I can no longer get any reception in my apartment

I used to get two bars in my apartment depending on where I was standing. Last week, suddenly, it shows two bars, but as soon as I open a call, it drops to one and the call drops. I cannot make or receive calls. I chatted with an online rep who said they checked in my area and can see that I'm in a "bad reception" area and suggested I buy a $250.00 piece of equipment that will boost the signal and run it through my DSL line.

Why would the reception suddenly get worse? I have both a Droid Razr and an iPhone 4. Both have the same issue, so it has to be the signal strength. What can I do other than spend more money on something that used to work?

I also went online to see if others in my area are having the same issue and it seems that no matter the carrier, my area just has terrible reception.

You can try other sources for signal boosters from Wilson amplifiers for instance. You don't have to use the only one Verizon offers. If the signal is low and no other carrier can provide adequate service in your area, you might have to buy an extender.

One of the big issues I see with the extenders is they require an antennae to be placed outside. Since I'm in an apartment, I have no way to penetrate the outer wall and run an antennae. My fear is that even a booster won't work as they need to get at least some signal, but if the signal is too weak then it won't have anything to boost.

The GPS extension module is small and needs to be near a southwest-facing window. There is no external antennae on the Samsung Booster Vzw sells. Most others have either indoor and or outdoor antennae as well.

The way my apartment is laid out, I do not have a south-west facing window. I have a door that opens to the West and a large window/sliding glass door combo that faces the north.

It sounds more and more like I need the Samsung Booster. I just hate to have to spend that much money on this since I used to have signal.

I know it is important to have service in your apartment Capnsplody. How long has this been going on for? Is it only indoors? The network extender is a great solution for indoor service. When you leave the apartment does it get better?

The service has always been spotty. I moved in a year and a half ago and normally I could go from one to three bars depending where I was in the apartment. However, about a week and a half ago I noticed the signal strength getting worse, then last Wednesday it seems like it just died altogether. If I go outside, I get spotty to no service for almost two blocks in any direction.
