can't turn data on while in a call

Samsung galaxy S5 I have had since August. This just started today. Got a call from someone that calls me all the time and needed to look up something and pulled the screen down to turn data on and get a message unable to turn on mobile data during a volte call. What? Have never seen this before and have always been able to turn data on while in a call up until today.

I was out and about so stopped at the Verizon store and explained to them what happened and lady said your data is not on what ever that meant and the other guy told her to make sure advanced calling was on and she said it was and she did something and said it's fixed. Ok come home and call my phone from husbands verizon phone and try to turn on data while in a call and now get the message unable to turn off mobile data while in a volte call and I still can't turn data on while in a call and use it. I have to hang up turn on data and call the person back, very annoying. Either they didn't understand the problem I told them or I don't know what's going on. Anyone know about this? Mary

Ok it's fixed and I am happy. I rebooted my phone, made sure wifi was off and turned data on and went into settings and the button to turn HD off was now lit up. Turned it off and I can now turn data on while a call is in progress. I have no clue how that got changed, gremlins I guess.

He has a basic dumb phone. How do I stop this I hate it. All I want to do during a call is pull down the screen and push the mobile data icon and have it come on during a call if I am not home on my wifi. Can we no longer do that? This has been very frustrating today getting calls while out and about and I had to hang up and call the person back after I turned the data on, don't like this at all. WHAT YOU WOULD WANT TO DO IS GO TO YOUR SETTINGS AND LOOK FOR ADVANCED CALLING OR VOLTE CALLING , NOT SO SURE HOW IT IS LABELLED ON GS5 BUT ON MY LG G2 IT IS VOLTE CALLING. LOOK IN YOUR CALL SETTINGS. YOU WOULD WANT TO UN-CHECK IT AND ONCE IT IS UNCHECKED THIS SHOULD NOT POP UP BECAUSE THE FEATURE IS NOT TURNED ON .HOPEFULLY THIS HELPS YOU OUT A BUNCH.

I went to advanced calling and see activate advances calling then under that advanced calling with a button to turn on and off HD voice and it's on but everything in there is grayed out so you can't push the button to turn that off. How the heck did this get turned on is beyond me as I don't mess with those settings and no one uses my phone but me. Mary

PUSH THE BUTTON TO ACTIVATE ADVANCE CALLING - THEN IT WILL ALLOW HD VOICE BUTTON TO BE TURNED ON OR OFF / SEE IF TURNING THE HD VOICE OFF THEN IS GOING TO HELP YOU OUT. BY TURNING OFF ADVANCED CALLING AGAIN AFTER YOU DESELECT HD VOICE

With the newer phones, they are using the new technology in Advanced Calling to allow voice and data at the same time. Most of these phones, such as the S5 and iPhone require data on all the time if you are going to use this technology. You see the phone call now goes through LTE data, but does not count against your data. If you turn data off, the call must go through the old CDMA 1x technology and you cannot do data and voice with that technology.

OLd old phones had 2 radios inside to allow old voice tech and fast LTE data to go at same time. With the new tech, they save money and battery life by only needing the one radio inside the phone.

Bottom line, phone is working as designed, all new phones will work similar to this and is due to the the Advanced Calling it VoLTE which uses data for calls rather than old CDMA technology. if you want voice and surfing, you'll need the data on Before a call.

I can't push anything in advanced calling it's grayed out or very lite in color and you can't push any settings in there. Are you saying since this last worked yesterday everything changed today and I am no able to have it the way it was? I sure hope not as I don't like this at all. Mary

GO TO SETTINGS GO TO MOBILE NETWORKS AND YOU SHOULD SEE TOWARD BOTTOM VOLTE CALL TURN THAT OPTION OFF BUT TO CHANGE IT YOU MUST TURN ON MOBILE DATA

Yes, I withdraw my comments. I was thinking S6 which does require Advanced Calling for simultaneous voice and data. The S5 does have 2 radios. Sorry for confusing the conversation.

I can go to settings, more networks and see mobile networks in there. This what I see and nothing about volte and I did turn data on. Here is a screen shot. Mary

OK , THEN GO TO YOUR MY VERIZON APP AND GO TO YOUR PLAN ONCE IN YOUR PLAN YOU WILL WANT TO LOOK FOR ADVANCED CALLING 1.0 LOOK TO SEE IF IT IS ENABLED OR NOT. IF IT ISNT THEN TRY TURNING IT ON , THEN REBOOT YOUR PHONE IT WILL ALLOW YOU TO SELECT ADVANCED CALLING AND HD VOICE IN THE SETTINGS SECTION OF YOUR PHONE THAT WE PREVIOUSLY HAD GOTTEN YOU TO. THE PHONE REQUIRES A REBOOT BECAUSE UPON REBOOT VERIZON WILL PUSH PERMISSION AND ACTIVATION TO THE VOLTE PACKETS OF PROGRAMMING IN PHONE OPENING UP THE GRAYED OUT AREA IN THE SETTINGS

Went to the plan tab in the app and the only thing there is use data calculator, add a line, and mobile to mobile calling. Went under device and don't see anything there either. Mary

OK, ON REGULAR WEBPAGE IF AVAILABLE GO TO MY VERIZON AND GO TO MY PLANS AND SERVICES AND THEN ON THE RIGHT SIDE YOU WILL SEE VOLTE, YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO REVIEW YOU LINES THAT HAD VOLTE AND ADD IT TO OTHER PHONES. Ok logged into my Verizon with my number on the computer and don't see my plans and services. Where on the page is that? My husband is the main account, does that matter? I don't see it on his page either. Mary

Ok sew my phone and number on the screen. On the right see volte and when I click it says review your lines with volte. I click the red review button it takes me to the page with my bill, my devices, and my usage. Nothing about volte on that page I can see. Mary
