I thought that once you renewed a plan, Verizon would renege on the original agreement of unlimited data. If I purchase an unlocked phone elsewhere, I would think the data plan would remain in place. Does anyone know?
Hi fmondragon!I understand your importance of retaining unlimited data and I’m here to help! Yes you can purchase a compatible VZW device from a 3rd party and activate it. I am confident this information is helpful, please let me know if you have any additional concerns.

May I assume, then, that my unlimited data plan would remain in effect?
It has been clear for 5 years and is still true, you cannot use a 2 year contract to get a new phone.
You can buy a compatible phone anywhere you like and use it on your plan. And as of your last bill, you are allowed to use the Device payment plan to divide the retail cost over 24 months to buy a phone through Verizon.
THere are a few devices that are universal and can be purchased through the manufacturer. Just bought the Nexus 6p for my son. Awesome phone.
Thanks, mama23dogs!
