Verizon will not port my number

I'm trying to move from a small carrier (Chat Mobility) to Verizon. I'm moving 3 phones now and will add another 2 next year. I really want to take my old phone numbers with me. When I went to the store today they told me it’s not possible to port the numbers. How can that be? I know Chat Mobility runs on the Verizon network so I know they have coverage here. Verizon doesn’t have a problem selling me a phone with a new number for where I live but won't let me port my number?. When I talk to tech support they just tell me "that's weird" and can't explain to me why. Please help.

I'd call the to see if they have a way to "migrate" the phone number instead of trying to port it. I know that's how some other carriers do those transfers...assign a temporary number, then migrate the old vendor carrier phone number from the vendor system into the standard postpaid system. Hope they can get it straightened out for you, but like daonys said, it's possible they may not be able to perform a migration, either. It's always worth a shot.

The carrier is the one that will not allow the port, and a migration will not help either. So unfortunately unless you want to stay with this carrier, you will need new numbers.

Unless you have asked about migration specifically, it's a totally different process from porting, and only Verizon would be able to answer that question, pherson.

I know what I'm talking about. Unfortunately, as you have proven, others do not.

They will not be able to port OR migrate from that particular carrier.

Wow. No need to be insulting. I've been in wireless over a decade. I've performed migrations. I know they can be done sometimes. I never said *always,* pherson

I talked to Chat today and they said they are not blocking the port.

I talked to Verizon again and was told they are not licensed to carry 712-527 numbers for that rate center and there is nothing they can do about it.

If they are not licensed to have the number then then it is not portable.

Could you call your carrier and see if they can help verizon take it over?

Not licensed means not able to, i.e. not legal. It prevents monopolies before or after a merger.

Regulated by GOVERNMENT.

We.are.just.trying.to.HELP. Good to know that is not allowed. This is the first time I have learned about this issue. I always thought number were numbers.

The irony is, when they killed Ma Bell and cell was on the rise, customers were all assured we could always keep our phone numbers.
