurance, health insurance and home owners insurance but all of them have supplementary insurance which is covering the deductibles of the main insurance so all times I got 100% back (current values).

Asurion seems to have the exclusivity of the cell phone insurance market!!!

Tjere are many Insurance Companies out there that cover Phones. Assurian just happens to be the one Verizon Contracted with. Some are better and some are far worse. The point is just like the Car and Health insurance, you have many choices in Cell Phone Insurance as well.

Actually at&t, T-Mobile and Sprint ALL use Asurion.

Plan will either fix your phone, or if not economically feasible, return your cost of the phone minus deductible.

I received full price for a 20 month old laptop that couldn't be repaired.
