I have a prepaid plan and there is not a Verizon tower where I live so my phone just roams all the time. Is there a way I can switch carriers and keep the iphone I have?

You can. It seems you can also check and see by visiting Straight Talk website.
Here are some better instructions:

My phone is just a 3G it isn't an LTE. Does that make a difference?

Based on the second link I would say it doesn't matter. Then again it doesn't say either way. I'd contact Straight Talk and verify.
If it's an iPhone that is 3G only then it has to be an iPhone 4s or earlier. At any rate Straight Talk is an MVNO not a carrier. In other words they use the towers of actual carriers so your Verizon phone will work on Straight Talk it will just use Version towers which is what you say is the problem in the first place. So I don't see how switching is going to help.
We would be sad to see you go, yourstrulysav. Before you give up on us, please give our Prepay Specialists a call at 888-294-6804 from a number other than your prepaid phone. We'll be able to double check your area and see if there's another cause to all the trouble you've mentioned.
