Verizon Edge Program, why would anyone choose this option?

Can anyone please explain why I would choose the Verizon Edge plan over paying for a two year contract? The phone I reviewed was $299 for a two year term or I would pay $27.91 for two years, costing me $699.84 over two years. I must be missing something obvious because, while I get the game of breaking down this cost into smaller payments, I see no benefit whatsoever in doubling what I pay in the end simply to make installments rather than one payment for half the expense up front.

I am really disappointed in the switch with Verizon, they've removed the benefits of switching phones at renewal time with low cost phones so now you pay this outrageous rate to have a new phone and offer a plan that seems like nothing but a downside.

What you are missing is the line access discount you get when you are on More Everything and paying for a phone using Edge - that is either $25 or $15 per month depending on how much data you have (6GB or more gets you a $25 discount) so over the two years, it pretty much results in the same net cost either way.

Depending on the phone you choose, the monthly payments may be less than $25, and you get an even better deal. And if yo were to put down the $199 or $299 up front, the monthly payment would be less than the discount, resulting in less cost to you over the two years of the agreement.

Look at the total cost over two years, and Edge comes up very comparable, and in some cases, a better deal than a contract.

Edge gives you monthly discounts while also on certain plans. For example, if on a More Everything plan of 6GB or higher, you also get a monthly access credit of $25.00 per month per qualifying line. So even though you're "paying" the price of the phone, you're really increasing your overal cost by $2.91 per month, which is $69.84 over two years. Much cheaper than the $299.99. If you are not on a qualifying plan like More Everything plan, or if you're on one that has a lower discount, the value may be better with paying the $299.99, but in most cases it's not anymore. I have been paying 40 per line with 4 lines and 20 on our jetpack, and 100 for 10gb unlimited everything, and our bill is bundled with centurylink, 280. a mos. I would like to pay less for our lines, but I was told I have to unbundle, and we have to have available upgrades. Can I not just change plans to the Edge if I unbundle? I have been a Verizon customer for over 13 years and would like to get the best plan for the most affordable price, what can I do?
