I'm still confused about the Verizon provided McAfee antivirus software and when it protects my phone. For example, is my phone protected when I use a data connection over my home Wifi network?
Most mobile AV apps scan after you download an app. Some scan when you receive text messages. Most can be set to scan automatically at a set time, scanning all files on the phone and SD card, if available. A few will scan links as you browse. I think most people who use AV apps (much debate on whether it is even needed) use a free AV like Avast, AVG, 360, or another and some combine Malwarebytes for spy/adware. I have NEVER seen a virus on my phones no matter what I put on them. In fact, I had to purposefully download a test virus file just to get a virus notification. I think AV apps are a waste of RAM, but some people need a sense of security. So, in that regard I would never pay extra for McAfee, Lookout, or any of the rest of them.
