Yes, you can start an agreement for a hotspot device and begin a service plan. This is done just like you would buy service and a phone. Start here: Mobile Hotspots, Mobile Internet, MiFi Jetpacks | Verizon Wireless
Just be aware that wireless data can get expensive.
I would STRONGLY suggest against this. Any sort of streaming or modern Internet use is going to absolutely destroy any data cap Verizon Wireless provides. Wireless service from Verizon is not going to support this kind of usage well, which is why it's expensive. It's a mobile network for phones. If you do not like Comcast, see if there is a Telephone company offering (decent) DSL or Fiber service in your area.
To put this in perspective - let's assume Comcast currently charges you $70 for Internet service. In Comcast's Data cap markets, you pay for a speed (eg: 100Mbps down, 10Mbps up), and get 300GB a month to use. Comcast will bill $15 extra for each 50GB, and will allow you to go over once or twice in a year, per month. You could also purchase unlimited Internet from them for a small extra fee.
Using Verizon Wireless for data, you will have to purchase 10, 20, or 30GB of data if you go with "LTE Connected" service. Or, you can purchase an up to 100GB plan and tether off of a hotspot or mobile phone. This can run you anywhere from $60 to $300 a month. Speeds will vary based on your local tower's capacity, and the signal. Expect 5Mbps to 15Mbps down, 1Mbps-5Mbps up, on a good day. Data overages will run you approximately $15/Gigabyte, and there is no way to get unlimited data without going into the grey market of renting SIM cards from another person.
... stick with Comcast. Or find DSL/Fiber to use.
PROTIP to cutting the Comcast bill: If you rent their modem/router, please go buy your own. That'll save you $10/m or more.
