Can I change upgrade to another device without upgrading?

I wanted to see if there was any way to change an upgrade to another device without actually upgrading. I have had my phone for two years and it is on it's last legs but my upgrade is not until December. I do not want to upgrade my phone because I do not want to stay with Verizon. I used to have decent service but in the last two years, it has gone WAY down hill. Most of my house now is at 1x. Some parts have no cellular coverage at all. I can talk in my backyard and that's about it. Is there any way to get out of ETF since my coverage has degraded so substancially?

Transferring upgrades does not work the way you think it does. You cannot do what you are asking. Even if you were upgrading today, you still couldn't cancel your line with out termination fees. The reason is when you transfer an upgrade, you really are not transferring the upgrade. You are only letting another line borrow you upgrade, but the contract still goes on your line.

This is a confusing post. If you want to upgrade it would require you to stay with Verizon, yet you're asking about how to get out of ETF's so you don't have to stay with them.

If you don't have service and aren't willing to purchase a cellular extender, then figure out which will be cheaper; ETF's or paying a bill on a phone you can't use and move on to another carrier.

You cannot get out of ETF's because there are ways to remedy the situation and service coverage is based on outdoor use, they can't take structures into account.

SO switch. Your ETF would be about $60 on one line. If T-Mobile or Sprint serves your area, they will pay your ETF for you. It makes no sense to stick with the service when it doesn't work.

ATT doesn't have any special offers if you are going to them. However, you can buy an ATT compatible phone on eBay or Swappa and use the BYOD for an automatic discount on your line. I was able to purchase used or new ATT phones from eBay for about $200. Since I had more than 10 GB data plan for $100, my lines were $15 a month.

SHop carefully and don't buy international phones, they will most likely not have LTE bands.

Thanks I did not know it worked that way. How do I find out when my contract is up? I actually gave away my upgrade on my phone(to another line) which is why I thought I needed to change the upgrade. But I bought my phone 2 years ago July so I should be able to upgrade in July from what you are telling me.

I read that the ETF is $350 not $60.

Can you help me understand what you did with ATT? I get buying the phone on ebay, etc. but what do you mean by using BYOD for a discount? Would that work as a new ATT customer as opposed to one just adding a line?

Your ETF is a declining fee, designed to pay off the rest of the phone they sold you on 2 year contract. It is $350 for the first few months, then declines by $10 a month. You can call and find out what the ETF would be for you now.

ATT has the same deal as Verizon. If the phone is paid for you get a discount on service. If you have less than 10 GBS of data, the discount is $15 a month, so the line fee is $25, not $40. If you have 10 GBS or more data plan, the discount is $25, so line fee is $15 a month. Very similar to Verizon More Everything.

I Purchased ATT phones from eBay. 2 were older models, but in mint condition and work perfectly. Another was a newer phone, just not a flagship model. I paid about $200 +/- each, no tax. Two have turned out to be unlocked.

I Bought a Note 3 when the price was coming down.

ATT activated phones with their SIM card. Unlike Verizon, they don't hassle over non carrier phones. You can activate anything that works, even if it doesn't work well.

WHen Verizon offered lower data and a sale, I repeated the process to come back. Saving my ATT phones, just in case. But in my case I get slightly better Verizon coverage in my area.

I Should add, ATT automatically gives the out of contract discount If you bring your own device.

You have to ask Verizon for the out of contract discount.

You gave away the phone on your upgrade, but YOUR contract was still extended 2 years when you did the upgrade. It doesn't matter what you do with the upgraded phone, put it on another line, sell it, it still extends YOUR contract.

My Verizon>My Account>My Plans and Services will break down all the lines you have under your account and you can see when your contract date is over.

I Missed the part about you having more lines. If you have lines in contract those would have a different contract end date. Your ETF may be much higher if other lines are more recently upgraded to new phones.
