Droid 4 to Windows 8 file transfer

I'm trying to transfer files from my Droid 4 to my new Windows 8 laptop. Changed the settings so that the USB connection is set to Mass Storage. However when I connect via the USB cable, I can't see the Droid as a connected device. The phone and laptop are paired via Bluetooth, but the PC still does not recognize the Droid. Any suggestions????

I'm terribly sorry to hear you're having such difficulty getting these files transferred. I know how important it is for those to work. Have you been able to try the USB on multiple USB ports to see if there is any difference? Does the computer recognize anything when you plug the phone in?

Yeah, download the software Snn5 is pointing you to. Then possibly your phone will be recognized by the PC and it will install the drivers. You may have to select MTP mode on your phone. If this doesn't work, then try a different USB port on the PC.

If that doesn't work... here's an option I prefer:

You can also transfer files using FTP protocol over WiFi. Google SwiFTP, download it from the web and "sideload it". This simply means you momentarily adjust security on your phone to allow install of programs from untrusted sources. You can use another FTP server if you don't want to use this one, there are others in the PlayStore. I just personally prefer this one.

On the PC, you'd use a FTP client like FileZilla or another of your choosing. This is the one I prefer.

You run the SwiFTP server on your phone, and it creates a port that the client can connect to. You provide it a username and password and tell it to start.

You provide the same username, password and port number to the FileZilla client and once the two connect, you can transfer files between your phone, back and forth without a USB cable. Drag and Drop. Works great.

I did try all the USB ports with no results, HOWEVER...

The issue was hardware related. Not the phone or the laptop, but the USB cable (go figure). Had previously tried the cable I use for charging the phone. Found another cable in my bag and (on a whim) tried that. I can now see the phone and all its files on the laptop. Reminds me of the cardinal rule of troubleshooting....'is it plugged in?"
