I have Moto E with Lolipop. Can send text messages, but have not been able to receive a message other than the ones Verizon send me. What do I need to do to receive text messsages?

I have Moto E with Lolipop.  I can send text messages, but have not been able to receive text messages other than the ones Verizon sends me.  What do I need to do to receive text messages?
