Moto X - I keep getting "message not sent" all the time even though my text messages are being received.

It happens on every text, both with and without pictures. using factory messaging app, not a 3rd party. have shut down numerous times. Cannot see how to get battery out?
Thought it might help to reboot.
The Moto X has a nonremovable battery; hold the power and volume down buttons for 15-30 seconds to simulate a battery pull.
