What worked for me was a combination of efforts that somehow worked. I cleared and deleted the message app cache in App Manager, and also used a cache cleaning app from the Play Store like App Cache Cleaner, CCleaner, or 360 Security. Also, check the number of messages you have...you may have thousands and that causes some stress in the send/receive area.
