If you have Verizon and you become incarcerated are you still responsible for the phone bill even though you cant have the phone turned off?

i had Verizon years ago, and i got put in jail and was unable to pay the phone bill for the 4 months i was in jail, Verizon charged me $800 and kept my phone in service even after they were notified by my parents that i could not call in and have it shut off, i also notified them after i got out that i was incarcerated and i couldn't pay the bill for my phone not being used and now Verizon is ruining my credit years later.

i don't understand why this is possible for them to charge me for this when i know for a fact they terminate your phone for non payment after 3 months.

Jdesormier, we are sad to learn of your experience in being incarcerated. Typically service is still provided to the line, even if it is not being used. The only way to stop billing is to suspend the line or cancel the service for the line before hand.

We do understand that those steps can be hard to accomplish if no one else is authorized on the account. However if we are notified by someone not shown on the account, then no steps can be taken to suspend or cancel the services.
