My grandson used my cell phone during the night. We have wifi but used TONS of data usage. I didn't think it happened using wifi?
It shouldn't happen, but if your grandson forgot to turn on wi-fi or was too far from the router and didn't have cellular data turned off he could have been bouncing between the two. My suggestion is turn on wi-fi and turn off cellular data, especially if he plans to watch a lot of videos.
We never want you to experience any overages grandmasoup! I know I have been in your shoes before. What is the make/model of your device? You can always change your plan http://vz.to/14M9gib so you don't get any overages. If you Wi-Fi is on and have a strong router then it should not use data but if your Wi-Fi connection is weak it will go automatically to cellular data. If your grandson turned off Wi-Fi by accident could have caused it using your data. Let me know if you have any questions.

My husband and two of my brothers are all on the same account, I have an iPhone 6, my husband has an iPhone 6 Plus, one of my brothers has an iPhone 4, and the other has a Galaxy S6, after upgrading our iPhone 6 & 6 Plus to iOS 9, and adding the Galaxy S6 to our account, our data has nearly tripled, we barely use our phones for anything except texts and calls when we aren't home where we only use wifi, and my brother uses his Galaxy S6 less than all of us when it comes to data both on wifi and when out of the house, yet his data is somehow through the roof and counts for over 50% of our total monthly usage, my iPhone 6 uses the second most data and is only off of wifi while I'm at work, where I only use it during my break as well as the 20 minute commute each day, my husband is the next down on data with his iPhone 6 Plus and is home almost every day except for doctors appointments and our bi-weekly grocery store trips, at home he too is only ever on wifi, and when not home he rarely uses it except to occasionally check bank balances and to check the weather and lookup directions, my other brother and his iPhone 4 is always home and only ever leaves the house to drop his daughter off at the bus stop and occasionally go to a nearby convenience store for the basics, milk, bread, etc, which basically takes him out of our half block radius wifi range for under 3 total hours a week and rarely goes over 10mb a month, that's right I said 10mb, although with the things his data is used for, you would assume that his data usage would be the highest since when not in school his daughter is using it constantly for YouTube and Netflix and forgets to close his apps, the even odder thing is that except for the iPhone 4, most of our data appears to be used when we are on wifi, not using them or when asleep, my husband and I have dug through our phone settings and disabled nearly every apps data usages on his and mine iPhones except for those we most rely on, as well we have disabled the wifi-assist feature, and limited LTE use to data only, none of us know how to do the same with the Galaxy S6, and my other brother usually keeps his data off unless he needs to check his voicemail, it's outright ridiculous to need to bother with constantly switching our data on and off every time we leave or return home, data usage and actual phone usage and app activity just doesn't add up the way your numbers suggest, especially since who uses how much data doesn't make sense when you look at which types of apps we each use, please explain and help us further limit this, I'm not the only of your customers that seem to see these issues, in fact I have found and heard hundreds of complaints about this both online and at work and from other people in my area, this somehow needs to be fixed, my suggestion is that if this type of thing is going to stay common place that you should severely drop plan and data pricing.

I disagree, it is not Verizon's place to fix the hardware issues from manufacturers and/or the settings on your phone to prevent this. This is like saying if I have a leak in the gas tank of my car or some other problem is lowering my current MPG, gas stations should severely drop the price of gas until I get that problem fixed. NOT going to happen.
Which devices did you have previously when your data use wasn't as high?
