Why does my battery drain so fast after the update?

Last week I got a notification that an upgrade to Lollipop 5.1.1 was available for my four month old Kyocera Brigadier, foolishly I upgraded.. The day after the update my battery lasted 4 hours from a full charge with little to no use. I have disabled every app possible, disabled anything that uses data ie. location weather, wifi is off, the only service activated is bluetooth which I need for hands free. Now I only get 6 to 8 hours on a charge not using the phone if I am lucky, where before the update I could go two or three days. I basically use the phone as just a phone and receive a few emails a day. Even if the phone is just sitting on my desk not in use after six hours the battery is down to 20%. If I am on the road for the day and using just the phone I have to plug in and recharge after three hours. This is getting ridiculous. Software updates are supposed to solve problems not create them. When is Verizon going to push out Marshmellow or provide a fix for Lollipop???

So I can better understand about the freezing and battery drain I have a few questions. Has there been any other changes besides the update? What happens before the phone freezes?

Software updates should improve your phone, not make it worse HoboBoy. I agree, this is ridiculous. We are here now and will work on improving your battery life. When was the update done on your phone? What is using most of your battery, settings > battery ? Same phone, same problem. I upgraded Saturday at 2a.m.. [removed] is a great pocket heater, but only lasts four hours. Used to last two days, unless GPS activity. It looks like outlook is gobbling up battery. I will try deleting and reinstalling it. Also will try safe mode

I too have the same phone and the same issues. I bought this because of the advertised high battery life. It used to go three days between charges, now (after updating to lollipop) I'm lucky if it lasts a day without charging. This is unacceptable. I took it to my local Verizon store to seek help in troubleshooting. Their response was that it is a software problem and there was nothing they could do - blame Android.

I see this as being similar to getting sick after eating at a restaurant - you don't contact the farmer that grew the food , you contact the restaurant that sold you (and prepared it). Verizon needs to step up and fix this issue!

Phone was put in safe mode. Battery usage per the phone is Email=30%, Android OS=15%, cell standby=15%, Android system=10%, mdnsd=2%, phone=1%. This is for what it's worth and in my estimation nothing. If you look at your own community forums, other phones have had similar problems. It is not an app, it is the Lollipop OS. Just logically it can not be an app as the same apps were running on 4.1.1 and as soon as you "upgrade" to Lollipop 5.1.1 battery life goes to [removal required by the Verizon Wireless Terms of Service] !! Do you even test this software before you push it out???? Especially since you have had other phones from other Mfg's with the problem for over a year!!! It is interesting to note that you did not push out Lollipop until Marshmellow was released.

I work in the electronics industry and if I pushed out an OS upgrade as bad as this they would have my hide and hold my company responsible. Maybe it is time we hold Verizon responsible, Blaming Apps is just a smoke screen because the only thing that changed on my phone was the Android OS. Bottom line is that Verizon pushed out an "upgrade" to the OS that has caused problems, own up to it and fix it!

Blaming on it on Android is ridiculous as that tells me they did no testing and to push out an OS upgrade that has the same know problem with other manufacturer's phones is negligent. What bothers me most is Verizon's attitude about apps. If I have the same apps running before the upgrade as after and the battery life is trashed, it tells me it is not the Apps but the OS upgrade. Why they do not just own up to the problem is beyond me, unless they just do not care about their customer's that are paying their salary.

Oh no! We certainly are saddened to hear that your battery life has decreased since a software update. That’s never something that we want to see happen. I know that I rely on my phone all the time & don’t want to have to be attached to a charging cord all day. Let’s roll up our sleeves to get this resolved for you. Do you have the Kyocera Brigadier phone as well? If not, what make & model phone to you have? After the software update was done, did the battery life start to drain faster that same day as the software update? Or did it start to happen a few days or week after the software update? After the software update, did you by chance download any new apps to your phone? Any sort of physical or liquid damage to the phone at all? (We just have to ask this question to all of our customers.) I look forward to working with you!

I do have a Kyocera Brigadier. The battery life became an issue immediately after downloading lollipop. I did not add any apps after the OS upgrade. There has been no damage/ drops/water etc. to the phone.

In an attempt to save battery life, I closed most apps and used eco mode. It only marginally helped. In standby sleep mode it continued to drain the battery. I was barely able to go an entire day on one charge - even with very little use.

My primary uses are: phone, checking email, messaging, limited internet ( almost all via wifi). I don't download music, video, games, or other high data apps by phone. As a last resort, I backed up my data and did a factory reset last evening. Today, Battery life seems somewhat improved. I will continue to monitor as the day progresses.

In 4 hours from a full charge, battery is down to 90% in standby eco mode connected to wifi. No phone use, no messages, checked email once, opened a couple of resident apps. This is a lot better than it was, but it was a PITA to get to this point.

My husband has the same issues going on....Verizon keeps claiming there is nothing they can do...offered a $5.00 credit which is absolutely ridiculous. We have at least 15 hours into phone calls with them and been to 3 stores with no help at all. I agree-step up and fix it or replace it at YOUR cost not ours.

Verizon Wireless Customer Support has not responded to that other thread and based on the replies in this thread does not appear to have even read it.

Problem is the email app. Once you remove all your email accounts from that app and use another email app battery use is better than before lollipop.

I contacted Kyocera as well but haven't heard anything in a couple of weeks.

After reading tomnj's post, I deleted my stand alone email program and reloaded it through GMAIL. Aside from inadvertently deleting a bunch of email from the server (thought I was just deleting from the phone)and having to deal with a different process for sending and receiving - it seems to have restored previous battery life.

It still does not relieve Verizon from testing the OS for compatibility issues prior to pushing it out the door. At a MINIMUM, Verizon should warn customers of the new OS shortcomings and be prepared to respond to the technical problems associated with it. Most upgrades are designed to improve performance, not degrade it. Other than the bland statements of "There is nothing more important to us than your happiness" they need to provide solutions rather than platitudes.

Have Samsung Galaxy s6 edge and also have the same critical battery drain issue after most recent update. Device usage rendered very limited if not practically unusable. No app changes or usage changes just the update now battery drains so fast it makes phone practically unusable.

Saw some comments on email app and factory reset which I will try.

I have been reading all of the posts on this subject and rather than explaining my issues I can just say that I have been through every one of these responses. Hurry up Verizon and fix this NOW.

I just got the option to update my Kyocera Brigadier yesterday to lollipop. It was glitchy, kept freezing, and the battery drained fast. It looks like "NFC" is using all of my battery, even though I have NFC off. SO I decided to turn off and restart the phone. After that, my micro SD card is no longer recognized. I take it out and my PC does not recognize it either. I attempted to reformat the SD card and it is not able to. Now I have given up on saving anything and have tried a full factory reset. Waiting to see how that goes, but I am not pleased at all with the "upgrade".

Ok, doing a factory reset seemed to fix the problems. The thing that it did not fix was my micro SD card. The SD card was working fine after the update, but then I had to turn off and restart the phone when I was experiencing freezing. After restarting the phone the SD card was not recognized, I was unable to format it, my PC does not recognize it, and I have lost everything that I had on it. There does not seem to be anything that can be done about that. I put in a new Micro Sd card and it works fine now.

We are happy to know the reset worked but saddened about the SD card issue. You are correct in reference to an erased SD card unless you have the content backed up to the cloud or on a PC somewhere. Did you happen to back it up?
