Eris 2.1 patch leaked (apparently, this one is REAL)

This is legit...

I've been testing and playing, my gmail sync works, Navigation is there... new market... tapping home screen gives thumbnails of all seven screens. Of course, I've only been testing for 15-20 minutes, but its snappy and everything seems to run as it should.

This is HTC Eris 2.1

HURRAY... we can turn OFF the vibrate for the home, menu, back, search keys!!!

Ok if i do this and update via this link when ppl say it will whipe the phone does that mean ill lose all of my contacts and stuff and if so is there ne way i can save them before i do this thanks.

It seems the upgrade is having mixed results with people who have done it. It's a bit quirky, but overall fairly good. I'm definitely gonna hold off until the official release.

So far its been OK. I did just find out that Live Wallpaper has been disabled. From what I've researched, the Eris really cant handle the overhead smoothly. The API is there and apps can develope to it, but the wallpaper option isnt available. The weather clock widget now sunshines or clouds your whole home screen once you unlock the screen! Its pretty neat, but using OSMonitor, I can see it pegs the CPU as it does it's magic.

I've been though the whole phone setup and nothing suggests its beta or incomplete. Nothing has crashed eother.

So far. I'm impressed!

This is totally Legit! Very easy to update. If you cant wait ... Go for IT!!! I've test almost everything and it seems to be working perfectly! AWESOME!!!

I updated and it works great. The only thing is no live wall paper but oh well. Very fast and responsive.

Naviagtion work perfectly as far as I can tell. The "leap" homescreens are flawless. I think of them as thrumbnails because when you hit home, all 7 screens shrink down to 1 screen and then you select which one you want to jump to.

The phone data DOES get wiped as your basically reseting the phone to 2.1.

The Eris SD card is 8,192MB (8GB)

I'm excited that this was leaked and I want to download this for my phone, but I have a few questions first. Will this void my warranty? Will I be able to downgrade to 1.5 if it is buggy and how? and Will I still receive the OTA update from Verizon so I can update to the official version when it becomes available?

I am most interested in the Speech to text as well. Can you speak into any area where you can type and the text get imputed by talking instead of typing?

The only update that I haven't manually done is RC30. Every update after that since my G1 was done flawlessly. And no, you still wont recieve the OTA update as your Kernal will be that of the most current and updated one.

Downgrading requires you to root, and if this one is out, and it doesn't require you to root, then it's probably the same one that Verizon will release weeks from now.

Wow, am I one conflicted boy now! Ya see, we're a multi-Eris family. I bought mine and my daughter's new, but picked up my wife's Eris used...for a song. Since I did buy it used, I suppose that technically it has no warranty anyway. I had no doubts that this hack would work (after reading 60+ pages on that other forum thread), my only real concern was if I hacked MY phone, and then had a problem later, Verizon might say I was {word filter avoidance}, because the phone was hacked. But since my wife's Eris has no warranty anyway, I figured I had little to lose. So I hacked hers with this 2.1 patch. All I can say is "wow!" It's pretty freaking sweet. I mean, REALLY sweet! So now here I sit with the little angel on one shoulder going "wait for the OTA update Dave", and a little devil on the other shoulder going "HACK IT YA PANSY!". Woe is me. My wife's Eris is way sweeter than mine, and here I am being a good boy. I need to go find her purse and get my [edit] back! :smileymad:

I believe I did mention that I knew warranty concerns were an issue. Perhaps if Verizon posted ANYWHERE on THEIR blog ANYTHING about the OTA update to Android 2.1 which my Verizon salesperson told me would be coming mid-January 2010, members wouldn't be so tempted to perform non-factory modifications to their phones to get the OS they were promised by Verizon at time of purchase. Nor would Verizon's blog be log-jammed with posts everyday inquiring about when the aforementioned OTA update really was going to arrive. Just sayin'

I dont think this update is a hack at all as it patched the Eris with built in functionality (without rooting). I pretty sure it's the leaked version that Verizon is testing currently...

I also believe if the firmware version on this leaked version is less then the version that Verizon does OTA, we'll get patched to what Verizon sends us.

This 2.1 has Verizon VM, Verizon Market tab, etc... the only thing its missing is Live Wallpaper, but I think that's intentional as it would totally kill the Eris' performance.

I'm on day 2 with the patch and no lockups, no battery drains and no "crashes".

There's a difference in 'hacking' or 'rooting' a phone, and applying the update that was leaked. First, word of 2.1 hitting the Eris was going around anywho. You can find articles on it at www.phandroid.com.

Secondly, the act of rooting your phone goes deeper than just uploading at .img file. It honestly requires you to do some annoying work.

Thirdly, you can check the kernal of the update to see what it says. If it's not a normal name, then it's a 'hack.' Though if you've never rooted your phone I don't know how this could be anything BUT the real update.

2.1 comes with Speech to text app called "Talk". Does the leaked version have "Talk"? This BY FAR is the most useful addition to the operating system for the Eris. With this program anywhere you enter text with the keyboard you can now just speak it.

2nd most useful item would be proper Bluetooth abilities being the following: full hands free use for headsets. By law in many state this feature is needed to field calls while driving. With the Bluetooth update "Beaming" files also needed to be supported.

If either of these two features are not in the actual release then 2.1 is a bust. In my opinion it would not be entitled to the name 2.1 but relegated to 1.7 as it's true update number.

The above aforementioned updates affect productivity and are not eye candy.

2.1 is also suppose to handle larger signatures for e-mailing since many professions today have requirements for signatures that are over 200 words in length.

Funny you should mention that, as I was thinking the same thing after posting what I did. "Hack" is probably a totally inappropriate word under the circumstances, since no rooting is required. You're simply installing a download. It may be bigger than your average app, but you're still just applying a download. As far as if the gen-u-wine OTA update will supercede this one or not, I guess only time will tell. I will likely wait it out on my own phone so that there can be no debates should I need warranty repairs on my phone at any time. But as I said, that wasn't an issue with the wife's used Eris. The upgrade went smoothly on her phone and we were both oohing and ahhing over some of the sweet new features. We did it really late last night and I had to work today, so I personally haven't gotten to spend alot of time seeing what else is up, but just the increased functionality that's obvious at a glance just makes me that much more anxious for the official update to get here. You don't have to play with it very long to see that there are ALOT of improvements over the old OS.

Rumor on the "other" forum is that the Eris processor simply can't handle the speech to text function, but I don't know that to be a fact, nor have I gotten to look for it on the wife's phone. As for the full meal deal bluetooth, well, I don't think ANY of the Android phones do it at any price. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but if even the new power hitters like the N1, the Incredible, or the Desire don't do it, you just might have to buy something else.

I see your point, but your average google search term usually isn't more than three or four words. The capability may be there, but how much can it handle??

Well, the wife just got home, so I checked her phone and there's an app in there called "talk", but I've poked around in it and it doesn't appear to have anything to do with speech to text. It just appears to be an online chat program for gmail. The "Market" also looks COMPLETELY different for 2.1, as you'd expect. I did a search in her market for "speech to text" and got nothing. So I'm thinking you may be barking up the wrong tree dude. But I gotta tell you, even playing with this phone for just a few minutes is killing me! This has so many new features, it's crazy! C'mon Verizon...GET ON THE STICK!!!! You want us all to wait for you to give us all this cool stuff your way...well bring it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm twice as bummed now that I know what it's gonna look like! What are you guys waiting for???? So far, this phone is pretty bug-free. If you're waiting for it to be run through its paces and bug checked...so far, so good!

I would like to thank all those for using 2.1 and keeping us abreast of your findings. I am holding off until the official release. I only wish that Verizon and or HTC had issued a beta for us to try so they can see the issues from everyday users . Now I can only hope that Verizon reads these posts and corrects the final OTA.

I just talked with HTC today and she said that any day now we will get the new update for the ERIS and that it will be.....2.0, not the 2.1

If you look at the HTC website under the Eris. Click "downloads". You will find the 2.0 is already available. It is the 2.0.25 actually. It is a "patch" to help sync your PC to your phone. If you look at www.pch.com, you will also find a download that I was told by an HTC rep was the 2.1. It is not. It came out about 6 weeks ago and most phones should have it by now. The point is, I am not real sure that most of the HTC reps know what is going on themselves much less what to tell us. And Verizon is not much help in that ballpark either. I don't blame them as much as I blame the R & D department at HTC. The reps don't fully know what is going on because R & D keeps them in the dark. The way I figure it, we will get the 2.1 when we get it. Yes, I am just as upset as the rest of you, but all the rumors don't help matters any. :smileysad:

I can tell evereyone this... the battery performance is awesome now. I used to plug my phone in around 11pm with about 30-40% remaining (sometime less if I used it alot). Last night, I still had close to 80% remaining. I left it unplugged and this morning, I'm still at 70%. This also includes around 45min of music time.

It would help a LOT if Verizon would tell us when OS 2.1 will be available officially for the Eris. The temptation to try the early release would be much less.

Did you start this in the other forum too? The app you are referring is the SYNC software for your PC ONLY!!! Nothing to do with android OS update on the phone in any way. That version offers USB drivers for windows 7 and fixes a few other sync issues. Again, please stop repeating this (Not just you, but anyone else that has don it, you are confusing the other users that don't understand what they are reading just like you) on anything having to do with the update. Updates via HTC website that are for verizon phones are directed to a verizon wireless link for download, just like past phones. My XV6700 an XV6800 had the same links pointing to verizon's support to download the update from.

Does anyone with this update have apy problem receiving calls. When I am browsing on the web or just using the phone my screen will turn black for several seconds and I often miss the call. I updated my wife's phone too and had the same issue.
