no mobile data while on a voice call

just got the new Verizon HTC M9 today, I live in a full 4G XLTE coverage area and have always been able to use my mobile data and voice calls simultaneously, however on my new M9 I just get an error message that says mobile data not available while on a call. What the.....???..

You would either need to be using VOLTE (Advanced calling) or connected to wifi.

that's absolutely insane, why do I suddenly need to use LTE calling???? , I never had to use that before?? if I use LTE calling I lose my features like Visual Voicemail, name caller ID, city and state caller ID..... this is just ridiculous please fix immediately.

Plus.. I don't want to waste my data on phone calls, plus LTE calling really sucks because I'm driving most of the time and its not stable enough for that...

To use visual voicemail, HD calling, Video calling and VoLTE Advanced Calling, you must have a data connection over LTE. AC/HD Calling does not use Data allowance. It uses data, it requires data, but it does not count towards your data allowance.

Although using video while calling VOLTE does count toward your data allowance.

As far as I know crowsnestitsupport you have never been able to simultaneous voice and data unless connected to wifi while calling, with the addition of VOLTE you can now do the same while not on wifi (with the additional restrictions of VOLTE of course). Correct me if I'm wrong Snn5

Using Voice and Data should not require turning on HD Voice on the phone, although it is a benefit. The only phone where this should be critical to do is on an iPhone. Otherwise, most Android phones should have no problem so long as the area is LTE.

If your phone is on 3G, the device must be able to support SVDO, which will allow you to use Voice and Data while on the CDMA network. Many phones that support this have a radio that is dedicated just for data, and another that can be used for voice. My Galaxy S3 certainly did this, and was very handy.

In an LTE area, the phone needs to be able to use both CDMA and LTE at the same time - again using dual radios. The Note 4 I currently use can do this, however the dedicated data radio does not support CDMA - only GSM/LTE. If I happen to be in a 3G area, my phone, unlike the old S3, will not be able to use data while on a call. HD Voice wouldn't make a difference being on or off as it requires an LTE signal (even if not in an XLTE area).

Just something to ponder. Might be worth checking to see if your M9 has a dedicated data radio in it.

smith6612 the newer android phones do no have dual tuners hence why you need Advanced Calling enabled.

Not any more! Most of the new Android phones are saving the cost and battery usage of the second radio, so they are just like the iPhone now. You must use VoLTE if you want simultaneous voice and data.

I just tested it. I have not enabled Advanced Calling on my LG G3 and I am certainly able to do voice and data at the same time. I would not enable AC until I can keep my ringback tones, all devices are compatible or it is forced on me with no choice. Whichever comes first.

Android has supported this feature looooooong before AC. Just throwing that out there.

I got my M9 on Monday, Edging up from a G2. I'm seriously considering going back to my G2 and getting rid of the AC. The cons seem to be stacking up and towering over the pros of keeping the M9. I'm in an area that has spotty LTE. Based on everything the Verizon site is telling me, with AC, my calls are going to drop if I lose LTE signal, then I lose voice and mobile data anyway. Plus, I lose my ringback tones with AC.

Someone mentioned that the G3 is able to do mobile data and calls? Maybe I'll just update there. Maybe I'll hold out and see what's coming with G4.

It's a safe bet that all new phones coming out will depend on AC for simultaneous voice and data. That is the future. It is not worth the extra costs for extra radio circuitry, licensing for that, and the battery impact of 2 radios.

I personally wouldn't edge up from a G2, not after a fairly successful 5.0.2 update, and the phones specs are still better than anyone really needs and better than 90% of the phones already out there.

You ain't kidding. I was considering Samsung as my next device but I looked at the GS6 and totally saw what an Apple device would look like with Android OS. It wasn't pretty. They took away removable battery and expandable memory. I gotta say, I had gotten used to that with iPhone and G2 but with G3 and these 2 things I wouldn't change it for anything. It's most helpful when a factory reset is needed. I don't have to go through the hassle of plugging into my computer to upload my music again. I just remove my memory card and do the reset and put it back in. The features that LG leaves out are nothing I am dying to have anyway.

Well, to be fair, LG has a lot of features, but Verizon blocks them to include back up features for some models, and most notably the LG PC Suite which works like Kies does for Samsung and has even more functionality.

I just FDR my G3 and used the LG Backup app from the Play Store. It restored most everything. The most I was concerned about were the customizations I have on my home screens.

According to sprmankalel the G3 can talk and surf without AC. (read 13 posts up) I know the LG phones can send MMS with data disabled, but thats another issue.

I do not have AC enabled on my G3 and I am able to talk and surf.

Let me correct a few misconceptions here. I tested and researched this at length.

#1, HD or Advanced calling IS the same thing as VoLTE calling.

#2, that feature DOES need enabled all late model phones, including: s6, s6 edge, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 plus, M9, droid turbo and others, in order to support simultaneous voice calling and mobile data.

#3, just because the feature is enabled, does NOT mean your phone will use it.. Enabling it only enables the radio to transmit both voice and data at the same time. A call will only be completed via VoLTE if the person you are calling also has VoLTE enabled and both of you are in good LTE coverage, otherwise your phone will continue to use legacy 1x voice calling as it always had in the past.

I have enabled HD calling on my M9 and both voice and mobile data work flawlessly all at the same time just like they always have and my phone has never yet made a single VoLTE call since turning it on. That was several 100 phone calls ago.

And #5,

I also have a G3, and yes, its still the old way, both voice and data work at the same time without enabling HD calling.
