Correct Procedures for G3 Lollipop Update

All,

After putting off the update as long as possible I took the plunge yesterday and installed Lollipop myself before my phone tried to auto-install on it's own. I've done my research like everybody else and luckily it paid off with a flawless upgrade from KitKat to Lollipop on my stock Verizon LG G3.

All the credit goes to Snn5 , their method stated worked perfect if followed correctly without deviation and I'll post the original text below.

"Plug into charger for the entire process

Charge to 100% and back up and factory reset the phone

(DISABLE google backup and restore of apps and app data)

Install update

Factory reset one more time

Unplug from charger

Set up your phone

Leave phone on until it dies and turns off 1 time

Leave off and recharge to 100%

This is my usual process and I have had no issues.

The reasons for disabling app data is due to the fact that DAVLIK is now ART and the Android Optimization process might not go as planned if you just slap the new OS over the old OS. Also, when you go back to the Play Store to download apps, they will be the correct version this time for this OS. Also, if contacts will not sync correctly, check your ICE contacts (might have to delete those)...sometimes they prevent a proper sync."

I know it seems to be a lot of hassle to backup the data and loose any game progress but a fully functioning phone is more than worth it. Again a huge shout out to Snn5 for helping me not brick/ruin my phone!

how would you suggest to back up phone/ what program

Google contacts are already synced to Google Gmail. You can backup everything else to Google Drive. Your apps are remembered in the Play Store. The object is to NOT re-install old app data as that is what causes a lot of update issues.

Yeah, but leave it plugged into a charger while doing this anyway. The reason being is that sometimes updates fail if there isn't 50% or more charge. IDK why, it never takes that much power to install an update. But, my reason is that this keeps the battery stats correct, which is also redone again after a full cycle of use and an overnight powered off recharge. People will disagree about battery stats, but given folks fuss about battery life be it from a crashing app or battery-hogging app, why not just cover that base while you're at it?

did you do the update OTA (over the air) or using SUA (software update assistant) on a computer

Strangely, I NEVER got the SUA to even recognize my phone. I did so OTA. I see there is a newer version of SUA that now sees my phone, but cannot actually read it and the recovery option that has now been added refuses to even recognize my phone.

1. Why are these instructions enclosed in parenthesis "( )"?

2. How do you do this? By going into Settings > Backup & reset and the unchecking "Back up my data"?

3. When do you do this? Before selecting "Factory data reset" for the first time (in KitKat) , second time (in Lollipop), or both?

4. When do you turn it back on (if at all)? During the installation of Lollipop?

You do one FDR before the installation of the update (since it is already downloaded) then FDR the 2nd time after you have installed the update.

4. When do you turn it back on (if at all)? During the installation of Lollipop?

During setup of the phone when you add your Google Account

Thanks for the prompt reply. Still confused though. I know you do two Factory Data Resets (FDRs), but I'm confused about when I'm supposed to uncheck the "Backup my data" box. At present, I have KitKat on my phone, and I have that box checked. Do I uncheck it now, before doing the first FDR?

Yes, uncheck the boxes before first FDR.

Once you get the noticifcation that the update is available or has already downloaded, BUT has yet to install:

1. Stay plugged into charger for the entire process
2. Charge to 100% and back up music, photos, files etc...contacts should be saved to Google Account and use Google Drive or Google Photos to back up with as well and apps are saved in a list in your My Apps screen in the Play Store app and online using the desktop page.
3. DISABLE Google backup and restore of apps and app data in your Backup and Reset tab in your phone's main settings screen.
4. Factory Reset the phone
5. Download and/or Install update from notification bar at next boot/power on after skipping set up if possible
6. Phone will reboot after installation. Factory reset one more time as soon as possible before setting up the phone (you may have to press the back button a few times to escape the set up screen, or you may be able to skip it. Just go back to the Backup and Reset tab and FDR again.
7. Unplug from charger at 100% recharged
8. Set up your phone however you like to include apps from your My Apps screen in either the Play Store App or from the PC webpage version
9. Leave phone on until it powers off
10. Leave off and recharge to 100%

Thanks to this post, my G3 now looks identical to the way it did before, but with Lollipop running underneath it instead of KitKat. Since I'm not being distracted by the raft of hiccups plaguing other owners, I can appreciate the fact that Lollipop does seem marginally faster than KitKat at everything, and this IS as it should be, but I'll stop short of saying this update was worth the effort. Before doing the update, I made notes to remind myself how my phone was setup: I recorded settings for the phone, settings for specific apps, email server addresses, and a list of just which app appears on which screen of the phone. Arguably, I should have done this long ago because this is not the first time that I've had to hard reset my phone. I also backed up everything to three different clouds: Verizons (a slow-poke), the one for CM Backup (faster), and Google's own servers (for photos and gmail contacts). That last part was unnecessary, but I didn't trust VZ Backup since it didn't allow me to browse my backed up contacts, even though it does in fact back them up. Anyway, I spread that prep work over a few days because -- believe it or not -- I do have other things to do besides updating my phone. Once started, the hard resets (2 of them), the install, and the effort to reconfigure my phone to it's previous setup took about 4 to 6 hours. Waiting for the phone to drain down to nothing was no big deal since it is usable in that time, but waiting for it to fully recharge in a powered-off state is something best left doing while you are asleep or in some capacity where you don't need the phone. Now everything seems to be working perfectly, but the cost of getting it this way required more effort than any "user-friendly" device should demand.

Just curious, but where did you first discover the right way to do this? Is it buried somewhere at LG's website?

Well, I kind of put 2 and 2 together. Seriously...I pondered on why it was that I had issues on my G2 and my GF did as well after the update. Then I remembered the Davlik to ART change and then thought.."Maybe my apps didn't convert." Then I thought, "Wait...I backed up a lot of those app data settings then restored them." BOOM And then I figured...maybe this is the same thing for all phones coming from KK to LP.

Ok so I have a update. lol This morning I woke up and I have the update ready; Phone at 100% So I unchecked the following; FDR my phone. downloaded(over wifi); Installed update; FDR again once 5.0 was on, however I had to do it again bc it did not bring me to the setup screen. so I did another FDR and it started with the setup screen. Turned off the app data installed apps, turned app data back on- flawless.Thanks dude!!

Make sure under Phone Administrator (security tab main settings) you have the right apps authorized and any Notification Access granted in Accessibility. Make sure notifications are set within the app you want to notify you.

I did check that, and still nothing came thru. Got off of wifi, phone blew up. Went back on wifi everything connected but no notifcations. Installed the DNSet app, activated it, phone blew up with wifi and allowed access. :smileysad: So weird

THANK YOU!!! I was getting so tired of telling my phone no over a dozen times a day for the upgrade. I had to have Verizon replace my original G3 when it did the lolipop upgrade because it became a hot useless brick. When I got this replacement I was dead set on not doing the upgrade, but after 3 weeks of rejecting the upgrade, I went seaching for some answers. The steps laid out by Snn5 made sense and there were enough others that had shared my frustration in the thread that had success with the process that I took the chance. Though it is a major pain reloading everything, this process appears to have done the trick.

Thank you both so much for the process and the clarifications - Snn5 and sk-89. I was almost ready to cross to the dark side to Apple. This saved me!!!!

Still unable to send / receive Email with the Email app, Google Gmail works fine.

Only thing I did different, not sure if it made a difference, after each FDR I pulled the battery while it was on.

Then went about installing apps one at a time. Still a few more to go, some are a little quirky, when WiFi is on like Yahoo Messenger, but that may be the work web filtering
