Hi, I am planning on switching from AT&T to Verizon but I am on someone else's plan . I want to be able to keep my number . Can I do that when I buy the phone now online or do I have to do it in store ? Also if I pre order the iPhone 6s Plus will I have to wait for my service to start or can I switch over my current phone and use it with Verizon until my new device comes in ?

To keep your number you will need to take ownership of your line from the account owner on ATT, then you are free to move your number to Verizon, depending on the terms of service with ATT. You will need to be in control of your number BEFORE going to Verizon. You can switch a device to Verizon, subject to their acceptance, however most GSM phones will not work on Verizon, with a few iPhone exceptions I believe.  At this point, it's a toss up of when your service would start because you won't even get the new iPhone in your hands on pre-order until late October, if even then.  I might take control, find a friend with an old Verizon phone to use in the meantime, and sit back and stay calm for the next month until your iPhone can be delivered.  Or, wait until you can buy an iPhone in-store and save the order and old-phone activation hassle, getting it all done in one stop.  ATT might have stipulations about assuming liability on a current line, such as the new owner may have to keep that line activated for x-amount of time, a credit check, or sign a new agreement.  They might not just let someone take over a line and change carriers.

Transfer billing responsibility for your wireless service

If your line is under contract, you will have to finish that contract or pay ETFs.  Verizon does not buyout contracts.  Some trade in and port in credits might apply to help in that situation to offset ETFs from ATT.
