I have a Note 3 with 5.0 Lollipop. It takes forever to automatically switch from lte to 3G. Is there a way in settings or a playstore app that will allow me to manually set network to 3G in areas I know have very weak LTE?

Go to Settings->Device->More Networks->Mobile Networks->Network Mode. You'll then be able to change your 4G LTE to HSPA+ or 3G.
There are only 3 choices available Global LTE/3G or Gsm. It ckmes up as a
popup now with no advanced to choose. It is different since the 5.0
update. I see no way to do it. Your method worked in kitkat.

What's your model number?
It is a Verizon Note 3 completely stock purchased from verizon with the
recent 5.0 update installed. The options mentioned before no longer exist
in lollipop. This means the real question is whether some app in the
playstore can safely toggle 3G/LTE manually in a Verizon phone with
lollipop update installed?

I gave my reason in the original post. There are some areas I go that I
know from experience have better 3G reception than LTE reception. When in
one of these areas it may take 10 minutes or more for the note 3 to finally
switch from LTE to 3G on its own. During this time the phone gets hot and
rapidly uses battery in a fruitless effort to maintain an LTE connection.
If I could manually toggle to 3G when in this area then toggle back to LTE
when leaving the area I would have faster not slower data and save battery
to boot. Why is 3G faster? Because it connects and works in these areas.
LTE is down to 1 bar and doesn't work at all but it takes a long time to
automatically switch. During this period I waste battery and get NO data.
3G data is faster than no data at all.
