Messaging not working

Yesterday everything was working fine and then last night my messaging app stopped opening and would pop up a message that "unfortunately messaging is not responding." So I downloaded a third party texting app Textra. I can now send messages but am not getting any. The default messaging app is still not working. Textra is currently set as my default. Before installing Textra I tried just about everything except resetting my phone, just to get my messaging to work. I cleared the data, cache and settings for the messaging app, restarted the phone a dozen or more times throughout the night, did a force stop with a restart, ran the phone in safe mode, etc. I am a stay at home mom and texting is my main form of communication. My zip code is 56136, because I know that will be the next question. Everything else on my phone is working however.

Ldague89, we appreciate your efforts thus far. Did you hard reset it in Settings? A hard reset will wipe the device and reset it back to factory settings.

Did you redownload the same applications that you previously had on your device?

Try removing the SIM, power down, re-insert, power on. This might refresh the connection so you get and send all messages. What phone are you using?

I've tried that a few times already and it didn't fix anything.

You may need to call Verizon, and I'm sure they will suggest a factory data reset.

I'm sure, and that's what I'm hoping to avoid as I have no way to back up my phone at this time.

Ldague89, we want to get things back to working fine. Try deleting all unwanted text messages on your device to ensure that this isn't a memory capacity issue. Disable Wi-Fi and connect to our network. Lastly, power your device off/on to soft reset it. Keep us posted.

I can't delete any messages as the messaging app won't open at all. Wi-Fi is turned off and I've reset it dozens of times.
