Use both global plan and local sim card with Galaxy S4 in Europe

Hello all !

I got my Galaxy S4 in July 2013, and would like to use it in Paris for one week and three months in UK during my coming study abroad.

Question 1. is this Galaxy S4 already unlocked when I got it as claimed by Verizon?

Question 2. I plan to use Verizon global plan ($40/month) for two weeks at France, then buy a sim card one week after arrive in London and replace the existing sim card. I'll Inform Verizon to cancel my global plan and suspend my US plan without billing after the local sim card works, since I'm not on contract anymore. Three months later, I'll remove my suspension and re-join the global plan a few days before I leave for US. Cancel Verizon global plan after arrive US.

Verizon claimed there is no restriction in terms of add/remove the global feature, so I believe this is a plan which is the cost-effective and giving least headache.

Will this work?

Yes your phone is unlocked and can use SIM card from local carrier in Europe and the UK.

Contacting Verizon or accessing your account out of the country has been difficult for other customers. I don't know why.

i hope other will give there experience, but going with local SIM cards would be better the whole trip.

Being that you know you'll need to contact them, should you go the route you are mentioning and not just getting a SIM card, I would make sure you find all the appropriate numbers you'd need in order to do that prior to leaving. You could try calling via Skype or Chat session. You could also have someone local on hand to help you out; friend or family member that can call in on specified dates to cancel/inactivate etc.
