laptop with windows 8 does not see phone

When I plug my phone into my laptop USB port it will charge but the vzw software assistant does not pop up or open. When I open windows explorer, my phone is not listed on the device list anywhere. I went to Samsung site and downloaded the drivers associated with my phone, installed them and restarted my computer, no luck, my pc just pretends my phone doesn't exist.

Thanks to Galaxy class and Salisbury for their input on my issue. I do have all of the correct software, what I didnt have was a USB cable that functioned! That is the first time I have ever had a simple cable malfunction on me, but that is what happened. After hours of searching for the cause of my computer not "seeing" my phone I resorted to the Holmes method of deduction......whatever is left after searching all other options, however improbable is the answer to the question.....took off the cable found another one and VOILA! The computer sees the phone and all is well. ...Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it!

You say you went to the Samsung site , did you download the correct version of the Kies software Kies 3.0 or 2.6? Which Samsung model phone do you have. Also what is your computer's Auto Play for USB set at? Kies link,

Hi, thetinpusher and welcome to Verizon support forum! If I may add to the thread of GalaxyClass good post. When plugging a smartphone into the USB port of a Windows operating system computer it will usually recognize the device. Other times it won't, even if the driver is already installed for the hardware.

When this happens you need to then open the Device Manager of the computer operating system. Once in there you want to look in Portable Devices. From there locate your device, it won't be showing as a disk drive as G:\ but phone model #. For example Droid Maxx will show up as xt 1080.

Then you want to click on it, probably a right click and Properties. Then configure your smartphone with the driver and enable.

According to the "About" section in the Settings menu, phone Galaxy S4 32gb is Version 4.4.2 and Kies 3.0 is now installed. It wasnt before, I did download the usb drivers for this model phone from the samsung site. Windows is still not seeing the phone. It is not in Device manager and the Autorun function of the VZW software assistant does not pop up or respond at all. So, it looks like Ive got the appropriate software, but I must be missing something.....

I am not showing any "portable" storage devices on the device manager. I did find it one time and now it is gone? it showed two E drives and one F drive, properties all said the same thing, these devices are not connected to the computer. I unpulg and replug the usb cable and no change. Then I close out of that and when I come back to device manager, there is no "Portable" devices at alll!!!! ARRRghlllll

You did find it one time but now it's gone? You can be 100% sure if that computer was in front of me, it would recognize any smartphone. No brag just fact. It's not the smartphone, get the computer to recognize it...
