High Data Usage when Tethering

I have notice that lately my data usage has really went up. The usage is going to tethering. But I really don't think I'm using that much.

Last night, I made sure my laptop updates were turn off, all my app updates turned off on my phone. I used my S5 for a mobile hotspot for my laptop. I used 1.2GB is about a hour of surfing the web. (Facebook, Craigslist, Etc) I didn't make any post with pictures or watch any videos.

Does this seem high? I have been using my S5 for tethering my laptop for over a year, but in the last 2 months. My data has went from 2GB to over 7GB a month

Under Settings -> Data Usage...check to see what function/feature/app is consuming the highest amounts of data. There should be an option to create a notification when the data consumption hits a user-defined point.

Do you have Windows 10 or is your system attempting to download Windows 10 in the background? Many have found Microsoft's upgrade system to be buggy and consume data when it's not needed.

The best way to fix this is to clear any reference of Windows 10 from the machine, or to find Public Wi-Fi and to install Windows 10 and all updates immediately.

It is Windows 10, and I'm beginning to think that is the reason that I'm using so much data. I did make sure to turn off any Windows updates while it was tethered to my phone

Okay cool. Does your machine have the November update installed to it at all? Is it to set to Metered mode when tethering in the network control panel?

Also, make sure your computer is set like this: Go to Start > Settings > Security & Updates > Windows Update > Advanced Options > "Choose how Updates are delivered" > Turn off the Update sharing feature, just in case Windows is by chance detecting other machines on the wireless network due to an incorrect ACL (Security policy) applied on Verizon's network.
