Voice Mail Indicator on Motorola Droid without visual voice mail?

My Motorola droid wanted to set up visual voice mail (which I find annoying) so I declined. Now the phone will not display or indicate when I have voice mail. I went into setting and was looking for "Manage applications" but I cannot find it. Does anyone have a clue how to correct this problem?

Dial *86. Choose Personal Options (4) then Turn message waiting indicator on or off (1). I'd try that first.

You may need to disable visual voice mail in your app manager first. If nothing else, check your My Verizon page after logging in and go to Apps and Services and you can remove visual voice mail there as well.

Visual Voicemail is one of the VZW applications a person can't disable.

Correct, my apologies. I should have said, remove the feature from your line. It was then, at that point, that visual voicemail no longer showed as an app in my manager. I don't doubt it is still there, but it is no longer active. When I returned to use of basic voicemail, my visual voice mail app disappeared after a reboot and the visual vm button on my dialer became a dead-key and would only instruct me to sign up or enable visual vm again.
