Android bloatware alert: DT Ignite automated app installer spotted on T-Mobile, Verizon phones | PCWorld
nope, how about yours??
just what galaxy product are you using or is your username misleading?
Username spot on and I was loaded :smileysad: you know the deal. Uninstalled all of the standard "you can't do without apps", now free and clear. and :smileyhappy:. Thank you for reply.
If you read about it, it is quite scary.
It allows the carrier to get into your phone and install software such as promotions, ads, banners, etc.
The software can bypass the installer and install it self without your knowledge or consent.
It can also install bloatware which uses the metered data you use at your expense.
Right now it has been on the note 4 and the Lg g3 (from what I read).
It is real and currently in all the news. The crazy thing about the software is that it is granted access to all information on your phone and can install anything it wants w/o your knowledge or consent...actually you can't even say no or uninstall it. Currently the only phones that seem to be immune are the nexus phones and of course any windows/apple products.
It's very real and as you say somewhat scary too. I suppose there are many way to look at this, but I do feel when we buy a phone it should be clear of this junk. I have never been happy with carriers pre loading any phone.
Take the tin foil hats off. Anything installed by the payload can be uninstalled. It only happens at setup process and won't happen again until a factory reset and going through the setup process again.
This setup if WHAT people ASKED for over it being stuck on your device and voiding your warranty to remove the apps.
Yes it's a bit odd but most phone buyers want those phones fully loaded with almost every app in the store. At this rate we may need 5 Ghz processors and a top heavy RAM load. thanks Tidbits
Google is playing happy median in order for something to get "powered by android" and Google services. They have to use the payload system implanted in Lollipop. By doing this it gives us what we've been asking for. I have already seen it on my Nexus 5 and Nexus 6(I returned this one). I praise Google for doing this.
Just found it on my Note . I was going through the list of crap/bloatware and googling to see what each does, and holy smokes, the press on this one is bad bad. Its sole purpose is to allow providers like Verizon to load onto your phone without your knowledge or consent whatever they wish whenever they wish. And what they wish the loaded stuff to do is to send notifications and load through the back door apps that generate advertising revenue and eat your bandwidth. Don't think so? , search for " Digital Turbine Ignite" on youtube, the maker has a hilariously grotesque video about what it does and why its so wonderful. The outrage from consumers who are decidedly unamused is written in the vid's comments.
At present I have the thing supposedly disabled, and I have gone, somewhat laboriously, through the process of turning notifications from the app off, and then going through all of the applications and selectively turning notifications off for each one. But, are they really off or are these things vampires that came alive after the sun sets?
What really has me deeply concerned is there are so many apps on the machine that you cannot remove. You can easily spend an afternoon googling each app to see what it does. . I got one running now called Verizon Location Agent, which apparently is fired up by an app that calls for it and it reports your precise location to God knows who or why. Nuther example, mine came with this thing called NFL mobile. Nothing against the NFL, but the season is over. I can force it to stop, I can turn it off, and I can uncheck notifications. The one thing I cannot do is REMOVE it. No option to remove, or, move it to the SD card, which I would then remove from the device and drive a wood toothpick through its heart to prevent it from coming back to life. OK, I would just erase the card, I would not drive a stake through it.
I have been on the fence about getting a new warrantied phone rooted last couple of phones, so I can have super user privileges and remove this junk, have the ability to shut off ads, and have more control over what information these things send out. Sounds nice, but oh, I might brick the phone, oh,I might void the warranty. Well DT has moved me off the fence. With bad stuff like this out there and with no clear, honest description of what it does and no means to opt out (except maybe quit using a cell phone) , these things are 1984 Big Brother snoop scope in your pocket, and its time for consumers to revolt. I am starting with getting my new phone rooted by a professional service later this week, and big brother VZW can stick their warranty, er, in their round file.
Droid Maxx 4.4.4 runs spectacular very impressed. Other than learning how to work with photos, to get them for others to view. No update has effected this smartphone.
Dt ignite is backdoor that allows carriers to install software, ads, and other telemetry data w/o your consent. You also pay for the privilege of being spied on.
If you do some research you'll see it's not something you should applaud unless you work for verizon.
Bloatware at its finest and most evolved state. LOL.
