Powering off/Locking phone?

Ok after some serious thought I have decided to get the htc droid eris. Sense the eris has a not very good battery and the most I have seen people say they can get is 12-14 hrs of use I figure if I could keep my phone off during school when I dont even use it, it could last as long as i need it to. So now my question is, is there a way to turn off the eris completely, or can you only lock it?

And also if it will only lock, will it conserve battery or will it keep running and drain the battery?

Sorry for my lack of knowledge as this will be my first touch screen/smart phone.

Sure. Hold the end call button down, untill you get a box with the selection that says "Power Off".

And there you go.

Maybe I didnt make since after writing my paragraph.

On the droid eris, when you press the call end button at the home screen, does this only lock the phone, or are you able to actually turn the phone completely off?

I just got my Droid yesterday so I'm new with all this...When I did the power off to shut off my phone off last night, in the middle of the night my phone came on and starting alerting me I had emails.

Why would the phone just go on by itself?

Any help would be appreciated. Should I be putting my phone on silent as well at night?
