We're receiving calls from this number to one phone on our plan so far. Both times, the other end hung up when the phone was answered. No area code appears, which is strange.

This can be concerning & always a bit of a hassle when being contacted by someone you don't know. I've had this issue in the past. Good news is that you can block this number for free right from your my Verizon account for that line. You can't block the number the way you are stating because it doesn't come up as a 10 digit number, only 7 digits and verizon online does not allow that
