New Ellipsis 7 Experience with KitKat Software Update

Android KitKat is now available for the Ellipsis 7. The update brings new features like Emojis, wireless printing via Google Cloud Print, and Chromecast support. Customers with current software will be able to manually download and install the software update by going to Settings > About Tablet > System Update > Check New.

You can visit www.vzw.com/ellipsis7support for more information about software update benefits and step-by-step instructions.

If the current SW Version on your Ellipsis 7 tablet is:

Please call our Customer Support at 1 (800) 837-4966, and they will support you through the update process. You will be required to ship your device for this software enhancement.

I think ALL of the community members would appreciate it if you did similar announcements for all of the devices when they have an system update available for download.

when checking for the update it says not connecting to the network my wifi works for everything else. tried on the 4g same response

My software ended in a much higher number and ended with a "M". I did the software upgrade (?) and the number actually went down. Still scratching head... Tablet could do everything I asked it to do. Maybe I had a software beta version? .

Everything works...when transferring to SD card on tablet there is no problem at all. Device says SD card is added to memory of tablet. Says I have over 29.7GB of space and memory.

Still no ability to move apps to SD card? So why give an update that still keeps us stuck with the same problem?

Newer versions of Android, the operating system that powers the Ellipsis 7, do not allow apps to be transferred to SD cards.

There is a lot of information on the Internet about Android and external SD cards, including the potential security benefits of not permitting third party applications to write to your SD card. You can move media files like pictures, videos, music, etc., to your SD card.

This is not an Ellipsis 7 issue.

Interesting since my Samsung Galaxy S5 is an Android and puts my apps on my SD card no problem. Unfortunately, as is evidenced by the myriad of posts in these forums, this is an Ellipsis issue. The device was sold to me with the promise the SD card could be used for this (as it was with many other customers). People have been posting about this for over a year and Verizon has done nothing about it. Additionally, no correction was given to your customer service reps selling the product because it has been brought to Verizon's attention numerous times, but folks got sold the same bill of goods. This experience truly soured me and you can be assured I will never buy another tablet from Verizon.

Once you get the 4.4 upgrade, you should be able to move apps to the SD card. This is not an Android limitation, but will be a device limitation if we are not able to.

I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 running 4.4.4 and can easily do this.

When I press "Check New", it says: "Cannot connect to server". But I have a good WiFi connection. Please Help

The download requires a mobile data connection, it won't download over wi-fi.

Verizon are you kidding? Forcing us to download the update on 4G so we are then forced to use more of our precious data so that we get even closer to going over and have to pay you more money...... couldn't have just let us do this all over our secure wifi network? Sounds like just a way to get us to have to give you more money. Get this sh*t fixed and don't even try and blame android for this.

Data charges do not apply to this over the air (OTA) software update. This is the case with almost all OTA device updates. They do require a data connection to complete the software update, but the data utilized is not billable.

Could you help me with a problem downloading the Kit Kat update to my Ellipsis 7. I have been downloading the update for 3 hours now, with the status still at 0%.

It sounds like your Wi-Fi may be turned on or that you may not have a 4G connection. The update requires a cellular connection to complete and it will not use billable data.

1) Please turn off Wi-Fi (Settings > toggle the switch to off).

2) After Wi_Fi is off, please ensure you are in a 4G area and then restart your device.

3) Once the device restarts, the update will start downloading of the 4G connection and you will see the software update install notification.

I've updated my tablet and now my tablet is useless. I can't delete or write to my SD card. All I can do is store files downloaded from my computer and that's it. How do I fix this?

So is there anything I can do to eliminate the over 3 GB of wasted space taken away from since since this update. On an 8 GB tablet, I have 2.99 GB available, and only 1.84 GB used by applications. My "Misc Files" take up a bloated 3.14 GB. Since an SD card is worthless in this tablet, I'd like to know what can be done to clean this up. .

I have wifi off and connected to data 4g, have the build MV7B_31D41_422. I go into setting>about tablet>software update>check now. and still says that i'm up to date.

What if we use our computer to make the card ext instead of fat? Would that make it work?

I have both an Ellipsis 7 and Ellipsis 8. Both got upgraded OTA to Kitkat. Ellipsis 8 works as before. I can copy/cut/paste/delete files to and from the external SD card using ES File Explorer. Ellipsis 7 FAIL. Why does one device work fine and the other device become basically useless? All I want to do is copy/cut/paste/delete files (not apps) from my home computer to the external SD card using ES File Explorer. Also cannot copy/paste files from internal storage to external storage. I DO NOT want to plug my Ellipsis 7 into my computer every single time I need to transfer or delete files on the SD card. It used to work fine over the WiFi. My Ellipsis 8 can still do this with no problems.

Only difference I notice is the kernel version:

Hey all, in KitKat we introduced APIs that let apps read/write file in app-specific directories on secondary storage devices, such as SD cards.

We heard loud and clear that developers wanted richer access beyond these directories, so in Lollipop we added the new ACTION_OPEN_DOCUMENT_TREE intent. Apps can launch this intent to pick and return a directory from any supported DocumentProvider, including any of the shared storage supported by the device. Apps can then create, update, and delete files and directories anywhere under the picked tree without any additional user interaction. Just like the other document intents, apps can persist this access across reboots.

This gives apps broad, powerful access to manage files while still involving the user in the initial selection process. Users may choose to give your app access to a narrow directory like “My Vacation Photos,” or they could pick the top-level of an entire SD card; the choice is theirs.

To make it easy for developers to transition to these new APIs, there’s a new DocumentFile support library class. It looks and feels just like a traditional java.lang.File object, which makes it easy to adapt existing code:

These new APIs aren’t just limited to shared storage; they can be used with any DocumentsProvider that adds support for Root.FLAG_SUPPORTS_IS_CHILD, such as the advanced Vault example:

If you're an end user, please reach out to app developers to ask them to start using these new APIs. With these new rich APIs in place, this issue is considered fixed.

I would just like a straight answer: can I move apps to the SD card I installed, and if so, how? EXACTLY how. Not "download a file manager". I want to know which one, EXACTLY how to use it, etc. My 5-year-old daughter wants a game that won't fit because we can't move them to the SD Card. It says that after this upgrade, we're supposed to be able to...and the option isn't there. So could someone PLEASE tell me what the hell is going on with this thing?

Yes, Verizon needs to answer this question and either fix this issue or tell us it will never get fixed. If so I know that I will never by another Verizon Android product and will always stick with Samsung. This issue has left a bad taste in my mouth for over a year and it's still not fixed. I don't understand why such low app space. Without the ability to move apps to SD card then this tablet is utterly useless.

My Ellipsis 7 has been worthless since updating to KitKat 4.4.2. I wish I had Ice Cream or Jelly Bean back.

The screen is so slow to respond to taps that you wear your fingers out, don't get anything done and become totally frustrated.

Whatever is continuously running in the background ties up everything and runs the battery down while it sits idle with no apps active and the screen off. In this mode it would stay charged for days with Ice Cream and Jelly Bean.

The embedded email app is worthless not downloading messages when you open them but instead requiring you to tap another Download button and then another button to show pictures. It does not delete the emails from the server as it is supposed to but instead keeps reloading them. And doing away with the Select All, why?

No knows why bookmarks keep disappearing off the screen as fast as you put them there.

My problems continue but no one at Verizon takes any responsibility for this tablet. They keep telling me it's really some company in China, Korea or some place like that and they can't control them. Why put your name on it then? For this reason I will never purchase an item advertised as a Verizon brand again.

When my Motorola droid Mini hit this same horrible version (4.4.2) of KitKat Motorola responded quickly and sent out 4.4.4 which fixed all of the issues I was having though the battery life was never quite as good as it was with Ice Cream.

Agreed that we should have been informed! I didn't know about the update and I cancelled my cell service for this line, so now Verizon Tech Support won't help me update the software after paying $240 for a useless device. Terrible customer service!

You could consider adding the tablet to the account for a month to get the update or start a prepaid plan for the device.
