Using Droid globally via WiFi?

It's really unfortunate that the Droid cannot be used outside of North America. So I was wondering, what features can be used on the Droid overseas with Wifi enabled? Just the browser or can you make calls and send texts? Maybe via Google Voice?

Also, what other alternatives are there to use the Droid overseas? I know Verizon will give you a loaner phone but that's a lot of trouble.

Just wanted to give this a bump because I might be getting a Droid in the next few days but not being able to use this overseas may be a deal breaker for me.

i'm curious about this too .. I guess you could use skype for sure.

i wish the phone was both CDMA and GSM .. I travel to Germany frequently and it

would be great to just have one phone.

If its a smartphone, then it should, ideally, connect to wifi even if there is no cell network. It should also work without a SIM card. But I'm not sure about this device.

That's what I was thinking. Though it would be a pain to be stuck to a wifi location to make a call. Now about the SIM card I don't think the Droid or any verizon phone comes with it.

Yes, sorry, I forgot. I come from a different world where cell phones have SIM cards. :smileyhappy:

There are several apps in the andriod store that provide wifi calling. I cant remember the names so you will just have to search for them in the communications section.

what apps allow wifi calling on moto droid. havent found any. skype light doesnt work with verizon. downloaded lite tried to call using my skype account and go the verizon voice saying this wasnt a verizon number. any ideas?

I am aware that my Droid will not work as a telephone when I am overseas, e.g., in Italy.

But will the WiFi work, assuming I'm in a location that offers WiFI?

I am going to be in Italy for a week in February, and I'm wondering if I can get my email and/or check the internet via WiFI on the Droid.

Unfortunately on the droid Motorola you can not use skype using wifi only, found this out the hard way. I been doing the research and found out that there is not so far but could be soon a unlocking for the wifi and skype to be use. Now, apple has not problem using wifi and skype alone, but the purpose of me buying this phone was to use it in Asia in wifi networks to call home. I would of never bought the phone if I knew that before, but assured that it would when Verizon bought skype, fooled me. So, I have found a network called FRING. They say it works but I've put in a bunch of questions about it and how it works with the new driod. I have got mix reviews on some difficultly to it works great. Fring is in the market place or go on line and check out there web site, seems to be just as friendly as skype. It really is a shame that Verizon does this and locks out the wifi because now all of my company colloges are now going toward the apple, too bad verizon.

Here is a update, I downloaded fring into my droid and it works great! WIRELESS ONLY! That is the answer for all on here that do Asia and Europe. Remember, its only good as the wireless signal you get. Its Fring in your market place, it downloads the skpe gmail etc into the program. So far so good for me
